Marine Microbial-Derived Antibiotics and Biosurfactants as Potential New Agents against Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the leading nosocomial infections in the world and have led to the extensive study of various strategies to prevent infection. However, despite an abundance of anti-infection materials having been studied over the last forty-five years, only a few types have come into clinical use, providing an insignificant reduction in CAUTIs. In recent decades, marine resources have emerged as an unexplored area of opportunity offering huge potential in discovering novel bioactive materials to combat human diseases. Some of these materials, suc

Is There Adequate Evidence for Intracellular Bacteria Being a Significant Cause of rUTIs and Thereby Justifying Targeted Treatments Such as Bladder Fulguration or Intravesical Therapies? ICI-RS 2025.

AIMS: Recurrent urinary tract infections are a common medical problem and current guidelines recommend both antibiotic and non-antibiotic preventative treatments. However, for a significant proportion of patients with this condition these second-line treatments are not effective. As a result, there has been recent focus on more targeted treatment such as intravesical instillations and bladder fulguration procedures. We aim to report discussions regarding these targeted treatments for recurrent urinary tract infections that took place at the International Consultation on Incontinence - Research

[Research Progress on Artifcial Conduits for Urological Application with Antibacterial Function].

Artificial conduits, including ureteral stents and catheters, are used widely as drainage tools in the urinary system. However, various bacteria in the urine and long duration of insertion can arouse the biofilm formation on the pipeline surface, which calls for effective antibacterial strategy. In this article, the mechanism of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) is explained from the perspective of etiology. Then, the biofilm formation conditions and the features of urine are analyzed, the antibacterial agents and approaches suitable for ureteral stents and catheters are int

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections: new aspects of novel urinary catheters.

Nosocomial urinary tract infection is the most common infection acquired both in hospitals and nursing homes and is usually associated with catheterisation. These catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) have been reported to increase mortality and have a considerable economic impact. To date, the sole effective preventative strategy is the use of a closed drainage system and removal of the catheter as soon as possible. The underlying cause of CAUTI is the formation of a pathogenic biofilm on the surface of the indwelling urinary catheter. Currently, researchers seek to alter the

Urinary alkalisation for symptomatic uncomplicated urinary tract infection in women.

BACKGROUND: Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common bacterial infection in women, characterised by dysuria and urinary frequency. Urinary alkalisers are widely used in some countries for the symptomatic treatment of uncomplicated UTI, and they are recommended in some national formularies. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence to support their use for UTI and some healthcare guidelines advise against their use. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to look at the benefits and harms of the use of urinary alkalisers for the treatment of uncomplicated UTIs in adult women. SEARCH M

Nitrofurantoin-Induced Granulomatous Interstitial Pneumonia.

Nitrofurantoin-induced lung toxicity is relatively common, but rare histologic patterns sometimes occur that may make diagnosis difficult. We present the case of a 69-year-old woman taking prophylactic nitrofurantoin for urinary tract infections, who developed granulomatous interstitial pneumonia. She improved with cessation of nitrofurantoin, without other therapy. To our knowledge, this is the fourth reported case of granulomatous interstitial pneumonia associated with nitrofurantoin, and the first to show complete resolution with cessation of the drug alone, without steroids. It is importan

Urinary tract infections. 2. Therapeutic approach.

Acute urethral syndrome is effectively treated with a standard course of an appropriate oral antibiotic. Cystitis can be treated similarly but, because it is regarded as benign in normal hosts, may be better treated symptomatically. Acute pyelonephritis requires a parenteral antibiotic because of its frequent association with bacteremia. In chronic pyelonephritis, an oral antibiotic is chosen for long-term use on the basis of its ability to penetrate damaged renal tissue. When urinary tract infection recurs, reinfection must be differentiated from relapse. Reinfection usually requires long-ter

Review of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections and In Vitro Urinary Tract Models.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are one of the most common nosocomial infections and can lead to numerous medical complications from the mild catheter encrustation and bladder stones to the severe septicaemia, endotoxic shock, and pyelonephritis. Catheters are one of the most commonly used medical devices in the world and can be characterised as either indwelling (ID) or intermittent catheters (IC). The primary challenges in the use of IDs are biofilm formation and encrustation. ICs are increasingly seen as a solution to the complications caused by IDs as ICs pose no risk

An update on prevention and treatment of catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Catheter-related urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most important nosocomial infections. This review summarizes the latest advances in the field of catheter care and the management of catheter-associated UTIs. RECENT FINDINGS: The most efficient methods to prevent catheter-associated UTIs are to avoid unnecessary catheterizations and to remove catheters as soon as possible. The use of different reminder systems and implementation of infection control programs can effectively decrease catheter-associated UTIs, although their introduction can be challenging. There

[Urinary tract infection and overactive bladder. Is there an association?].

A discussion of key research findings dedicated to the relationship between urinary tract infection (UTI) and overactive bladder (OAB) is presented in the article. The results of the publications support the concept that UTI may be an underappreciated contributor to the development of OAB in some patients and vice versa. This information raises a number of questions regarding the treatment and diagnosis of OAB and UTI. The main question is the potential use of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other drugs in the treatment of patients with OAB, as well as the rationale for the use of th

Urinary Tract Infections Caused by Uropathogenic Escherichia coli: Mechanisms of Infection and Treatment Options.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections that represent a severe public health problem. They are often caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumonia), Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis), Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), and Staphylococcus saprophyticus (S. saprophyticus). Among these, uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) are the most common causative agent in both uncomplicated and complicated UTIs. The adaptive evolution of UPEC has been observed in several ways, including changes in colonization, attachment, invasion, and intracellular replication

Urinary tract infections. How to manage nursing home patients with or without chronic catheterization.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)--including cystitis, pyelonephritis, and catheter-associated infections--are among the most common nursing home-acquired infections. Asymptomatic bacteriuria can be identified in 20 to 50% of nursing home residents who do not have bladder catheters and in 100% of those who do. Diagnostic tests for nursing home patients with suspected UTI include urinalysis, urine culture, and sensitivity testing. Treatment of cystitis can usually be managed in the nursing home with oral antibiotics. Initial therapy with a parenteral agent is often recommended in nursing home-acq
