Baroreceptor control of the circulation is now generally thought to be concerned only with short term buffering of changes in arterial pressure, rather than with long term setting of pressure levels. This paper reviews evidence to the contrary, which suggests that impairment of the baroreflex, either by local changes in the carotid sinus or by environmental or genetic influences working through cortical modulation of the reflex gain, may have an important influence on long term arterial pressure. Further interest in the baroreflex has been revived by the demonstration in several large studies

The role of the autonomic nervous system in trigeminal neuralgia is discussed. While the trigeminal nerve is accompanied by both sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers, first and second branch phenomena are predominantly associated with sympathetic stimuli. Third branch phenomena, by contrast, primarily involved a parasympathetic component. Atropine sulfate and beta-receptor blockers are suggested as a therapeutic modality. On ancillary studies involving 30 patients with trigeminal neuralgia an abnormal glucose tolerance and/or increased cholesterol level was found to be present in 28 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is common in children, but its pathophysiology is still not fully understood. Despite the recognition of three major pathways, nocturnal polyuria, nocturnal bladder dysfunction and sleep disorders, their inter-relations remain elusive. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) which is greatly involved in both diuresis and sleep might have an important role in NE.
METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search of Medline database was performed, to identify articles reporting on the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in enuretic children regarding sleep regul…

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, consisting of multiple involuntary movements (motor tics) and one or more vocal (phonic) tics. It affects up to one percent of children worldwide, of whom about one third continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. The central neural mechanisms of tic generation are not clearly understood, however recent neuroimaging investigations suggest impaired cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical activity during motor control. In the current manuscript, we will tackle the relatively under-investigated role of the peripheral autonomic nervous system,…

Chagas' disease is a major endemic disease in Latin America and a great cause for concern due to its high incidence: it afflicts 16 to 18 million individuals and places over 90 million people at risk of infection. At present, five mechanisms can be proposed to explain the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiopathy: 1. direct lesion of the tissue by Trypanosoma cruzi; 2. dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (neurogenic concept); 3. microvascular disease; 4. immunologic reaction; 5. alterations in the extracellular matrix. The neurogenic concept is the most attractive explanation for the …

Intranasal delivery provides a rapid, non-invasive route to the central nervous system, bypassing the blood-brain barrier and first-pass metabolism. However, its therapeutic potential remains constrained by the nasal cavity's complex anatomy, the restricted surface area and permeability of the olfactory epithelium, and short drug residence times. Recent advances in nanotechnology and synthetic biology have enabled the development of autonomous and programmable delivery systems that can target the olfactory epithelium, enhance brain entry and sustain therapeutic release. This review highlights

Patients with asthma have exaggerated bronchoconstriction of their airways in response to certain indirect (e.g. cold air, allergens, dust, exercise) or direct (e.g. inhaled methacholine) stimuli. This 'hyper-reactivity' usually co-exists with airway inflammation, although the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these changes are not fully understood. It is likely that this hyper-reactivity is associated with abnormal autonomic nervous system (ANS) control. In particular, the parasympathetic (vagal) component of the ANS appears to be implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma. In addition, …

The autonomic nervous system, relatively understudied compared to the central nervous system, is thought to play a key role in supporting attentional engagement, a cornerstone of cognitive control in early development. To address the non-trivial challenges that complex autonomic signals present to traditional modeling, we leverage recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), an established nonlinear approach for quantifying the temporal organization of heart-rate dynamics. Here, we compute recurrence metrics to examine trait, or participant level (across the task), and state level (moment-by-mome…

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may reflect dynamic autonomic nervous system (ANS) effects. This pilot observational study tested the hypotheses that Characteristic Pain Intensity (CPI) scores correlated with 1) amplitude, 2) duration, and 3) power densities (amplitude/duration) of nocturnal ultradian cycling of the sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the ANS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In accordance with institutional review board oversight and Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines, adult subjects gave infor…

The autonomic nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating physiological processes and maintaining homeostasis through its two branches: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Dysregulation of the autonomic system, characterized by increased sympathetic activity and reduced parasympathetic tone, is a common feature in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease. This imbalance contributes to a pro-inflammatory state, exacerbating disease progression and increasing the risk for cardiovascular events. The sympathetic system promotes inflammation b…

This review explores current and emerging neuromodulation techniques targeting the cardiac autonomic nervous system for the treatment and prevention of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Arrhythmias remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with the autonomic nervous system playing a crucial role in arrhythmogenesis. Interventions span surgical, pharmacological, and bioelectronic methods. We discuss the range of neuromodulation methods targeting the stellate ganglion, the spinal region, the parasympathetic system, and other promising methods. These include stellate ganglion block…

he autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls the heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, respiration, pupillary reactivity, sweating, urination, sexual arousal, and regulates the functions of internal organs. This system provides the homeostasis of the cells, tissues, and organs throughout the body and protects against the disturbances imposed by the external and internal stressors. The ANS has three main divisions: The sympathetic nervous system (SNS), the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), and the enteric nervous system. In general, the SNS and PNS have opposing effects. Each region belongin…

Background: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction has been suggested to contribute to the high prevalence of cardiovascular complications in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), yet has not been thoroughly investigated. The current review aimed to synthesize the evidence of basal ANS function in individuals with a current diagnosis of AN and those with a previous diagnosis who had achieved weight restoration, as compared to controls. Methods: A systematic review of nine databases was conducted and studies that were published in a peer-review journal, in English, that included at least …

The central autonomic nervous system (ANS) is essential for maintaining cardiovascular and respiratory homeostasis in the newborn and has a critical role in supporting higher cortical functions. At birth, the central ANS is maturing and is vulnerable to adverse environmental and physiologic influences. Critical connections are formed early in development between the ANS and limbic system to integrate psychological and body responses. The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen Porges, describes how modulation of the autonomic vagal impulse controls social responses and that a broad range of neu…

OBJECTIVE: Central topography of autonomic nervous system (ANS) function has yet to be fully deciphered. In adults it has been shown to lateralize sympathetic and parasympathetic influence predominantly to the right and left cerebral hemispheres, respectively. We examined functional topography of central ANS in newborn subjects utilizing spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), an established measure of ANS function.
STUDY DESIGN: We studied newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy participating in a prospective study undergoing a therapeutic hypothermia protocol. We included su…
