Bacteriology and therapy of lung abscess in children.

The bacteriology and clinical findings of ten pediatric patients with lung abscess are presented. Bacteriologic data were based on percutaneous transtracheal aspiration obtained before initiation of antimicrobial therapy. Anaerobic bacteria were present in all ten patients; in nine they were mixed with aerobic bacteria. The most frequent isolates were Peptostreptococcus (8), Peptococcus (5), Bacteroides melaninogenicus (6), and Bacteroides fragilis (3). The aerobic isolates most frequently recovered were alpha-hemolytic streptococci (5), group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (4), and Escherichia…

Bacteriology and antibiotics in acute suppurative otitis media.

One hundred and forty-seven patients with acute suppurative otitis media, were divided into three groups and treated with antibiotics (azidocillin, ampicillin, and cephalexin). The therapeutic effect was assessed bacterioloically by swabbing from the aural discharge and from the nasopharynx on the first, second, third, and seventh day after initiation of treatment. In addition, the concentration of antibiotic in the aural discharge and in the nasopharynx was determined. As compared with other published materials, there was a common occurrence of Haemophilus influenzae and S. Aureus. Hemolytic

Bacteriology of the gut and its clinical implications.

The bacteriology of the gastrointestinal tract is rapidly changing in laboratory techniques and clinical correlations. The flora is found to be very complex, predominantly anaerobic, and importantly dependent on diet. An etiologic role for colon bacteria in colon cancer is suggested by correlations between epidemiologic data and prevalent dietary patterns and stool culture findings. Cultures from aspiration pneumonia, subphrenic abscess, and other intra-abdominal sepsis all yield anaerobes, and for best results antibiotic therapy should combat them as well as aerobes.

Bronchiectasis: a bacteriological profile.

The occurrence of bronchiectasis can involve a combination of many environmental factors, including infection. The aim of our work is to determine the bacteriological profile of bronchiectasis. This is a retrospective study of 100 patients hospitalized in between January 2010 and July 2013. The average age was 48 years with a 58% female predominance. Symptomatology was by a bronchial syndrome in 90% of cases. Bacteriological examination was able to isolate the microbe in 35% of cases. In our study it was through the examination of sputum cytology in 27% of cases, through the examination of liq

Bacteriological Study of Pyoderma.

Two hundred and twenty cases of pyoderma were investigated to study the bacterial aetiology. Folliculitis formed the largest-clinical group followed by infectious eczematoid dermatitis, secondary infection, impetigo, miscellaneous, furuncles and acne in descending order of frequency. A total of 172 micro-organisms were isolated from the infected specimens examined. A single infecting organism was isolated from 65.5% and more than one type of organism from 6.3% of cases. No organism was isolated from 62 (29.2%) cases, Coagulase positive staphylococcus was isolated from 107 (48.6%) beta haemolyt

[Bacteriological studies of peritonitis].

Bacterial infections of the peritoneum may be primary (pneumococcal peritonitis of childhood). These are rare, as are Streptococcal and Staphylococcal peritonitis in the neonate, following umbilical or tegumental infections. The great majority of cases of peritonitis are secondary to an adjacent inflammation, a perforation of the gastro-intestinal tract, or trauma, which may be surgical in origin. The microbial flora involved is generally mixed, with a high proportion of anaerobic organisms, reflecting the composition of the intestinal flora, and in particular, that of the colon. Infections du

Veterinary bacteriology in Denmark from the 1880s to 2022.

This paper gives an account of the history of veterinary bacteriology including clinical veterinary bacteriology as well as the area of veterinary public health in Denmark from the 1880s to 2022. We describe key persons, including B. Bang, C.O. Jensen, K.A. Jensen and others who made important contributions to the development of these areas of microbiological expertise, and we discuss how challenges ranging from bovine tuberculosis to bacterial antimicrobial resistance have been met. Further, we describe progress in research on important bacterial pathogens both with regard to animal clinical …

Bacteriology and resistance patterns of otitis media with effusion.

OBJECTIVES: Following the increased use of antibiotics, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant species in pediatric patients with otitis media has become a problem in recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate change in bacterial species, antibiotic resistance, and detection rate of highly pathogenic species, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa according to the number of repeated ventilation tube insertion (VTI) procedures in pediatric patients diagnosed with otitis media with effusion (OME). MATERIALS & METHODS: From May 2010 to Ju

Bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with nasal polyposis.

Aspirates from 48 chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses from patients who had nasal polyposis were processed for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacterial growth was present in 46 (96%) specimens. Aerobic or facultative bacteria were present in 6 (13%) specimens, anaerobic bacteria alone in 18 (39%), and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in 22 (48%). There were 110 bacterial isolates (2.4 per specimen). Thirty-nine of the isolates were aerobic or facultative organisms (0.85 per specimen). The predominant aerobic or facultative organisms were: Staphylococcus aureus, microaerophilic streptoc
