Phage types of Salmonella typhi isolated in Malaysia over the 10-year period 1970-1979.

The pattern of phage types of 2553 strains of Salmonella typhi isolated over the 10-year period 1970-9 was studied. During the period 29 different phage types were encountered, not including the categories of 'untypable strains', 'degraded Vi-strains' and Vi negative strains. For the period as a whole, the commonest phage types encountered were A (20.9%), E1 (14.8%), D1 (10.3%), degraded Vi positive strains (10.3%), untypable Vi strains (7.3%), C4 (7.1%), D2 (4.4%), E2 (3.9%) and type 25 (2.6%). There were phage types which appeared in the early years of the period and then disappeared (types

Epidemic typhoid in Chile: analysis by molecular and conventional methods of Salmonella typhi strain diversity in epidemic (1977 and 1981) and nonepidemic (1990) years.

From 1977 to 1986, Chile experienced an important typhoid fever epidemic, despite statistics that indicated apparently improving levels of s … strains with unique characteristics. To investigate this hypothesis, we used conventional methods (bacteriophage typing and biotyping) and molecular methods (restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, ribotyping, IS200 typing, and PCR amplification of the fliC-d gene) to study a population of 149 S. typhi isolates during 1977, 1981, and 1990, the years that i …

Bacteriophage therapy as an innovative strategy for the treatment of Periprosthetic Joint Infection: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) following hip and knee arthroplasty is a catastrophic complication in orthopaedic surgery. It has long been a key focus for orthopaedic surgeons in terms of prevention and management. With the increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance in recent years, finding more targeted treatment methods has become an increasingly urgent issue. Bacteriophage Therapy (BT) has emerged as a promising adjunctive treatment for bone and joint infections in recent years. It not only effectively kills bacteria but also demonstrates significant anti-biofilm activi

Typing of Listeria monocytogenes by monocin and phage receptors.

One hundred strains of Listeria monocytogenes from both sporadic and epidemic cases were typed by monocin production combined with phage receptor and reverse phage receptor methods. The monocin-phage combination gave 72 types with 100% typability and 97% reproducibility. The results were compared to those of serotyping, phage typing, ribotyping, multilocus enzyme electrophoresis, restriction enzyme analysis and RAPD (random amplification of polymorphic DNA). The monocin/phage types were comparable in terms of discrimination with other methods for epidemiological investigations. The index of di

Emergence and Evolutionary Response of Vibrio cholerae to Novel Bacteriophage, Democratic Republic of the Congo1.

Cholera causes substantial illness and death in Africa. We analyzed 24 toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 strains isolated in 2015-2017 from patients in the Great Lakes region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Strains originating in southern Asia appeared to be part of the T10 introduction event in eastern Africa. We identified 2 main strain lineages, most recently a lineage corresponding to sequence type 515, a V. cholerae cluster previously reported in the Lake Kivu region. In 41% of fecal samples from cholera patients, we also identified a novel ICP1 (Bangladesh cholera phage 1) bacterioph

A prospective study of phage types & biotypes of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi isolated from hospitalized children in Kolkata, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Kolkata and its suburbs in eastern India faced an epidemic of typhoid fever in 1990. A prospective, hospital and laboratory based study over a period of 12 yr (1990-2001), on the phage typing and biotyping pattern of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi was carried out, to see if there has been a change. METHODS: A total of 338 S. enterica serotype Typhi isolates from 1491 blood samples were phage typed and biotyped. The mean age of isolation was calculated. RESULTS: The age distribution of subjects (neonates to 12 yr) has been analysed. Of the 338 (22.7%) isolates obt

Isolation and partial characterization of Salmonella Gallinarum bacteriophage.

Infections caused by Salmonella remain a major public health problem worldwide. Animal food products, including poultry meat and eggs, are considered essential components in the individual's daily nutrition. However, chicken continues to be the main reservoir for Salmonella spp. Poultry farmers use several types of antibiotics to treat pathogens. This can pose a health risk as pathogens can build antibiotic resistance in addition to the possibility of accumulation of these antibiotics in food products. The use of phages in treating poultry pathogens is increasing worldwide due to its potential

Pathogenic diversity of Escherichia coli and the emergence of 'exotic' islands in the gene stream.

Escherichia coli is a highly adaptive bacterial species that is both a member of the commensal intestinal flora and a versatile pathogen associated with numerous types of intestinal and systemic infections in humans and other animals. The spectrum of diseases caused by E. coli is due to the acquisition of specific virulence genes harbored on plasmids, bacteriophages, or within distinct DNA segments termed pathogenicity islands (PAIs) that are absent from the genomes of commensal E. coli strains. PAIs are likely to have been transferred horizontally and may have integrated into the E. coli chro

Phage and MLVA typing of Salmonella enteritidis isolated from layers and humans in Belgium from 2000-2010, a period in which vaccination of laying hens was introduced.

The aim of the study was to characterize isolates of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) obtained from humans and layer farms in Belgium collected during 2000-2010. Three periods were compared, namely (i) before implementation of vaccination (2000-2004), (ii) during voluntary vaccination (2005-2006) and (iii) during implementation of the national control program (NCP) for Salmonella including mandatory vaccination against S. Enteritidis (2007-2010). The characteristics compared across time periods were distributions of phage type and multiple-locus variable number tandem-r

Effects of the combination of anti-PcrV antibody and bacteriophage therapy in a mouse model of Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia.

Acute lung injury caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is attributed to the translocation of cytotoxin into pulmonary epithelial cells via the P. aeruginosa type III secretion system. This virulence can be blocked with a specific antibody against PcrV in this secretion system. However, because anti-PcrV antibodies do not have bactericidal activity, the treatment of bacteria depends on the phagocytic system of the host. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of combination therapy with an anti-PcrV antibody and bactericidal bacteriophages on acute lung injury and subsequent death in

Genesis of a novel Shigella flexneri serotype by sequential infection of serotype-converting bacteriophages SfX and SfI.

BACKGROUND: Shigella flexneri is the major pathogen causing bacillary dysentery. Fifteen serotypes have been recognized up to now. The genesis of new S. flexneri serotypes is commonly mediated by serotype-converting bacteriophages. Untypeable or novel serotypes from natural infections had been reported worldwide but have not been generated in laboratory. RESULTS: A new S. flexneri serotype-serotype 1 d was generated when a S. flexneri serotype Y strain (native LPS) was sequentially infected with 2 serotype-converting bacteriophages, SfX first and then SfI. The new serotype 1 d strain agglutin
