The idiopathic facial paralysis or Bell's palsy installs abruptly or within a few hours, without any apparent cause. It corresponds to approximately 75% of all peripheral facial palsies. Three theories try to explain its pathogenecity: vascular-ischemic, viral and auto-immune. We reviewed the records of the EMG Sector, Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual (São Paulo, Brazil), from 1985 to 1995 and found 239 cases of Bell's palsy. Data were analysed according to age, gender, seasonal distribution of cases. There was a predominance of cases in the 31-60 age bracket (40.59%). The female gender w

Bell's palsy or idiopathic palsy is the most common disorder affecting the facial nerve. Diagnosis is primarily one of exclusion. There is typically an acute unilateral facial paresis that evolves in 24 to 48 hours. Etiology and pathophysiology are heavily disputed, and as of yet unknown. The natural history of Bell's palsy is favorable. Eight-four percent show satisfactory recovery without any treatment, however 16% suffer moderate to severe sequelae. Prognosis is influenced by degree of paresis, age of patient, and time until first signs of recovery. Prognostic testing currently involves var

The annual incidence of Bell's palsy in three consecutive years--1984, 1985, and 1986--was investigated in Ehime Prefecture in Japan, which has a population of 1,530,000. The number of new patients with Bell's palsy was solicited from 1,377 medical institutions and their referral hospitals. The clinical records of the 15 main hospitals were examined personally by the author to confirm the exact numbers. Special care was taken to ensure minimal error in the present epidemiologic investigation. The annual incidence of Bell's palsy per 100,000 population was found to be 30, and no annual variatio

This is a concluding report of a study in which only patients with Bell's palsy initially seen within ten days of onset are included. The purposes are to observe the natural course of the disorder and to illustrate electromyographic EMG) criteria by which early forecast of recovery is possible. Appraisals of facila muscle strength, nerve stimulation responses and electromyographic needle electrode examinations correlated with the time required for recovery and the relative degree of recovery of patients with Bell's palsy. Three categories of recovery are evident. Of 90 patients, 79% recovered
