BACKGROUND: X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a genetic peroxisomal disorder associated with tissue accumulation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). Recent evidence suggests that an excitant amino acid may be a neurotransmitter at acoustic nerve synapses in cochlear nucleus (CN).
