[Long-term outcomes of bandage therapeutic-optical keratoplasty in the treatment of keratoconus].

UNLABELLED: Intrastromal keratoplasty has recently been widely used in the surgical treatment of keratoconus (KC). In 2013, a new type of interlamellar keratoplasty operation was developed - bandage therapeutic-optical keratoplasty (BTOK). PURPOSE: Evaluation of the long-term outcomes of surgical treatment of stages II and III progressive KC with BTOK technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 107 patients (126 eyes): group 1 with stage II KC - 78 eyes, 100% of these patients were observed for 1 year, 52 eyes (66%) for 3 years, and 18 eyes (23%) for 5 years; group 2 - 48 eyes with s

Haddenham Easywrap: an alternative to compression bandaging in chronic oedema and wound care.

Haddenham Easywrap has been available since 2016 and since then case studies have been presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the product in clinical practice. The aim of the article is to demonstrate how its use in chronic oedema, and wound care is beneficial and cost effective and how versatile one product can be in treating both of these conditions. Information gained from the evaluation of easywrap in wound care and management of chronic oedema, demonstrates that easywrap can be a suitable cost effective alternative to traditional compression therapy modalities, whilst improving concorda

Improvement of Refractory Peripheral Edema With Multilayered Compression Bandaging: A Case Report.

Background and purposeLower extremity edema, which can be caused by several factors, is often poorly managed with commonly prescribed compression stockings and diuretics. Diuretics are often erroneously given in all forms of edema and may cause problems because their long-term application may induce chronicity of the edema due to disturbance of the renin-angiotensin relationship. Compression therapy, although effective against venous edema, is widely underused.Case descriptionA 64-year-old man with a history of hypertension, coronary artery disease, psoriasis, and multiple myeloma was admitted

Pterygium removal using a polyethylene glycol hydrogel adherent ocular bandage.

PURPOSE: To describe the result of using a polyethylene glycol hydrogel contact lens (ReSure; Ocular Therapeutix, Inc, Bedford, MA) as a protective bandage over denuded areas of Tenons after pterygium removal. METHODS: Five sequential patients underwent pterygium removal with a conjunctival autograft and painting of bare Tenons in the area of the graft retrieval with a biodegradable polymer, and these patients were followed for 1 year for immediate postoperative pain, epithelial healing, and long-term conjunctival scarring. RESULTS: All patients showed prolonged persistence of the polymer fo

Cranioplasty with bandaging. New forms of limitation of life support and organ donation.

Most of transplanted organs are obtained from brain death (BD) donors. In neurocritical patients with catastrophic injuries and decompressive craniectomy (DC), which show a dreadful development in spite of this treatment, DC could be a futile tool to avoid natural progress to BD. We propose if cranial compressive bandage (cranioplasty with bandage) could be an ethically correct practice, similar to other life-sustaining treatment limitation (LSTL) common methods. Based on a clinical case, we contacted with the Assistance Ethics Committee and some bioethics professionals asking them two questio

[Necrotizing fasciitis of the thoracoabdominal wall complicating Dujarier's bandage: a case report].

The necrotizing fasciitis (NF) means a serious infection of the subcutis, the fascia and superficial dermis secondarily. We report the case of a patient with cellulitis NF of the thoracoabdominal wall complicating Dujarier's bandage. It was monobacterial NF caused by β hemolytic streptococcus, whose development was supported through an appropriate medical and surgical care. The situation mentioned is the occurrence of secondary infection of skin necrosis occurred in the bandage too tight opposite the support zone of the elbow on the trunk. We point out, through this case, the importance of the

Fatal intra-operative pulmonary embolism following application of an Esmarch bandage.

The objective of this paper is to raise the awareness of a possible fatal complication during operations in the lower limbs, when an Esmarch bandage is used for exsanguination of the affected limb during the operation. After reviewing the literature, four cases of fatal massive pulmonary embolism have been identified after Esmarch bandage application in trauma patients [Acta Anaesthesiol Belg 50(2) (1999) 95, Reg. Anaesth 6 (1983) 83, Anesthesiology 58 (1983) 373, Anaesthesia 25(3) (1970) 445] but there is no any reference to an elective case. The authors would like to report two cases of fata

Soft contact lens bandage for Ramsay Hunt syndrome with facial palsy.

A patient under the primary care of a physician was referred to a military O.D. who subsequently referred the patient to the author as a consulting contact lens specialist. The patient exhibited the Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and was unable to blink or close her right eye. Patching had been attempted but was discontinued due to the neuralgia of the epidermal tissue of the lids. A hydrophilic contact lens was used to bandage the cornea. The patient was thereby able to maintain corneal integrity until the viral problem subsided and she regained her ability to function normally through the interdiscipl

Wrist Splinting versus a Placebo Soft Bandage for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Wrist splinting is a common treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but there is little evidence supporting its efficacy. METHODS: In this parallel-group clinical trial, patients with primary idiopathic CTS with symptoms for at least 1 month and no previous treatment were randomly assigned to wear either a rigid wrist splint or placebo soft bandage (allowed full wrist motion) for 6 weeks. If symptoms persisted after 6 weeks, treatment was continued for 4 more weeks. If symptoms persisted after 12 weeks, surgery was considered. Co-primary outcomes were change in the six-item CT

Dual action electrochemical bandage operated by a programmable multimodal wearable potentiostat.

We have developed electrochemical bandage (e-bandage) prototypes that generate the reactive oxygen species hypochlorous acid (HOCl) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for potential use to treat biofilm-infected wounds in humans. We have shown that both e-bandage-generated HOCl and H2O2 kill biofilms in vitro and in infected wounds on mice, with the former being more active in vitro. The H2O2-generating e-bandage, more so than the HOCl-generating e-bandage, was associated with improved healing of infected wounds. Here, a strategy in which H2O2 and HOCl are alternately generated-for dual action-was exp

Decision-making on the use of compression hosiery and compression bandaging: a systematic review.

This systematic literature review was carried out by a final-year nursing student in response to clinical experience, and to understand the rationale and evidence around managing venous ulcers. In the student's clinical experience, the two most commonly used treatment methods were forms of compression hosiery and compression bandaging. The CINAHL, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, Internurse and MEDLINE databases were searched for literature published over the period 2003-2023. From the resulting five papers, five key themes were identified: types of compression systems used and the rationale

Wearable Wireless Tyrosinase Bandage and Microneedle Sensors: Toward Melanoma Screening.

Wearable bendable bandage-based sensor and a minimally invasive microneedle biosensor are described toward rapid screening of skin melanoma. These wearable electrochemical sensors are capable of detecting the presence of the tyrosinase (TYR) enzyme cancer biomarker in the presence of its catechol substrate, immobilized on the transducer surface. In the presence of the surface TYR biomarker, the immobilized catechol is rapidly converted to benzoquinone that is detected amperometrically, with a current signal proportional to the TYR level. The flexible epidermal bandage sensor relies on printing

Variability in compression pressure of multi-layer bandaging applied by lymphedema therapists.

BACKGROUND: The success in multi-layer bandaging (MLB) relies on the technique of the therapists. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the compression pressure of MLB by lymphedema therapists. METHODS: We investigated the pressure of MLB applied by 48 lymphedema therapists. The average age was 43.5 (range 23-66) years old. Seventeen (35.4%) of the therapists had the clinical experience of MLB. We prepared ordinary compression materials and asked them to apply MLB to the whole lower limb of healthy volunteers, presuming moderate lymphedema. We attached the probe of Picopress at the Achil

A patellar bandage improves mobility but not static balance in elderly female fallers.

BACKGROUND: The deterioration in the somatosensory and motor systems observed with increasing age can cause balance problems. Studies have shown that the use of infrapatellar bandages can enhance proprioception and improve postural balance. AIMS: To evaluate the effect of an infrapatellar bandage on static balance and mobility in elderly female fallers and non-fallers. METHODS: Forty older women (20 fallers and 20 non-fallers) were evaluated. Mobility (Timed Up and Go test) and balance (force platform) were measured in the presence and absence of additional sensory information (elastic infra
