The long arms of anencephaly: A refutation.

A paper published in 1925 reported that human fetuses with anencephaly have arms that are longer than normal. This finding was accepted as true through the early 1990s. An analysis of body dimensions done in 1996 and enlarged and updated here shows that the arms of human fetuses with anencephaly are appropriate for gestational age and normal in proportion to their leg lengths. A subtle difference in measurement technique was found to explain the discordant findings.

Treating nerves: a call to arms.

The process of proving that new treatments for peripheral nerve diseases work has often been slow and inefficient. The lack of adequate evidence for some existing treatments has been highlighted by Cochrane systematic reviews. This article uses four different conditions to illustrate the need for more research. Both corticosteroid injections and surgical decompression of the median nerve are efficacious in carpal tunnel syndrome, but whether corticosteroid injections avoid the need for operation needs to be discovered. Corticosteroids are efficacious for Bell's palsy, but the role of antiviral

The treatment of snoring in the armed forces.

Snoring is a common problem, which may have widespread medical and social implications. This is particularly true in the setting of the armed forces where snoring may have significant effects in terms of personal performance, social interaction and security. This paper discusses the general management of snoring in the military environment and in particular the clinical effectiveness of one surgical procedure, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. In this study, the procedure proves to be an effective surgical option in the management of snoring.

Comparison of accuracy in C1-C2 pedicle screw placement: O-arm, 3D guides, and C-arm fluoroscopy.

To evaluate the accuracy and safety of C1-C2 pedicle screw placement using O-arm navigation, individualized 3D-printed guides, and C-arm fluoroscopy. Clinical data of 47 patients who underwent C1-C2 spinal fixation surgery at our institution between January 2015 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The cohort included 28 males and 19 females, aged 15-59 years (mean age: 46.23 ± 9.97 years). Patients were categorized into three groups based on the screw placement technique: navigation group (11 cases; O-arm S8 navigation system), guide group (15 cases; individualized 3D-printed guid…

Arm impairment and walking speed explain real-life activity of the affected arm and leg after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: To determine to what extent accelerometer-based arm, leg and trunk activity is associated with sensorimotor impairments, walking capacity and other factors in subacute stroke. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PATIENTS: Twenty-six individuals with stroke (mean age 55.4 years, severe to mild motor impairment). METHODS: Data on daytime activity were collected over a period of 4 days from accelerometers placed on the wrists, ankles and trunk. A forward stepwise linear regression was used to determine associations between free-living activity, clinical and demographic variables. RESULT…

Exposure from the large C-arm versus the mini C-arm using hand/wrist and elbow phantoms.

PURPOSE: This study tests the conventional wisdom that using fluoroscopy under identical geometrical conditions results in less radiation when using the mini C-arm relative to the large C-arm. METHODS: We evaluated the radiation dose for both direct exposure and scatter 2.54 cm outside the intensifier. We used 3 mini and 3 large C-arms in a vertical orientation with the image intensifier below the specimen and the source above. We used 2 specimens: a cadaver hand/wrist and a cadaver elbow. Specimens were tested both directly on the intensifier and on a hand table placed on the intensifier. R…

Arm Lifting With Subdermal Axillar Brachioplasty.

BACKGROUND: Traditional brachioplasty for moderate to severe arm laxity typically requires longitudinal incisions extending from the axilla to the elbow, often resulting in visible scarring and patient dissatisfaction. To address this limitation, we developed subdermal axillar brachioplasty (SAB), a minimally invasive technique combining liposuction, gas-assisted subdermal radiofrequency, and limited axillary skin excision. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted including 67 female patients who underwent SAB between January 2023 and November 2025. Patients with Igle…

Bayesian inference in arm posture perception.

To configure our limbs in space, the brain must compute their position based on sensory information provided by mechanoreceptors in the skin, muscles, and joints. Because this information is corrupted by noise, the brain is thought to process it probabilistically and integrate it with prior belief about arm posture, following Bayes' rule. Here, we combined computational modeling with behavioral experimentation to test this hypothesis. The model conceives the perception of arm posture as the combination of a probabilistic kinematic chain composed by the shoulder, elbow, and wrist angles, compro…

Humeral fractures sustained during arm wrestling.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to present our experience of treating humerus fracture sustained during arm wrestling. METHODS: Data of patients treated in our clinic with the diagnosis of humeral shaft fracture due to arm wrestling between 2000 and 2020 was retrospectively reviewed. Data collected included age, sex, dominant arm, history of professional or experienced participation, type and laterality of fracture, presence of radial nerve palsy, other surgical complications, management (surgical or conservative), duration of union defined as the time from injury until callus was evident …
