Differences in anxiety sensitivity factors between anxiety and depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to the tendency to fear physical sensations associated with anxiety due to concerns about potential physical, social, or cognitive consequences. Many previous studies were limited by the use of the anxiety sensitivity index (ASI) or the ASI-revised (ASI-R), which are both measurements with unitary or unstable structures. No recent study that has utilized the ASI-3 examined the relations between AS dimensions and depression. Thus, we examined multiple relationships between AS and anxiety disorders and depression using the ASI-3. METHODS: The total sa…

Acupuncture for anxiety and anxiety disorders--a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of anxiety and anxiety disorders by systematic review of the relevant research. METHODS: Searches of the major biomedical databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, ClNAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library) were conducted between February and July 2004. Specialist complementary medicine databases were also searched and efforts made to identify unpublished research. No language restrictions were imposed and translations were obtained where necessary. [Anxiety and Generalized Anxiety Disorder in Elite Athletes].

Physical activity is recommended as a strategy for promoting mental health, and it can even be integrated into treatment plans for psychiatric disorders affecting the general population. However, elite athletes are a subpopulation with protective and risk factors inherent to high-level competition and are not shielded from psychiatric symptoms and conditions. The mental health of elite athletes has been the subject of increasing attention, driven in part by the initiatives of the International Olympic Committee and the growing importance of sports psychiatry. This article is a narrative review

What are the odds of anxiety disorders running in families? A family study of anxiety disorders in mothers, fathers, and siblings of children with anxiety disorders.

This family study investigated (1) the prevalence of anxiety disorders (ADs) in parents and siblings of children (n = 144) aged 8-18 years with ADs compared to control children (n = 49), and (2) the specificity of relationships between child-mother, child-father, and child-sibling ADs. Clinical interviews were used to assess current DSM-IV-TR ADs in children and siblings, and lifetime and current ADs in parents. Results showed that children with ADs were two to three times more likely to have at least one parent with current and lifetime ADs than the control children (odds ratio (OR) = 2.04 an…

Do Youth with Separation Anxiety Disorder Differ in Anxiety Sensitivity From Youth with Other Anxiety Disorders?

Studies on the relationship between separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in childhood and panic disorder (PD) in adolescence and adulthood have yielded results which suggest a common underlying vulnerability for both disorders. In this study, we examined whether one such possible vulnerability-anxiety sensitivity-differed for youth diagnosed with SAD versus other anxiety disorders. Anxiety sensitivity was assessed using the Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI) in 315 clinic-referred youth (ages 6-17, 113 girls). 145 children (46%) were diagnosed with one or more primary anxiety disorder, in…

[Change in the diagnosis and therapy of anxiety disorders. 1: Phenomenology of anxiety and new approaches in the classification of anxiety disorders].

The pathological states anxiety neurosis and phobias, diagnostically classified under the neuroses, are, influenced by a recent American diagnostic classification, now designated anxiety disorders in clinical psychiatry. With this approach, which is more phenomenological than etiological in orientation, new diagnostic possibilities--among other things--have arisen. In the first place, an accurate differentiation of periodic and chronic states of anxiety can be made, while the clinical phenomena can be considered from various aspects, in order to evaluate simultaneously 1. the current clinical …

Social anxiety disorder.

Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and disabling disorder that may occur in different cultural settings, it is under-diagnosed by clinicians. In order to facilitate accurate diagnosis, the clinical features and differential diagnosis of SAD are described, together with useful assessment instruments for clinicians. Aetiological evidence suggests that the causal pathways for SAD include genetic, neurobiological, temperamental and cognitive factors. A range of effective treatments for SAD are available: current findings suggest that the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSR

Generalized anxiety disorder.

The diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was first introduced in 1980 with the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III) of the American Psychiatric Association. Prior to this, the diagnosis of "anxiety neurosis" was given to patients with symptoms similar to those now incorporated within the GAD category. Originally, GAD was created as a residual category within the anxiety disorders as a rubric for patients with serious anxiety problems but without panic attacks. Panic disorder therefore received far more research attention, …

Generalized anxiety disorder.

Patients with generalized anxiety disorder experience worry or anxiety and a number of physical and psychologic symptoms. The disorder is frequently difficult to diagnose because of the variety of presentations and the common occurrence of comorbid medical or psychiatric conditions. The lifetime prevalence is approximately 4 to 6 percent in the general population and is more common in women than in men. It is often chronic, and patients with this disorder are more likely to be seen by family physicians than by psychiatrists. Treatment consists of pharmacotherapy and various forms of psychother

Dependent personality, separation anxiety disorder and other anxiety disorders in OCD.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether dependent personality and/or general personality dimensions might explain the strong relationships between separation anxiety disorder (Sep-AD) and three other anxiety disorders (agoraphobia, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder) in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: Using data from 509 adult participants collected during the OCD Collaborative Genetic Study, we used logistic regression models to evaluate the relationships between Sep-AD, dependent personality score, general personality dimension…

Differentiating generalized anxiety disorder from anxiety disorder not otherwise specified.

The diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) have elicited numerous criticisms and suggestions for revision. Several resea … als diagnosed with AnxNOS (n = 146) were compared with those diagnosed with GAD (n = 146) and other anxiety disorders (n = 146) on self-report measures, clinician ratings, and rates of comorbidity.
