Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is a biogenic compound that could be involved in metal detoxification in both the host and endosymbionts of symbiotic corals. Acropora aspera, a common reef-building coral of the Great Barrier Reef, was exposed to zinc doses from 10 to 1000μg/L over 96h, with zinc being a low-toxic trace metal commonly used in the shipping industry. Over time, significantly lower DMSP concentrations relative to the control were found in both the host and symbionts in the highest zinc treatment where zinc uptake by both partners of the symbiosis was the highest. This clearly in

Infectious diseases such as white plague syndrome (WPS) and black band disease (BBD) have caused massive coral loss worldwide. We performed a metaproteomic study on the Abrolhos coral Mussismilia braziliensis to define the types of proteins expressed in healthy corals compared to WPS- and BBD-affected corals. A total of 6363 MS/MS spectra were identified as 361 different proteins. Healthy corals had a set of proteins that may be considered markers of holobiont homoeostasis, including tubulin, histone, Rab family, ribosomal, peridinin-chlorophyll a-binding protein, F0F1-type ATP synthase, alpha

Bioconcentration kinetics of five metals (Ag, Cd, Co, Mn, and Zn) were determined in the scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata (entire symbiotic association vs. cultured symbionts), using radiotracer techniques. Among contrasting element behaviors observed in S. pistillata, the highest efficiency of concentration and retention was observed for Ag in the symbiotic association (CFss reaching 5000 and T b½>1 year). Predominant proportion of this metal was found associated with the skeleton whereas the other metals were mainly present in the coral tissues (including host tissues and symbionts)

Coral mucus-degrading bacteria were isolated by an enrichment culture procedure. The isolates were able to grow as pure cultures on 10% sterilized mucus in seawater, yielding 10(8) CFU/ml. The isolates, mostly Vibrio strains, were classified by classical and molecular methods. When carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus compounds were added separately to the mucus medium, there was no increase in CFUs; however, when they were added together, there was a large increase in cell yield. The indigenous bacterial population of coral mucus increased from 10(3) to 10(8) CFU/ml when incubated at 30 degrees C

Laboratory studies on the ecological physiology of a coral pathogen were carried out to investigate growth potential in terms of environmental factors that may control coral diseases on reefs. The disease chosen for this study, white plague type II, is considered to be one of the major diseases of Caribbean scleractinian corals, affecting a wide range of coral hosts and causing rapid and widespread tissue loss. It is caused by a single pathogen, the bacterium Aurantimonas coralicida. A series of laboratory experiments using a pure culture of the pathogen was carried out to examine the roles of

For millennia, corals have built coral-reef structures upon the remains of past generations of coral skeletons, forming the world's most diverse marine ecosystems. Yet, ocean warming and regional and local disturbances are reducing the capacity of coral reefs to grow and keep pace with sea-level rise. Understanding which environmental and climatic conditions influenced reef growth in the past, when human populations were small, may help us understand how reefs respond to contemporary environmental changes. Using coral cores dating back 11,700 calibrated years before present (yr BP) from 291 si

The coral microbiome is highly complex, and interactions between microbiome members have been proposed as an important component of coral thermotolerance. However, establishing causal links among specific microbiome members remains difficult in corals because these communities are diverse and difficult to manipulate experimentally. We used Aiptasia, an emerging coral model system, to test how algal symbiont identity influences the structure and dynamics of the prokaryotic microbiome during heat stress. We generated clonal Aiptasia lines hosting two well-defined strains of photosynthetic algae

Coral reef ecosystems face increasing threats from microbial diseases, especially those induced by bacterial infections. Conventional diagnostic techniques often require invasive sampling, extended processing time and are limited in their spatial applicability. Spectral reflectance analysis offers a non-invasive means for detecting subtle physiological alterations associated with coral disease; however, its application in characterizing microbiological changes remains largely unexplored. This research aimed to differentiate healthy from diseased coral colonies by analyzing the spectral fingerp

High spatial or temporal variability in community composition makes it challenging for natural resource managers to predict ecosystem trajectories at scales relevant to management. This is commonly the case in nearshore marine environments, where the frequency and intensity of disturbance events vary at the sub-kilometer to meter scale, creating a patchwork of successional stages within a single ecosystem. The successional stage of a community impacts its stability, recovery potential, and trajectory over time in predictable ways. Here we demonstrate the value of successional theory for interp

Climate change is causing shifts in the spatial distribution of species and a reshuffling of the composition of multiple community types. On coral reefs, deep water can act as both refuges and refugia for corals from the combined negative effects of heat and light stress. Phenotypically plastic generalists that can tolerate both low and high light environments could be disproportionately important on future reefs, persisting in refugia and colonizing vacant shallow reefs. We performed a common garden experiment to investigate the effect of light on three different wild-collected genotypes of t

This study aims to elucidate a novel mechanism for elevating the pH within the calicoblastic extracellular calcifying medium (pHECM) of corals and demonstrate the potential contribution of calcifying organisms to CO2 sequestration. Departing from traditional models that attribute the increase in pHECM primarily to H+ expulsion via Ca2+-ATPase, we emphasize the significant role of polyamines. These ubiquitous biogenic amines conveyed by calicoblastic cells through polyamine transporters demonstrate a remarkable affinity for CO2. Their ability to form stable carbamate complexes is pivotal in fac

The ability of reefs to protect coastlines from storm-driven flooding hinges on their capacity to keep pace with sea-level rise. Here, we show how and whether coral restoration could achieve the often-cited goal of reversing the impacts of coral-reef degradation to preserve this essential function. We combined coral-growth measurements and carbonate-budget assessments of reef-accretion potential at Buck Island Reef, U.S. Virgin Islands, with hydrodynamic modeling to quantify future coastal flooding under various coral-restoration, sea-level rise, and storm scenarios. Our results provide guidan

Extreme weather events (EWEs; for example, heatwaves, cold spells, storms, floods and droughts) and non-native species invasions are two major threats to global biodiversity and are increasing in both frequency and consequences. Here we synthesize 443 studies and apply multilevel mixed-effects metaregression analyses to compare the responses of 187 non-native and 1,852 native animal species across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems to different types of EWE. Our results show that marine animals, regardless of whether they are non-native or native, are overall insensitive to EWEs, ex

Standing genetic variation is a major driver of fitness and resilience and therefore of fundamental importance for threatened species such as stony corals. We analyzed RNA-seq data generated from 132 Montipora capitata and 119 Pocillopora acuta coral colonies collected from Kāne'ohe Bay, O'ahu, Hawai'i. Our goals were to determine the extent of colony genetic variation and to study reproductive strategies in these two sympatric species. Surprisingly, we found that 63% of the P. acuta colonies were triploid, with putative independent origins of the different triploid clades. These corals have s

Microbes produce natural products that mediate interactions with each other and with their environments, representing a potential source of antibiotics for human use. The biosynthesis of some antibiotics whose constitutive production otherwise remains low has been shown to be induced by competing microbes. Competition among macroorganism hosts may further influence the metabolic outputs of members of their microbiomes, especially near host surfaces where hosts and microbial symbionts come into close contact. At multiple field sites in Fiji, we collected matched samples of corals and algae that

Soft corals and associated microorganisms are known to produce leads for anticancer drugs. Keeping this in mind, Nephthea sp.; a Red Sea soft coral was investigated for the first time using the OSMAC approach. Two isolates, Streptomyces sp. UR63 and Micrococcus sp. UR67 were identified. Their extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, macrolides, quinones, fatty acids and terpenoids. Further comparison through a set of multivariate data analyses revealed their unique chemical profiles. The extracts displayed inhibitory potencies against HepG-2, Caco-2 and MCF-7 tumor cell lines with IC50 val

This review focuses on a rare group of steroids and triterpenoids that share common properties as regulators of lipid metabolism. This group of compounds is divided by the type of chemical structure, and they represent: aromatic steroids, steroid phosphate esters, highly oxygenated steroids such as steroid endoperoxides and hydroperoxides, α,β-epoxy steroids, and secosteroids. In addition, subgroups of carbon-bridged steroids, neo steroids, miscellaneous steroids, as well as synthetic steroids containing heteroatoms S (epithio steroids), Se (selena steroids), Te (tellura steroids), and At (ast

The review is devoted to the chemical diversity of steroids produced by soft corals and their determined and potential activities. There are about 200 steroids that belong to different types of steroids such as secosteroids, spirosteroids, epoxy- and peroxy-steroids, steroid glycosides, halogenated steroids, polyoxygenated steroids and steroids containing sulfur or nitrogen heteroatoms. Of greatest interest is the pharmacological activity of these steroids. More than 40 steroids exhibit antitumor and related activity with a confidence level of over 90 percent. A group of 32 steroids shows anti

Eight new compounds, sinulolides A-H (1-8), along with two known compounds, α-methoxy-2,3-dimethyl-butenolide (9) and sinularone D (10), were isolated from the soft coral Sinularia sp. The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations were determined on the basis of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data analysis. Compounds 5 and 10 exhibited moderate effects for the inhibition of NF-κB activation.

Small-scale fisheries (SSF) in tropical seascapes (mosaics of interconnected mangroves, seagrasses and corals) are crucial for food and income. However, management is directed mostly to corals and mangroves. This research analyzes the importance of seagrasses compared to adjacent ecosystems in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Using fish landings; the study investigated: location of fishing effort, fish production (biomass and species), and monetary benefits (aggregated value and per capita income). Seagrasses were the most visited grounds providing highest community benefits. Per capita benefit
