Chronic ascariasis and malnutrition.

Malnutrition is the most widespread ill of mankind. Its global distribution coincides indistinguishably with that of the common roundworm. Ascaris lumbricoides is common - infecting about one-quarter of the world's population. Acute clinical ascariasis sometimes requires hospital treatment, but chronic infections contribute to long-term malnutrition. This alone should justify greater expenditure on the treatment and control of Ascaris.

Biliary ascariasis in children.

In the Cape Town Children's Hospital ascariasis is the commonest cause for an acute abdominal emergency; over a thousand cases have been admitted with ascariasis to the paediatric surgical wards. There was a high incidence of biliary ascariasis (424 cases) and routine intravenous cholangiography should be performed in all children with abdominal pain where ascariasis is suspected. The radiographic findings and complications of Ascaris lumbricoides infection of the gastrointestinal tract are presented. Since the clinical symptoms of ascariasis are usually vague or nonspecific, the radiologist may be in a position to play a major role in the proper diagnosis of this disease.

Vitamin A absorption in ascariasis.

Vitamin A absorption was studied in a group of 28 adult patients with ascariasis and 12 healthy adult controls, using a simplified vitamin A absorption test. In over 70% of the patients with ascariasis malabsorption of vitamin A was demonstrated. Stool egg counts for ascaris were not related to the degree of vitamin A malabsorption. Of the 23 patients in whom a D-xylose absorption test was performed, seven showed excretion less than 20% in 5 hr. Immediately after expulsion of the worms, vitamin A absorption improved in 13 out of 14 patients tested (in nine to normal level). The results of this…
