Heavy drinking has increased in recent years and has been linked to numerous health-related risks, particularly in women. A number of factor … nd are more impulsive than female light drinkers. Moreover, impulsive responding was exacerbated by alcohol drinking among female heavy drinkers, indicating that women who drink at this level are at increased risk for developing alcohol use disorders and engaging in other risky behaviors, particularly after drinking.

BACKGROUND: Whether an association between alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk exists is an open question. In order to provide a definite quantification of the association between alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk, we conducted a meta-analysis of available data.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We carried out a PubMed search of articles published up to June 2010 and identified 44 case-control and 15 cohort studies, including a total of 34 557 gastric cancer cases. We derived meta-analytic estimates using random-effects models, taking into account correlation between estimates. We carried out…

AIM: This was a single-center, mixed-design, cross-sectional and retrospective study to assess the performance of the 4-item, self-reported CAGE (Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-opener) questionnaire in predicting histology-proven alcohol-related liver graft injury (ARLGI).
METHODS: A total of 316 liver transplant (LT) patients between six months and five years were enrolled. Based on previous research, problem alcohol drinking (PAD) was defined as any score ≥ 1 on the CAGE, while a cut-off of 2 was assumed for alcohol dependence (AD).
RESULTS: Responders were 195, 45 (23.1%) had a CAGE score…

The role of alcohol consumption in the etiology of endometrial cancer has not been clarified. To examine the association between alcohol con … ience flushing after drinking. These results suggest the presence of an inverse association between alcohol drinking and endometrial cancer risk among Japanese women, and that this association is evident among those without flushing. Further investigation of these findings is warranted.

As many as 15% of community-dwelling older persons are heavy drinkers, but their alcoholism is often hidden from their physicians. Depression, loneliness, and lack of social support are the most frequently cited antecedents to drinking for older alcoholics. Clinically, the same amount of alcohol once consumed with impunity may cause clinical symptoms in late life. Physiologic changes in volume of distribution make older patients susceptible to acute alcohol toxicity, with its CNS effects and metabolic disturbances. Liver disease, nutritional deficiencies, and impotence are consequences of chro

OBJECTIVE: To describe how motivated are persons with recent traumatic brain injury (TBI) to change their alcohol drinking habits and what factors affect their motivation.
DESIGN: Survey.
SETTING: Acute inpatient rehabilitation program.
PATIENTS: Subjects were 50 patients with recent TBI during inpatient rehabilitation.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Readiness to Change (RTC) questionnaire, Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), and alcohol use questions.
RESULTS: Subjects were 36 years old; 86% were men. Eighty-four percent fell in the contemplation or action phases. Comparisons with a separ…

In a prospective study intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (less than 10. growth percentile at birth) was used as a predictor to diagnose intrauterine alcohol exposure. An interview about maternal alcohol consumption was performed prenatally--when IUGR was diagnosed by ultrasound--or postnatally. The children were followed up to 18 months of age. In 6/47 children we diagnosed various degrees of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome FAS, with only one patient showing a full blown syndrome at birth. 5 patients could not be identified until the pediatric reexamination at the age of 8-18 months. Recent developments in alcoholism : an official publication of the American Medical Society on Alcoholism, the Research Society on Alcoholism, and the National Council on Alcoholism1990eng
This chapter reviews research pertaining to two basic premises regarding problem drinking: that a conceptual clarification is necessary, one which makes an explicit distinction between drinking behavior and alcohol-related problems or adverse consequences, and that an adequate theory of problem drinking must extend beyond the alcohol-specific theories to a broad matrix of biological, behavioral, psychological, and social variables. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of drinking in nonclinical populations show that levels of alcohol consumption are only moderately related to alcohol-

The predictability of the withdrawal syndrome on the basis of the drinking history immediately prior to detoxification was investigated in 43 patients admitted to an inpatient Alcoholism Service; a pilot study consisted of 17 patients and a subsequent definitive study of 26. After obtaining informed consent, blood alcohol concentrations were measured. Each subject was extensively interviewed to obtain a medical and dietary history and to determine alcohol and drug intake in the past week and months. The levels of intoxication and withdrawal signs/symptoms were assessed on admission and daily f

The paper deals with socio-psychological and socio-cultural problems of drunken driving and of alcohol-consumption in general. It is the intention to make evident how the way to show a certain behavior is imbedded in more comprehensive conditions. The contradictory relations between the role of individual traffic and of alcohol consumption in a society on the one hand and the phenomenon of drunken driving on the other hand are pointed out, as well as the different valuation of social drinking and alcohol dependence. The way of profanation of the drug "alcohol" and the importance of social infl

BACKGROUND: An association between alcohol consumption and injury is clearly established from volume of drinking, heavy episodic drinking (HED), and consumption before injury. Little is known, however, about how their interaction raises risk of injury and what combination of factors carries the highest risk. This study explores which of 11 specified groups of drinkers (a) are at high risk and (b) contribute most to alcohol-attributable injuries.
METHODS: In all, 8,736 patients, of whom 5,077 were injured, admitted to the surgical ward of the emergency department of Lausanne University Hospita

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Restricting alcohol advertising may reduce alcohol consumption and related ill-health. However, advertisements for alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks (NoLos) with brand-matched alcoholic versions are typically exempt from restrictions, which could lead to surrogate marketing (adverts for NoLo beverages also promoting brand-matched alcoholic options). This study measured the impact of advertisements for brand-matched NoLo beverages on product selections in a simulated online supermarket, in the UK.

Although social anxiety and problem drinking commonly co-occur, the relationship between social anxiety and drinking among college students is not well understood. The current study examined the relationship between drinking motives, or reasons for drinking, and social anxiety in 239 volunteers. Contrary to hypotheses, high (n=83), moderate (n=90), and low (n=66) social anxiety groups did not differ in endorsement of coping and conformity drinking motives. Further, social anxiety was negatively related to weekly alcohol use and unrelated to alcohol-related problems. Post hoc hierarchical multi

PURPOSE: Subjective response to alcohol's stimulating and sedating effects is a person-level risk factor for heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder. Longitudinal and laboratory studies have demonstrated that at-risk individuals experience greater stimulation and lower sedation while drinking. While between-person subjective responses inform risk and etiology, in-the-moment assessments during daily-life drinking may elucidate the within-person processes by which stimulation and sedation may lead to heavier drinking. We aimed to characterize these momentary processes by testing momentary stimul

BACKGROUND: Rodent models of high alcohol drinking offer opportunities to better understand factors for alcohol use disorders (AUD) and test potential treatments. Selective breeding was carried out to create 2 unique High Drinking in the Dark (HDID-1, HDID-2) mouse lines that represent models of genetic risk for binge-like drinking. A number of studies have indicated that neuroimmune genes are important for regulation of alcohol drinking. We tested whether compounds shown to reduce drinking in other models also reduce alcohol intake in these unique genetic lines.
METHODS: We report tests of g…
