Fragrances may cause allergic contact dermatitis. Data on patients who were patch tested, between 2000 and 2015, with fragrance allergens included in the Brazilian baseline series (balsam of Peru, colophony and fragrance mix I), were collected and analyzed. Of these patients, 258 (13.8%) were positive for fragrance markers, 9.8% being positive for fragrance mix I. Among these 258 there was a predominance of women in their 40s, with hand eczema. In 1847 Schleisner (b. 1818) was sent from Copenhagen to the Vestmanna Islands in Iceland to study the epidemic of tetanus neonatorum. The neonatal mortality in those islands at that time was 600-740 per 1000 children. He built a small hospital and introduced treatment with Peru balsam of the umbilicus. Schleisner probably assumed that the infection was caused by airborne infection, contact infection or poor hygiene. The neonatal mortality fell to about 50 per 1000. The frequencies of cosmetics intolerance and contact allergy to colophony were investigated among 116 singers and dancers and 16 make-up artists. Participants were interviewed, examined and patch tested with a standard series and materials from the opera house. Common skin lesions were found in 1/3 of participants and more than 50% had a history of intolerance to cosmetics. Colophony gave positive patch test reactions in only 3 subjects. Six patients with contact dermatitis to propolis are reported (3 women, 3 men; mean age 57 years). The Scandinavian photopatch test procedure has been applied to 745 patients with suspected photodermatoses during the years 1980-1981. Our experience has been encouraging with the recording of several relevant reactions. A total of 132 positive photocontact reactions and 120 ordinary contact reactions were seen. It is important to differentiate worsening of a cutaneous eruption following topical therapy from lack of response to the medication. A study to determine the origin of contact dermatitis secondary to topical therapy was conducted among 87 patients with this kind of contact dermatitis. Sixteen patch tests with chemical compounds known to be allergenic were done. The possibility for patch testing procedures to detect contact allergy was examined in 85 hospitalized patients with forms of psoriasis. Exclusion criteria were active lesions on the back, the use of strong topical corticosteroids, methotrexate, cyclosporin and UV therapy.
