Articulation is driven by various combinations of movements of the lip, tongue, soft palate, pharynx and larynx, where the tongue plays an especially important role. In patients with cerebrovascular disorder, lingual motor function is often affected, causing dysarthria. We aimed to evaluate the effect of visual biofeedback of posterior tongue movement on articulation rehabilitation in dysarthria patients with cerebrovascular disorder. Fifteen dysarthria patients (10 men and 5 women; mean age, 70.7 ± 10.3 years) agreed to participate in this study. A device for measuring the movement of the pos

BACKGROUND: Children with phonological problems are a significant proportion of many therapists' caseloads. However, little is known about current clinical practice with these children or whether research on the effects of therapy have influenced this practice.
AIMS: To investigate the methods of assessment and remediation used by therapists working in the UK.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A questionnaire was sent to therapists working with pre- and primary school-aged children.
OUTCOMES & RESULTS: Ninety-eight clinicians of varying experience responded. Most used the South Tyneside Assessment of P

Vowel misarticulations have received very little attention in our literature. The author suggests that although vowel errors occur less frequently than consonant errors, their presence may indicate increased severity of disorder and should not be ignored. As vowel misarticulations have received relatively scant attention, their assessment and remediation have not been addressed. Procedures for the analysis and interpretation of vowel errors are described. A case study is presented to illustrate approaches to vowel assessment and remediation. Clinician attention to this aspect of phonological d

School-aged children who stutter often present concomitant impairments in articulation and language that can complicate treatment. In this article, a framework is offered for designing intervention programs for such children. It is stressed that clinicians must first identify clinical priorities by determining the severity of the impairments, their impact on daily activities, others' reactions to the impairments, and the likelihood of unassisted recovery. Several potential treatment models are presented, as are general treatment principles and specific treatment strategies for three profiles o

BACKGROUND: Recent research has shown that phonological awareness therapy can improve speech production in children with expressive phonological disorders. This approach may be appealing to clinicians as the therapy may also benefit the children's general phonological abilities and lead to gains in their literacy skills.
AIMS: To examine the effectiveness of phonological awareness therapy under conditions more similar to those prevailing in many speech and language therapy clinics. Children were treated in small groups and less intensive therapy was offered than in previous studies.

The effectiveness of a 6-week summer residential speech program was evaluated for 13 children with cleft lip and palate or cleft palate only. All children received a pretherapy evaluation followed by 4 hours of articulation therapy daily, for 26 days. Speech status was assessed immediately following the intensive therapy program and again on a 9-month follow-up. The findings of this study indicated that while the subjects significantly improved their articulation performance during the program, their progress was much slower than expected. There was no significant difference between the articu

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine whether children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate (NSCLP) are more likely to be diagnosed with psychiatric disorders and whether cleft-related factors are related to psychopathology.
METHOD: Twenty children from 6 to 16 years of age with NSCLP, attending the Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty between January and October 2010, were included as the case group. Forty healthy children who were matched on age and sex with the case group served as controls. Children were assessed by psychiatri

Individuals with neuromuscular pathologies are often prescribed an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) to improve their gait mechanics by decreasing pathological movements of the ankle and lower limb. AFOs can resist or assist excessive or absent muscular forces that lead to tripping, instability, and slow inefficient gait. However, selecting the appropriate AFO with mechanical characteristics, which limit pathological ankle motion in certain phases of the gait cycle while facilitating effective ankle movement during other phases, requires careful clinical decision-making. The aim of this study is to pr

Increasingly, electropalatography (EPG) is being used in speech pathology research to identify and describe speech disorders of neurological origin. However, limited data currently exists that describes normal articulatory segment timing and the degree of variability exhibited by normal speakers when assessed with EPG. Therefore, the purpose of the current investigation was to use the Reading EPG3 system to quantify segmental timing values and examine articulatory timing variability for three English consonants. Ten normal subjects repeated ten repetitions of CV words containing the target con

In order to investigate the articulatory processes of the hasty and mumbled speech in cluttering, the kinematic variability was analysed by means of electromagnetic midsagittal articulography. In contrast to persons with stuttering, those with cluttering improve their intelligibility by concentrating on their speech task. Variability has always been an important criterion in comparable studies of stuttering and is discussed in terms of the stability of the speech motor system. The aim of the current study was to analyse the spatial and temporal variability in the speech of three persons with c

This study surveyed the development and functioning of a group of 16 children with congenital hypothyroidism who had been followed closely since treatment was instituted at an average age of 15.6 days. This group of early-treated young children had no deficits in cognitive or adaptive functioning. Some isolated motor deficits were found, although results of the Finger-tapping and Marching subtests of the Reitan-Indiana battery did not replicate the New England Congenital Hypothyroid Collaborative (1985) finding of impaired performance. Speech deficits were documented in some. Congenitally hypo

Language and literacy skills were assessed in 83 8 1/2-year olds whose language development had been impaired at 4 years of age. Provided that language problems had resolved by age 5 1/2 years, literacy development was normal, but many of the children who still had verbal deficits at 5 1/2 years of age did have reading difficulties and persisting oral language impairments later on. In these children, reading comprehension tended to be poor relative to reading accuracy. Syntactic competence in the preschool period accounted for a substantial proportion of the variance in literacy attainments, a

Parkinson's disease is not only a disorder affecting locomotion, but often also causes speech problems. Functional impairment of articulation, phonation, prosody and also respiration may occur. Speech disorder is frequent in Parkinson's disease and often has an impact on the quality of life. Speech therapy is by no means offered as a matter of course to these patients. This article outlines the different approaches of speech therapy regarding respiration, loudness, articulation, prosody, and intonation. Speech therapy seems to be useful in patients with Parkinson's disease only if there is no

There is arguably no group of conditions more common and expansive in children than gastrointestinal disorders. Moreover, successful recognition, diagnosis, and management of these ailments is particularly challenging provided the breadth of potential dysfunction, as well as a general paucity of specific physical examination findings to pinpoint diagnoses. Elucidation of these conditions is made further challenging by frequent difficulty of pediatric patients to provide a detailed articulation of their symptoms. Nonetheless, a thorough history can aid in distinguishing these various diagnoses,

Measures of performance rates in speech-like or volitional nonspeech oral motor tasks are frequently used to draw inferences about articulation rate abnormalities in patients with neurologic movement disorders. The study objective was to investigate the structural relationship between rate measures of speech and of oral motor behaviors different from speech. A total of 130 patients with neurologic movement disorders and 130 healthy subjects participated in the study. Rate data was collected for oral reading (speech), rapid syllable repetition (speech-like), and rapid single articulator movemen

The temporomandibular joint receives its name from the two bones that enter into its formation, namely the temporal bone and the mandible. This complex synovial system is composed of two temporomandibular joints together with their articulating ligaments and masticatory muscles. This articulation affects other synovial joints that relate specifically to masticatory function. The causes of temporomandibular disorders are complex and multifactorial. There are numerous factors that can contribute to temporomandibular disorders. In some instances a single factor may serve one or all of these roles

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the eruption stage and that of occlusal anomalies among etiological factors for articulatory speech disorders in a series of first-graders. The results suggest that even though speech and sound production have been reported to be mature by the age of five, some spontaneous correction of speech sound articulation occurs with maturing of the articulators with age and with eruption of some permanent teeth during the first phase of the mixed dentition.

Non-oral compensatory misarticulation patterns are often associated with the speech of children with cleft palate. Despite their saliency, the etiology, frequency, and treatment of these misarticulations have not been studied extensively. The purpose of this commentary is to review what we know about these atypical patterns of articulation and address clinical assumptions regarding their etiology and treatment.

PURPOSE: One reason why the diagnosis of apraxia of speech (AOS) and its underlying impairment are often debated may lie in the fact that most patients do not display pure patterns of AOS. Mixed patterns are clearly acknowledged at other levels of impairment (e.g., lexical-semantic and lexical-phonological), and they have contributed to debate about the degree of interaction between encoding levels; by contrast, mixed impairments and mechanisms of interaction are less acknowledged at the levels of phonological and phonetic processes. Here, the author aims at bringing together empirical evidenc
