Incidence of syphilis seroconversion among HIV-infected persons in Asia: results from the TREAT Asia HIV Observational Database.

INTRODUCTION: Outbreaks of syphilis have been described among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) in Western communities, whereas reports in Asian countries are limited. We aimed to characterize the incidence and temporal trends of syphilis among HIV-infected MSM compared with HIV-infected non-MSM in Asian countries. METHODS: Patients enrolled in the TREAT Asia HIV Observational Database cohort and with a negative non-treponemal test since enrolment were analyzed. Incidence of syphilis seroconversion, defined as a positive non-treponemal test after previously testing negative, was ev…

Evidence of frequent introductions of Japanese encephalitis virus from south-east Asia and continental east Asia to Japan.

The Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) circulating in Japan consists of viruses with multiple phylogenetic origins. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that some JEV strains have recently migrated from south-east and continental east Asian countries. One phylogenetic subcluster of the JEV strains circulating in Japan was closely related to viruses isolated in Vietnam and China's inland region while other JEV subclusters were related to viruses isolated in Shanghai, China. One virus subcluster, however, was isolated solely in Japan and was not found in any other Asian country. Therefore, our data sug…

Celiac Disease: Waiting to Explode in Asia.

Celiac disease (CeD) is an acquired immune enteropathy for which the presence of two factors, i.e., predisposing HLA genes (HLA DQ2/DQ8) and gluten in diet are essential for induction of the pathogenic immune response. Acute symptoms/gut injury specifically depend on the amount of gluten ingested. The incidence and prevalence of medically diagnosed CeD is expected to rise in the coming decades, and most of these people are expected to be from Asia. Through publicly available datasets, we mapped the estimated proportion of population harboring HLA DQ2/DQ8 in different regions of Asia and the pe…

Organ Transplantation in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the current landscape of deceased organ donation across the 5 Central Asian nations ( Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan ) and identified the multifactorial causes behind the regional "transplant gap." The study specifically focused on renal transplant programs, which constitute the vast majority of transplant activities and waiting lists in the region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis using a multidisciplinary approach, which included an audit of national legislative frameworks and official health mini…

Asia at the Epicenter of the Global Cardiometabolic Shift.

Cardiometabolic disease has become the dominant noncommunicable health challenge of the 21st century, with its burden increasingly centered in Asia. Rising obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia now account for more than one-third of cardiovascular mortality. This escalation reflects the interaction of biological susceptibility with rapid urbanization, digitalized food environments, physical inactivity, and persistent tobacco exposure. Health-system limitations, including low diagnosis rates, poor risk-factor control, and uneven access to essential therapies, further…

Bangkok declarations on cancer control in Asia.

The "Bangkok Declarations" highlight key strategies to reduce the cancer burden in Asia. Recognizing the role of lifestyle factors like tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and inactivity, they advocate for public health initiatives promoting healthier communities. Environmental risks must also be addressed to enhance prevention strategies. Vaccination programs targeting cancer-causing viruses are emphasized for reducing incidence rates. However, limited access to cancer screening and early detection services remains a challenge, requiring improvements to boost early intervention and patient outcomes…

Japanese encephalitis in Asia: A comprehensive review.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) which is caused by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a significant public health concern in Asia. The JEV is mainly transmitted by Culex mosquitoes breeding in flooded rice fields. The disease can range from mild flu-like symptoms to severe encephalitis and long-term neurological effects with potentially fatal outcomes with a 30% mortality rate. This review aims to gather information on JE's public health importance, JE epidemiology, history, vaccination strategies, and public health interventions in Asian countries. A systematic literature search was conducted ac…

The prevalence of foot-and-mouth disease in Asia.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is listed among the highly contagious diseases in animals and is endemic throughout the Asian continent. The disease is caused by the Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) and affects a wide variety of domesticated animals as well as wild ungulates. Clinically, the disease is described as a vesicular lesion on the tongue, muzzle, lips, gum, dental pad, interdigital cleft, coronary band, and heel of the foot. Sometimes these lesions give rise to lameness. Mastitis is also caused due to teat lesions. A biochemical test reveals that during FMD infection, there are eleva…

Changing epidemiology of hepatocellular carcinoma in Asia.

Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the second leading cause of malignant death in Asia, and Asia reports 72.5% of the world's cases in 2020. As the most common histological type, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for the majority of incidence and mortality of liver cancer cases. This review presents the changing epidemiology of HCC in Asian countries in recent years. Globally, aged, male and Asian populations remain the group with the highest risk of HCC. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are still the leading risk factors of HCC with a slight decline in m…

Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Prevention of Sparganosis in Asia.

Sparganosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larvae (spargana) of the genus Spirometra, which is widely distributed globally and threatens human health. More than 60 species of Spirometra have already been identified, and over 2000 cases have been reported. This review summarizes the prevalence of humans, frogs, snakes, and other animals with spargana. Furthermore, the infection mode, distribution, and site are summarized and analyzed. We also describe the epidemiology, molecular diagnosis, and other aspects which are of considerable significance to preventing sparganum.

Recent Trends in Orthognathic Surgery in Asia.

Anatomy and standards of beauty are different between Asians and Westerners. Unlike Westerners, Asians have a wide and prominent jaw shape but prefer a slim and soft face shape. To achieve this goal, maxillary setback and/or posterior impaction surgeries are popular among upper jaw surgery, and various adjuvant surgeries are performed simultaneously on the mandible to obtain the so-called oval shape or V-line face. In addition, according to the development of virtual surgery software and orthodontic treatment techniques, the surgery-first approach is now accepted as a reliable option for ortho…

Changing clinical management of NAFLD in Asia.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the leading cause of chronic liver disease, affecting approximately 25% of the world's population. Recently, because of the sedentary lifestyle and overnutrition resulting from urbanisation, the burden of NAFLD has rapidly increased in many Asian countries. Currently, the prevalence of NAFLD in Asia is approximately 30%, as is the case in many Western countries. In Asia, the prevalence and presentation of NAFLD vary widely across regions because of the substantial diversity in race, socioeconomic status and living environment. Furthermore, t…

Classical Examples of the Concept of the ASIA Syndrome.

Autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) was first introduced in 2011 by Shoenfeld et al. and encompasses a cluster of related immune mediated diseases, which develop among genetically prone individuals as a result of adjuvant agent exposure. Since the recognition of ASIA syndrome, more than 4400 documented cases have been reported so far, illustrated by heterogeneous clinical manifestations and severity. In this review, five enigmatic conditions, including sarcoidosis, Sjögren's syndrome, undifferentiated connective tissue disease, silicone implant incompatibility syndrome…

Current status of liver transplantation in Asia.

In spite of early adoption of the brain death legislation, and all efforts at promoting deceased donation, various social, economic and cultural factors have acted as road blocks to the furthering of deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT) in most Asian societies. On the other hand, Asian liver transplant centers have been the pioneers, innovators, and technical advancement catalysts for the world to follow, especially with regards to living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). With some high volume centers performing more than 200 LDLTs a year with good outcomes in the donor and recipient,…

Demographic characteristics of craniosynostosis patients in Asia.

PURPOSE: Craniosynostosis (CRS) is a congenital condition resulting premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures. CRS is classified according to the involved sutures into sagittal, metopic, unicoronal, unilambdoid, bicoronal, and multiple-suture CRS, with sagittal suture fusion known to be the most common type. Although multiple studies have presented demographic characteristics of CRS patients, to date, there is no study representing an Asian population. We sought to compare the demographic characteristics of Asian patients to those of Western patients, considering previous reports. MATER…

Autoimmune Hepatitis in the Asia-Pacific Area.

Autoimmune hepatitis has been considered as a relatively rare immunological liver disease, especially in the Asia-Pacific area. Although the diagnosis criteria and immunosuppressive treatment regimens have been established, there are still some challenges. According to the different presentations, the personalized management of patients who suffer from this disease, including those with chronic or acute severe onset, the autoantibody-negative phenotype and cirrhosis are necessarily descriptive. Each subgroup of patients should receive an individualized therapy. Here, we review the recent studi…
