PF 1022A, a novel anthelmintically active cyclodepsipeptide, and Bay 44-4400, a semisynthetic derivative of PF 1022A were tested for filaricidal efficacy in Mastomys coucha infected with Litomosoides sigmodontis, Acanthocheilonema viteae and Brugia malayi. The parent compound PF 1022A showed limited anti-filarial efficacy in L. sigmodontis and B. malayi infected animals. Oral doses of 5 x 100 mg/kg on consecutive days caused only a temporary decrease of microfilariaemia levels. By contrast, Bay 44-4400 was highly effective against microfilariae of all three species in single oral, subcutaneous

In a search for new anthelmintic compounds, some 6,7-diaryl-pteridines were synthesized from the corresponding diaminopyrimidines and aromatic aldehydes. Their anthelmintic activity was tested in vitro against Caenorhabditis elegans and Heligmosomoides polygyrus and in vivo against Trichinella spiralis. Structure-activity relationships are discussed.

Sixty feeder pigs with mixed naturally acquired nematode infections were medicated with oxfendazole, a new benzimidazolecarbamate compound, at dose levels of 0, 3, 9, and 18 mg/kg of body weight. The dosage of 3.0 mg/kg administered once in the feed proved as efficacious as larger dosages and the same dosage administered 2 or 3 times in the removal of adult Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum dentatum, and Metastrongylus pudendotectus. Trichuris suis adults were less susceptible. Anthelmintic efficacy was based upon comparative nematode egg counts, appearance of eggs, and recovered nematode burdens

The efficacy of oxibendazole against gastrointestinal parasites of horses was evaluated by the critical test method. Naturally infected ponies of various ages were given single oral doses of 5, 10, or 15 mg-kg of bodyweight. The drug was highly effective against adult large strongylids (Strongylus vulgaris, S edentatus, S equins), adult small strongylids (especially species of the genera Cylicostephanus, Cylicocyclus, Cyaathostomum, and Triodontophorus), and adult and larval stages of the large pinworm, Oxyuris equi. There was no apparent dose-related differences in efficacy. Oxibendazole was

Nematode parasitic infections continue to be a major health problem for humans and animals. Drug resistance to currently available treatment … and hookworm infections in humans. Its unique mechanism of action distinguishes it from traditional anthelmintics, positioning it as a promising candidate for combating resistance to other current drugs. Here, we provide a brief review of the available information on emodepside's pharmacokinetics, safety, and tolerability. We highlight the potential benefits an …

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) is a growing concern for effective parasite control in farmed ruminants globally. Combatting AR will require intensified and integrated research efforts in the development of innovative diagnostic tests to detect helminth infections and AR, sustainable anthelmintic treatment strategies and the development of complementary control approaches such as vaccination and plant-based control. It will also require a better understanding of socio-economic drivers of anthelmintic treatment decisions, in order to support a behavioural shift and develop targeted communication s

The first documented case of macrocyclic lactone resistance in gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes of cattle was seen in the US approximately 10 … s to slow the development of drug resistance is through the simultaneous use of multiple classes of anthelmintics, each of which has a different mode of action. Reduction of the selective pressure on the parasites can be attained through a more targeted approach to drug treatments where the producer's needs are met by selective treatment of different classes of …

Mirazid® is a patented preparation from a plant that had been used in folk medicine since ancient Egyptians (Myrrh). It was registered in Egypt for the treatment of schistosomiasis and fascioliasis. Over 32 independent studies for efficacy of Mirazid had been reviewed and their results analyzed. The majority of these studies reported higher than 90% cure rates, that even higher in mixed than single trematodal infections in humans and in farm animals. Only two groups of investigators reported lower cure rates as they used lower doses and estimated cure rates at a shorter period from treatment t
