Ankyloglossia superior is an exceedingly rare congenital condition that consists of a connection between the tongue and hard palate. This abnormality is considered part of the ankyloglossia superior syndrome when found with other malformations such as limb deformities, gastrointestinal malformation, and cleft palate. Ankyloglossia superior can also be associated with other known syndromes. We have presented the case of a female infant born with multiple malformations, including partial agenesis of the feet and hands, micrognathia, a lack of expression of the facial muscles, convergent strabism…

Ankyloglossia superior (palatoglossal adhesion) is an extremely rare congenital condition with only 14 previously reported cases. When found in conjunction with other congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palate, gastrointestinal malformations, and limb malformations, this anomaly is considered part of ankyloglossia superior syndrome. We present a case of a newborn female found to have ankyloglossia superior syndrome. Surgical repair is also described. We review the available literature and discuss theories regarding the etiology of ankyloglossia superior syndrome. Clinicians should have a h…

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia, or limited tongue mobility due to a restrictive sublingual frenulum, can complicate breastfeeding. Treatment typically involves a frenotomy, a procedure that cuts the restrictive tissue parallel to the tongue.
RESEARCH AIM: To describe the experiences of breastfeeding mothers with children affected by ankyloglossia, before any treatment for the condition.
METHOD: This was a qualitative descriptive study. Using purposive sampling, 20 participants were recruited. Data were collected through individualized semi-structured interviews. The interviews were recorded and t…

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates national trends in inpatient frenotomy for newborns with ankyloglossia, focusing on the association between demographic, socioeconomic, and regional factors and the likelihood of undergoing the procedure.
METHODS: Data from the 2016 Kid Inpatient Database (KID) were analyzed to identify hospitalized newborns diagnosed with ankyloglossia. Frenotomy procedures were identified using ICD-10 procedure codes. Chi-square tests were used to evaluate unadjusted associations between categorical variables and frenotomy utilization. Variables significant in univariate a…

PURPOSE: To deepen our understanding of the effects of ankyloglossia on articulation, the purpose of this study is to examine consonant production and the perceived accuracy of Mandarin-speaking children with ankyloglossia.
METHOD: Ten tongue-tie (TT) and 10 typically developing (TD) children produced nine Mandarin sibilants that contrast in three places of articulation. Their speech productions were analyzed from six acoustic measurements. To further examine the perceptual consequences, an auditory transcription task (N = 21) was conducted.
RESULTS: The acoustic analyses discovered that the…

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization has issued guidelines suggesting exclusive breastfeeding for at least six months for all infants. However, one of the main factors interfering with successful breastfeeding is ankyloglossia. Frenotomy may help improve breastfeeding, but evidence on the long-term effects on breastfeeding is lacking. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of frenotomy on breastfeeding and identify factors associated with receiving exclusive breastfeeding for six months.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted using retrospec…

Ankyloglossia or "tongue-tie" is a congenital anomaly caused by tight lingual frenulum that abnormally connects the tongue base to the floor of the mouth. Ankyloglossia can results in difficulty during speech and deglutition. This case series presents a novel surgical technique in the management of ankyloglossia in using presuturing technique in which different sets of sutures are given on lingual frenum before severing it. This results in reduced opening of the wound, minimal bleeding, pain and discomfort. Two male patients with severe ankyloglossia had been managed with this technique and af…

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenum. Its prevalence in the newborn population is approximately 4%. Its mode of inheritance has been studied in some articles, but no conclusion has been established. Also, no relevant report has been published in Korea. This study was conducted to elucidate the genetic inheritance of ankyloglossia via pedigree analysis.
METHODS: In this study, 149 patients with no other congenital anomaly who underwent frenuloplasty between March 2001 and March 2010 were studied. Pedigrees were made…

Ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly of the tongue characterized by a short lingual frenum, resulting in restricted movement of the tongue. Its etiology is undefined and there is no gender preference. Few studies are available in the literature and the diagnosis and management of ankyloglossia in infants remains controversial. We report two cases of infants submitted to lingual frenectomy, emphasizing the management of ankyloglossia and its implications in breast-feeding.

Information was available on 293 family members and spouses of seven generations in an Icelandic family with high frequency of cleft of secondary palate and ankyloglossia. The authors have personally investigated 182 individuals in generations IV-VII and have drawn blood from over 100 members for genetic marker studies. The senior author, Dr. Björnsson, has operated on two-thirds of the affected individuals. Twenty-six family members had cleft palate (CP) and, of these, 19 (17 male and two females) had ankyloglossia as well (CP + A). Twenty females and one male had only ankyloglossia (A). All …

Background: Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly characterized by restricted tongue mobility due to a short, thick, or tight lingual frenulum. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes current concepts on etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, functional implications, and management for ankyloglossia in newborns. Results: Ankyloglossia can compromise breastfeeding dynamics, manifesting as suboptimal latch, maternal nipple pain, and inefficient milk transfer, and may influence orofacial function if unrecognized. Because anatomical appearance alone does not reliably predict fu…

OBJECTIVE: Ankyloglossia, known as tongue-tie, is a common congenital malformation that restricts the movement of the tongue. It is seen in 4.8% of newborns and is more prevalent in males compared to females. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of dentists in Turkey regarding ankyloglossia.
METHODS: Our survey was conducted online with dentists in Turkey who examine and treat patients. The data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences V.21 software. Frequency distributions and percentages were examined, and relationships between nominal variables…

The article presents modern data on the structure of the lingual frenulum in newborns and factors associated with restricted tongue mobility besides the length of the mucosal part of the frenulum. The diversity of these factors dictates to limit the indications for frenectomy in newborns to cases with breastfeeding negative events evaluated and documented by a pediatrician. The assessment protocol should include weight gain but also child and mother position, duration, and comfort of the breastfeeding sessions, as well as breast condition in mother. The cases of long-term complications of fren
