Transient global amnesia and antiphospholipid antibodies.

The patient, a 55 year-old man, developed an episode of transient global amnesia. He was a smoker and had hypercholesterolemia. He was found to have a positive rapid plasma reagin test and high levels of anticardiolipin antibodies. Other investigations were negative. The presence in this patient of antiphospholipid antibodies suggests a vascular mechanism for transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia: pathogenesis and prognosis.

Fifty-five patients admitted to hospital for 'pure' transient global amnesia (TGA) were studied and followed up for a period ranging from 12 to 67 months. The major pathogenetic theories of TGA (epileptic, thrombotic and migrainous) were investigated through the study of clinical histories and risk factors and the recurrences of neurological disturbances during follow-up. Seventy-one percent of the sample had one or more thrombotic risk factors (TRF), 2 patients had both TRF and a history of migraine, and none ever experienced a seizure. A computerized tomography (CT) scan was performed in 40

Transient global amnesia due to clioquinol.

Twelve cases of confusional state after normal or excessive doses of clioquinol are discussed. They resemble transient global amnesia (TGA) of the classic type, but the episodes last longer (1-3 days), they are often accompanied by a variety of mental disturbances, and the onset and end are less well defined than in the classic type. A combination of SMON and acute encephalopathy due to clioquinol was observed in only one case. Apart from amnesia for the acute episode a permanent retrograde amnesia for a few days up to two months was left behind. The pathophysiology of these episodes is not cl

Computer tomography in transient global amnesia.

16 patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) have been investigated by computer tomography. 3 had a completed stroke associated with the TGA. The findings of computer tomography were normal in 7 patients. Atrophy alone was seen in 2 patients. A single hypodense lesion was found in 6 patients; a bilateral lesion in 1 patient. All 3 patients with amnesic stroke showed a hypodense lesion in the CT.

Transient global amnesia in four brothers.

The case histories are described of four brothers who suffered attacks of transient global amnesia. The coincidence of this disorder in four siblings suggests that the causative factors in transient global amnesia may have a familial basis and that its incidence is more common than generally realised.

Musical performance during transient global amnesia.

An organist had an episode of transient global amnesia during a recital. Despite a severe immediate-memory deficit, he performed complex organ music. This case suggests that the localization of the cerebral deficit in transient global amnesia is distinct from the cerebral centers necessary for performance of instrumental music.

Transient global amnesia--a hippocampal phenomenon?

A case of transient global amnesia of clear vascular aetiology is described. Results of neuropsychological testing carried out during the attack clarify the nature of the memory disorder and suggest that the critical region of ischaemia is the medial temporal area around the hippocampus. Follow-up testing suggests that no lasting memory impairment resulted.

Transient amnesia in a patient with left temporal tumor: symptomatic transient global amnesia or an epileptic amnesia?

BACKGROUND: An isolated prolonged episode of transient amnesia can be a major manifestation of transient global amnesia (TGA) and transient epileptic amnesia (TEA). We report a case of transient amnesia associated with a left temporal tumor and try to elucidate the possible mechanism of the amnesia. CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old right-handed man with the past history of migraine developed a transient declarative amnesia with a permanent memory gap for 5 hours. During the attack, he drove for 100 km flawlessly, but was not aware of his memory deficit. Selective retrograde amnesia during the episo

Transient global amnesia: evidence for extensive, temporally graded retrograde amnesia.

We gave six patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) neuropsychological tests during and after their episodes. During TGA, all patients had severe anterograde amnesia for verbal and nonverbal material and a patchy but temporally graded retrograde amnesia for personal and public events dating back to at least 1960. In addition, they were unusually passive during TGA, had impaired ability to copy a complex figure, and possibly had mild impairment of confrontation naming. All exhibited complete recovery of memory and other cognitive abilities after the episode. There are similarities between

[Syncope, transient ischemic attacks, transient global amnesia and migraine].

Epileptic seizures can manifest with a variety of clinical symptoms. Depending on the dominant symptom, several differential diagnoses have to be considered. Their differentiation can be challenging, especially after the first episode. The review article summarizes the most common differential diagnoses as well as their characteristics compared to epileptic seizures, aiming at providing guidelines for their clinical differentiation. Whenever a clear diagnosis is not possible based on the patient history and clinical signs, diagnostic evaluation with, e. g. an electroencephalogram (EEG) and fin

[Was there a confusion before 1950 between global transient global amnesia and psychogenic amnesia?].

INTRODUCTION: The first descriptions of transient global amnesia (TGA) were made in 1956 and 1958. Considering the large number of TGA reported since these original descriptions, it is not conceivable that TGA arose as a new entity in the mid-20th century. Many authors thus tried to understand why it had not been described by the authors of the late 19th and early 20th century. It was considered that TGA "was immersed in the literature on psychogenic amnesia" (Hodges, 1991) and particularly hysterical amnesia. But, can we consider that confusion between transient global amnesia and psychogenic

Can association between transient global amnesia and migraine tell us something about the pathophysiology of transient global amnesia?

The paper deals with the pathophysiological mechanism involved in classic migraine and in transient global amnesia. It is concluded that a primary neuronal mechanism, possibly the spreading depression of Leao, is the most likely explanation of both the syndromes.
