Peters anomaly (PA) and primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) are genetically and phenotypically distinct conditions. Mutations in cytochrome P4501B1 (CYP1B1) are the most common cause of PCG in Saudi Arabia. Recent evidence suggests that there may be common genetic factors to these conditions. The association between articular chondrocalcinosis and osteoarthritis was sought by studying 92 patients over the age of 60. Anteroposterior and lateral X-ray projections of knees, hands and wrists were studied for the presence of chondrocalcinosis and osteoarthritis. Of the 92 patients (60 males, 32 females), six had chondrocalcinosis of the knees; two of them also had it in the wrist. All children were on treatment for vitiligo with a psoralen oil and burns were sustained from unsupervised sun exposure while playing outdoors. A comprehensive screening program was initiated in Saudi Arabia in 1982 to determine the frequency of the sickle cell (Hb S) gene in the different regions of Saudi Arabia. We report our observations in 427 stroke patients (305 Saudis, 122 non-Saudis with an age range of 14 months to 85 years) seen in a tertiary hospital in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia over an 8-year period. Of these patients, 115 (27%) were between 18 and 45 years old, and constituted the "young stroke patients" for this study. The hospital frequency for the young was 5/10,000 inpatients. Hemoglobinopathies are a major public health problem in Saudi Arabia. We studied the effect of splenectomy in 16 Saudi Arabian children with compound hemoglobinopathies. Seven patients no longer require regular blood transfusions, and transfusion requirements were decreased by 30 to 60% in the other eight patients. Infants presenting with hypernatraemic dehydration were studied prospectively in order to describe its incidence and the predisposing factors. Five hundred and twenty children with gastroenteritis were admitted to the Paediatric Unit of Hail General Hospital over a 1-year period from 1 June 1985 to 1 June 1986. Heat stroke is hardly seen in Malaysia. However, it occurs commonly in Saudi Arabia during the Haj season. Many Malaysian pilgrims are affected every year and some die. Having faced this environmental hazard for eight years, the Malaysian Medical Mission, sent each year to look after our pilgrims, modified its treatment strategy in 1988 and successfully decreased the overall morbidity and mortality of affected patients without the use of sophisticated equipment. During a period of one year, 117 episodes of nosocomial bacteraemia were documented at King Khalid University Hospital, an incidence of 5 per 1000 admissions. Sixty-two percent were gram-negative organisms with Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Serratia spp. and Pseudomonas spp. being the most frequent. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common gram-positive organism isolated. The source of infection was identified in 75% of patients. Intravenous lines accounted for a high proportion of cases (22%). Most deaths occurred in infants and patients with serious underlying disease.

We studied 50 patients in Saudi Arabia with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). There was a high positive family history of epilepsy (48.7%) and a high prevalence (10.7%) of other forms of epilepsy. JME was unrecognized at the time of referral for all patients. Age at onset varied from 6 to 28 years with an average of 15.5 years.
