Fatal food-induced anaphylaxis is rarely reported. In 16 months, we identified seven such cases involving five males and two females, aged 11 to 43 years. All victims were atopic with multiple prior anaphylactic episodes after ingestion of the incriminated food (peanut, four; pecan, one; crab, one; fish, one). A case history is presented of a man who developed angioedema of his head and neck during anaesthesia for his 11th cystoscopy within four years. Thiopentone was always used to induce his general anaesthesia. An intradermal skin test with 1 : 100 dilution of 2-5 per cent thiopentone was positive and subsequent anaesthesia without thiopentone was straightforward.

Anaphylaxis can be caused by several different mechanisms. Novel therapies on the horizon target these numerous pathways, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors, recombinant allergen-specific blocking antibodies, and monoclonals targeting KIT or inhibitory receptors. Strawberry IgE-mediated hypersensitivity is often reported rarely confirmed. Only a few cases are described in medical literature, unlike other fruits of the rosacea family. Strawberry is rich in histamine. It can cause histamine release syndrome, especially when eaten in large quantities. However IgE-mediated hypersensitivity exists. We reported the case of a 9-year-old boy with a history of strawberry and raspberry anaphylaxis.
