Description of perinatal adversities in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder. According to literature data, perinatal adversities might be associated with the occurrence of ADHD, but the results are inconclusive at the moment. The aim of the present study is to describe perinatal adversities in children with ADHD. METHODS: The data of children in County Fejér Pedagogical Service in three consecutive school years (2012-2015) was analyzed. In the present sample, 219 children with special education needs were diagnosed with ADHD (age: 9.0 years, SD: 3.1 years; 36 gi

[Emotionality and temperament in attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity].

INTRODUCTION: Those who suffer from attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD) find it difficult to direct their emotions in order to solve challenges or problems. This alteration in emotional self-regulation implies greater disability than that attributed to the traditional dimensions -attention deficit and hyperactivity- with an evident impact on the development of personality. AIM: To review how the confluence of poor self-regulatory skills, emotion awareness and autonomy, and a particular temperament profile increase the risk of children diagnosed with ADHD for the de

[CHILDREN WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD): CLINICAL ACTIVITY IN ISRAEL].

This editorial relates to the study published in the current issue on how our current knowledge is practiced in screening, diagnosing and treating children suffering from ADHD in Israel. It seems that there is an awareness of the disorder by parents and teachers, thus there is no need for community screening. The roles of the different medical professions: pediatricians (after receiving training on ADHD), child neurologists and child psychiatrists are not clear enough and thus services are not utilized properly. The diagnosis demands a physical, developmental, psychosocial and mental evaluatio

Early high school engagement in students with attention/deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Students with attention/deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) continue to languish behind their peers with regard to academic achievement and education attainment. School engagement is potentially modifiable, and targeting engagement may be a means to improve education outcomes. AIMS: To investigate school engagement for students with ADHD during the crucial high school transition period and to identify factors associated with low school engagement. SAMPLE: Participants are adolescents (12-15 years) in the first and third year of high school with diagnosed ADHD (n = 130). Partici

Psychopharmacotherapy of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder in Children with Comorbid Conditions.

One or more comorbidities occur in up to 80% of children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder is also over-represented in several special populations. Pharmacotherapy can be challenging in these individuals with other conditions due to a suboptimal therapeutic response and an increased likelihood of adverse reactions. This article reviews the evidence supporting the psychopharmacologic management attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder when it occurs in individuals with common comorbidities.

Environmental risk factors by gender associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Early environmental risk factors associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been increasingly suggested. Our study investigates the maternal, pregnancy, and newborn risk factors by gender for children prescribed stimulant medication for treatment of ADHD in Western Australia. METHODS: This is a population-based, record linkage case-control study. The records of all non-Aboriginal children and adolescents born in Western Australia and aged <25 years who were diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed stimulant medication (cases = 12,991) were linked to the Midwive

Olfactory and gustatory sensitivity in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Recently, research on olfactory functions in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has become prominent, whereas gustation has never been investigated. Increased odor sensitivity was found in medication-naïve children with ADHD, but not in adult ADHD, which might be due to a dopaminergic dysregulation presumed to underlie this disorder. Taste sensitivity, in particular bitter sensitivity as a hereditary trait, also might be altered in ADHD. To examine olfactory and gustatory functions in adult ADHD patients, we assessed odor sensitivity by Sniffin' Sticks, taste sensitivity by taste

Parental rating of sleep in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems have often been associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Parents of those with ADHD and children with ADHD report sleep difficulties more frequently than healthy children and their parents. The primary objective of this paper is to describe sleep patterns and problems of 5 to 11-year-old children suffering from ADHD as described by parental reports and sleep questionnaires. METHOD: The study included 321 children aged 5-11 years (average age 8.4 years); 45 were diagnosed with ADHD, 64 had other psychiatric diagnoses, and 212 were healthy. One

Treatment of nocturnal enuresis in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder disproportionately experience voiding dysfunction and persistent nocturnal enuresis due to a combination of sphincter and detrusor overactivity and nocturnal polyuria. The different treatment approaches to nocturnal enuresis often fail in these patients. Therefore, we performed a prospective study to compare the efficacy of combination therapy with desmopressin and oxybutynin vs the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who have nocturnal enuresis. Improving antisaccade performance in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The goal of the study was to examine the effects of task manipulations on antisaccade accuracy and response times (RTs) of adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), age-matched controls, 10-year-olds and young adults. Order effects were tested by administering the task at the beginning and end of the session. Other manipulations involved a visual landmark to reduce demands on working memory and internal generation of saccades; spatially specific and non-specific cues at three intervals; and central engagement of attention through perceptual and cognitive means at three

The ipsilateral silent period in boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Characterize maturation of transcallosal inhibition (ipsilateral silent period [iSP]) in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). BACKGROUND: Maturation of the iSP is related to acquisition of fine motor skills in typically developing children suggesting that dexterous fine motor skills depend upon mature interhemispheric interactions. Since neuromotor maturation is abnormal in boys with ADHD we hypothesized that iSP maturation in these children would be abnormal. We studied iSP maturation in 12 boys with ADHD and 12 age-matched

Abnormal rhythmic motor response in children with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

Children with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulties with motor control, inhibition of motor responses, motor flexibility, and motor preparedness. We proposed that motor abnormalities in ADHD might result, at least in part, from an abnormal neuronal oscillatory mechanism necessary for motor temporal regulation. The aim of this study was to assess pacing in children with ADHD, by testing for rhythmic abnormalities of motor activity using a tapping test. Twenty-seven children (21 males, six females; aged 6 to 14 years 6 months; mean age 11 years 4 months, SD 2 years 2

Sensitivity to reward frequency in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Compared the sensitivity of boys with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to differences in reward frequency. Fifteen boys with ADHD as diagnosed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., rev.; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) and a matched control group completed a signal-detection task in which correct identification of 1 stimulus was rewarded 3 times as often as correct identification of the other. Boys in the ADHD group completed the task twice, on and off medication. Group differences emerged in response bias toward the more freq

Prediction of stimulant response in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Discrimination of stimulant-responding and nonresponding groups of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on the basis of demographic, neurophysiologic, or behavioral variables would be beneficial for clinical and theoretical reasons. Previous researchers have identified many predictor variables, but relationships between predictor and criterion variables generally have been subtle. In addition, few investigations have considered the relative predictive power of the variables. The present study evaluated the multivariate relationship between several predictor variables a

Cerebral glucose metabolism in adolescent girls with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Low cerebral metabolic rates for glucose (CMRglc) have been reported in a small sample of girls with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study was an effort to replicate this finding in a larger independent sample. METHOD: Using positron emission tomography and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose, CMRglc were compared between 10 girls with ADHD (14.10 +/- 1.91 years) and 11 normal girls (14.3 +/- 1.70 years). RESULTS: Global CMRglc was similar between ADHD and control girls. Lateralization of normalized CMRglc differed significantly between ADHD and control girls in parietal

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in childhood among adults with major depression.

The prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with childhood onset and its relationship to course and treatment outcome of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults was studied in 116 patients (ages 18-65) consecutively enrolled for treatment of MDD. Sixteen percent of the patient were found to meet full or subthreshold criteria for the DSM-III-R diagnosis of childhood ADHD. Twelve percent endorsed persistence of ADHD symptoms into adulthood. Depressed adults meeting criteria for childhood ADHD did not differ significantly from other depressed adults on any measures related

Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Are More Likely to Fail Growth Hormone Stimulation Testing than Children without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Retrospective Chart Review.

INTRODUCTION: Children with ADHD often present to pediatric endocrinologists due to growth concerns. Growth hormone stimulation testing (GHST) may be utilized as part of the workup. We evaluate whether children with ADHD and short stature or growth failure are more likely to fail GHST compared to children without ADHD. METHODS: We retrospectively studied children who underwent GHST as part of evaluation for short stature and/or growth failure and had an intact pituitary over a 16-year period (2002-2018). We performed univariate and logistic regression analyses with stratification by age. RES
