Asthma Among Manitoba Workers: Results from the Manitoba Occupational Disease Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: This study characterized the risk of new-onset asthma among workers in Manitoba, Canada. METHODS: Accepted time loss claims from the Workers' Compensation Board of Manitoba from 2006 to 2019, containing workers' occupations and industries, were linked with administrative health data from 1996 to 2020. After restricting the cohort to the first claim per person in an occupation and applying age and coverage exclusions, the cohort comprised 142,588 person-occupation combinations. Asthma cases were identified if workers had at least two medical records for asthma (International Classi

[Evaluation of the sensitivity of the Woo test for the detection of Trypanosoma vivax].

The haematocrit centrifuge technique (HCT), or Woo test, is the technique most commonly used for diagnosis of animal trypanosomosis, but its sensitivity is not well defined. Depending on the authors, the sensitivity of the Murray technique (dark' ground buffy coat method, or DG/BCM) is higher, equal or lower than that of the Woo test for the detection of Trypanosoma vivax. Most authors have compared particular techniques relatively to other techniques, rather than attempting to measure the sensitivity of the tests in relation to a fixed reference. The relative sensitivity of particular tests a

Histopathological and radiographic characterization of the lesions of pododermatitis in sheep: support for the establishment of the foot injuries degree and its prognosis.

Foot diseases in small ruminants cause locomotor disorders, leading to significant economic, productive, and health concerns in sheep and goat farming worldwide. The diagnosis and classification of lesions caused by footpad dermatitis are complex and based only on clinical observations in the field. In this context, this study assessed the histopathological and radiographic characteristics of lesions caused by pododermatitis in sheep to improve and deepen the classification of lesions and optimize diagnosis and prognosis. In this study 1.701 lame sheep were included and were distributed across

Perceptions on anthelmintic use and resistance development in goats under communal production systems.

For decades, farmers relied on anthelmintic drug treatments to control gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections, which has led to the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR). The objective of this study was to investigate the perceptions of communal goat farmers regarding anthelmintic resistance in communal goat flocks. A structured, close-ended questionnaire was used to carry out face-to-face interviews with communal goat farmers (n = 384) across four local municipalities in the uMkhanyakude district. The results showed that elderly farmers were 1.4 times more likely to underdose compar

Scrotal tick damage as a cause of infertility in communal bulls in Moretele, South Africa.

Calving rate in communal cattle influences both food security and socio-economics in rural households. A previous study indicated that scrotal damage caused by ticks could affect the fertility of communal bulls and reduce the annual calving rate. The objectives of the study were to investigate the annual calving rate in communal herds by counting calves during herd visits, perform breeding soundness examinations on bulls and identify adult ticks attached to their genitalia. This prospective longitudinal survey was based on participatory rural appraisal. Calving rates were estimated in cows (n

Sister chromatid exchange analysis in workers exposed to noise and vibration.

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing interest in the combined effects of noise and vibration. In a population of aeronautical workers diagnosed with vibroacoustic disease (VAD), a large incidence of malignancy was detected. These workers were exposed to large pressure amplitude (LPA) (> or = 90 dB SPL) noise, with energy content concentrated within the low frequency (LF) bands (< or = 500 Hz) and whole-body vibration (WBV). To our knowledge, there are no studies conducted in humans or animals that address the issue of the potential genotoxic effects of vibration combined with noise. In the pre

A highly accurate framework for estimating eye muscle area and backfat thickness of pigs in vivo using deep learning.

Eye muscle area (EMA) and backfat thickness (BFT) are key determinants of pig carcass value. While ultrasound imaging allows non-invasive estimation of these traits in live animals, measurement accuracy is often compromised by image noise. Manual segmentation of muscle and fat boundaries is not only labor-intensive but also prone to inter-operator variability. To overcome these limitations, this study developed a deep learning-based framework for automated segmentation of pig ultrasound images to accurately estimate EMA and BFT. We constructed a large-scale dataset comprising 10,088 pig ultras

Calving outcomes after ipsilateral versus contralateral supplementary embryo transfer in repeat-breeder Holstein cows.

Supplementary embryo transfer (ET) following artificial insemination (AI) is used in repeat-breeder cows; however, this dual-embryo approach inherently increases the risk of twin outcomes. This study evaluated whether transferring an embryo to the uterine horn contralateral to the corpus luteum (CL) could be associated with different calving outcomes from ipsilateral transfer. Holstein cows (n = 187; 79 nulliparous and 108 multiparous) received ipsilateral or contralateral ET 7-8 days after AI using frozen-thawed, in vitro-produced embryos. Repeat-breeder cows were clinically defined as cows f

A Nutritional Bioenergetic Model for Farmed Fish: Effects of Food Composition on Growth, Oxygen Consumption and Waste Production.

The study of flow and transformation of energy and nutrients via mathematical modelling provides an in silico tool approach for designing scientific experiments, improving precision in aquaculture production and reducing the need for experimental animals. The proposed nutritional bioenergetics model is based on the dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory, a mechanistic framework to study individual metabolism. The model is an extension of the typical DEB models in that it includes a digestion module where the protein and non-protein food components contribute to assimilation via the concept of a sy

Evaluation of Foreign Metal Material Detection Methods for Hide-on and Hide-off Beef Cattle.

Foreign material contamination remains a leading source of consumer complaints in the meat industry, especially in the beef sector. Metallic foreign objects may enter carcasses during upstream animal handling or during processing, creating both food safety risks and economic losses. This study evaluated the efficacy of three detection technologies - x-ray, traditional metal detection, and ultrasound - for detecting foreign metal materials embedded at varying depths and muscle tissue states. Samples representing prerigor hide-on, prerigor hide-off, and postrigor hide-off muscles were collected

Update on the status of leptospirosis in New Zealand.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that poses public health and ecological threats worldwide. In New Zealand (NZ), incidence of the disease is relatively high compared to other developed countries. The aim of this review was to describe the epidemiological status, ecological risk of leptospirosis and prevention in NZ. Disease notification data for leptospirosis in humans in NZ from 2010 to 2015 were collected from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research database. These data were supported by a literature review of epidemiological studies in human and animal populations. During thi

Development of a safer laboratory vervet monkey model for the study of human African trypanosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: There are three subspecies of Trypanosoma brucei: T. b. gambiense, T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. brucei. The first two are infectious to humans, whilst T. b. brucei is not. Identifying an animal model of T. b. brucei that mimics human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) would enable researchers to study HAT without subjecting themselves to undue risks such as accidental infection. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the sequential clinical, parasitological and haematological changes in vervet monkeys infected with T. b. brucei. METHODS: Three vervet monkeys were infected with a 104 inoculum

Intranasal administration of CNS therapeutics to awake mice.

Intranasal administration is a method of delivering therapeutic agents to the central nervous system (CNS). It is non-invasive and allows large molecules that do not cross the blood-brain barrier access to the CNS. Drugs are directly targeted to the CNS with intranasal delivery, reducing systemic exposure and thus unwanted systemic side effects. Delivery from the nose to the CNS occurs within minutes along both the olfactory and trigeminal neural pathways via an extracellular route and does not require drug to bind to any receptor or axonal transport. Intranasal delivery is a widely publicized

The Value of Live Tissue Training for Combat Casualty Care: A Survey of Canadian Combat Medics With Battlefield Experience in Afghanistan.

INTRODUCTION: The optimum method for training military personnel for combat casualty care is unknown. In particular, there is debate regarding the incremental benefit of live animal tissue training (LTT) over inanimate human patient simulators (HPSs). Although both LTT and HPS are currently used for predeployment training, the efficacy of these models has not been established. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Canadian Armed Forces combat medics, deployed to Afghanistan between 2006 and 2011, were surveyed retrospectively regarding their experience with combat casualty care and predeployment training. [Capnocytophaga canimorsus infections: a possibly fatal complication of bite wounds].

Practising veterinarians and their assistants run the risk of being bitten by their patients, mostly cats and dogs, and many have experienced that bites and bite-wound infections can have unpleasant consequences. In recent years, more insight has been gained into a 'new' bacterial infection of bite wounds that not only has severe local effects but also potentially fatal systemic consequences. The bacterium involved is Capnocytophaga canimorsus. All bite wounds should be treated adequately, but this is especially so when wounds are infected with C. canimorsus. In this article, dog and cat bites

Zoonotic disease risk and prevention practices among biologists and other wildlife workers--results from a national survey, US National Park Service, 2009.

In 2007, a National Park Service (NPS) biologist died from pneumonic plague after unprotected exposure to an infected mountain lion. This incident increased awareness of occupational zoonotic disease transmission and prompted an assessment of employees who handle wildlife. During April-June 2009, we conducted a national online survey of NPS biologists and other wildlife workers to assess in the preceding 12 mo: 1) potential work-related zoonotic disease exposures; 2) protective practices, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE); and 3) barriers and facilitators to PPE use.
