This study explores midwives' perceptions of bereavement care for women experiencing perinatal loss through metaphor analysis. Perinatal loss is a traumatic event that also affects midwives emotionally and professionally, yet their experiences remain underexplored. Data were collected via an online semi-structured form from Turkish midwives who had previously cared for bereaved women. Using metaphorical expressions, participants conveyed emotional, cognitive, and professional reflections on bereavement care. Metaphors were identified, coded, and grouped into overarching themes. Three themes em…

Bereaved individuals experiencing prolonged grief often struggle to accept loss and manage emotional distress, making them a key focus of gr … d negative emotions, while self-immersion (first-person) decreased positive emotions when recalling bereavement. Study 3 implemented a brief intervention where participants with elevated grief completed an expressive writing exercise using a self-distancing perspective (n = 16) or a self-immersion perspective (n = 15) for 15 min per day for three days. BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment increases the risk of depression, especially after experiencing a stressful life event, such as bereavement. Employing emotion regulation strategies can mitigate the impact childhood maltreatment has on depression later in life following the loss of a spouse.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated how cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression moderated the impact of childhood maltreatment and depressive symptoms following spousal bereavement.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We examined 130 bereaved individuals 3 months after the death of a spouse, 4 months after the deat…

Differences in distress within couples who have experienced the sudden death of a child were examined. Results from two independent samples (N = 50 couples and N = 60 couples) were compared. The SCL-90-R and the BSI were used to measure global psychological distress and distress in nine symptom dimensions. Paired t tests revealed similar findings in the two samples: Within couples, women had significantly greater global distress than men and significantly greater distress than men in most symptom dimensions. Hostility scores within couples were similar and indicated a high level of hostility.

The large number of refugees in the world must cope with the loss of family and homeland. This paper proposes a new concept of cultural bereavement and presents a framework for its identification in the clinical interview with refugees. The cultural bereavement interview explores reactions to personal losses and to losses of both the social systems and the cultural meanings. Eleven areas are systematically explored, the first nine are indicators of bereavement and the tenth and eleventh are "antidotes" to cultural bereavement. The cultural bereavement interview can provide a clinical framework…

This study reports on the findings from a 6-year follow-up of a randomized trial of the Family Bereavement Program (FBP) on the outcomes for spousally bereaved parents. Spousally bereaved parents (N = 131) participated in the trial in which they were randomly assigned to receive the FBP (N = 72) or literature control (N = 59). Parents were assessed at four time points: pretest, posttest, and 11-month and 6-year follow-up. They reported on mental health problems, grief, and parenting at all four time periods. At the 6-year follow-up, parents reported on additional measures of persistent complex…

This study examined the experiences of loss among bereaved adults, and the association between loss-related factors and mental health outcomes. Participants were 2023 bereaved adults from the United Kingdom and Ireland who completed measures of their bereavement experiences and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and somatization. The highest proportion of participants and those at greatest risk of meeting criteria for all disorders were those with less time since loss, who were in contact with the deceased every day or not at all in the year prior to their death, experienced sudden unnatural dea…

AIMS: To test the feasibility of surveying bereaved next-of-kin in the South Island about their perceptions of end-of-life care for people over 18 years of age; to report results; and to identify issues for future research.
METHOD: The study used the VOICES (Views of Informal Carers Evaluation of Services) questionnaire from the UK, adapted for use in Aotearoa New Zealand. Identification of next-of-kin for all South Island deaths September-November 2017 was undertaken by a commercial firm specialising in such work. Addresses of next-of-kin were sought from the Electoral Roll, with 1,813 eligi

BACKGROUND: Maltreated youth are at an elevated risk for the development of problem behaviors. Coping with the death of a family member or close friend during adolescence, referred to as bereavement, is a stressful event that could potentiate risk linked to maltreatment. However, developmental research suggests that youth adjustment is a product of multiple risk and protective factors. Although maltreated youth who experience loss may be particularly vulnerable to behavior problems, personal and contextual factors may attenuate or exacerbate youths' risk for internalizing and externalizing psy…

The First World War was a turning point in the cultural history of death and bereavement in Australia. The mass deaths of some 60,000 soldiers overseas led to communal rituals of mourning for the war dead and minimal public expressions of private grief. The mass slaughter of so many young men and the interminable grief of so many families devalued the deaths of civilians at home and helped to create a new cultural model of suppressed and privatised grieving which deeply constrained the next two generations. Emotional and expressive grieving became less common, mourning ritual was minimised and…

Since 1980, the DSM-III and its various iterations through the DSM-IV-TR have systematically excluded individuals from the diagnosis of major depressive disorder if symptoms began within months after the death of a loved one (2 months in DSM-IV), unless the depressive syndrome was 'severely' impairing and/or accompanied by specific features. This criterion became known as the 'bereavement exclusion'. No other adverse life events were noted to negate the diagnosis of major depressive disorder if all other symptomatic, duration, severity and distress/impairment criteria were met. However, studie…

OBJECTIVE: Research of inpatient suicide is dominated by studies of epidemiology, predictors and prevention of suicide. In contrast, burden and needs of the bereaved are still not systematically evaluated.
METHODS: All relatives of inpatient suicides of depressive or schizophrenic patients in the years 1995 to 2004 (n = 20) got an invitation for an interview about the suicide, their burden and needs due to the suicide of their family member. 13 relatives could be contacted, 9 (69.2 %) bereaved family members could be interviewed. The recorded data were analysed using a summarizing content ana

The concept of recovery is integral to the work of bereavement professionals, though there remains considerable debate as to the precise definition and applicability of the term. A number of factors have contributed to the controversy; competing bereavement models, for instance, have given rise to fundamental differences in the way that recovery is conceptualized, whereas an epistemological divide between researchers and practitioners has further hindered theorists' efforts to arrive at a definition with far-ranging explanatory power. An examination of fundamental concepts from bereavement lit…

In this study, we extended previous research by concentrating on sleep- and grief-related symptoms in a cohort of bereaved college students, in view of the potential for each of these problems to exacerbate the other. A sample of 815 college students completed the Inventory of Complicated Grief (H. G. Prigerson & S. C. Jacobs, 2001), along with an assessment of diagnostic criteria for insomnia and associated sleep behaviors. As predicted, the rate of insomnia was significantly higher (22%) in the bereaved sample than in a nonbereaved comparison group (17%), a difference that was particularly p

This study examined whether symptoms of complicated grief at baseline predicted suicidal ideation during a depressive episode in elderly bereaved individuals. Over a 17-month period, serial ratings of suicidal ideation, hopelessness, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and complicated grief were obtained from 130 elderly participants who had lost their spouses within the past 2 years. Groups of active and passive suicidal ideators, as well as nonideator controls, were compared via analysis of variance (ANOVA) with respect to levels of complicated grief, depression, and anxiety. OBJECTIVE: This study compares the psychological symptoms and bereavement distress of individuals bereaved by AIDS with a group bereaved by a cancer death, and addresses the question of whether an AIDS death is associated with a higher rate of adverse psychosocial factors that may increase risk of psychological morbidity in the bereaved individuals.

A brief, standardized intervention program to facilitate children's adjustment to the terminal illness and death of a parent posed the following implementation problems: estimation of patient life expectancy; engagement of the family in crisis; adhesion to the parental guidance model; and termination of formal clinical intervention. Resolution of these issues is described, and adaptation of such programs to other high-risk populations is considered.

In the modern world the recognition, understanding and treatment of bereavement in recent widows, widowers, those who experienced severe medical and surgical trauma, and victims of disasters is essential for all physicians, rescue workers such as the International Red Cross, and the community in general. This paper reviews the consequences of personal encounters with catastrophic events, as well as methods of immediate and long-term management. Similarly, the dynamic manifestations and treatment of psychologic dissonance in the family of victims, the community, and survivors are addressed. Of …

Immediately following a rail disaster in Sydney, Australia, on January 18, 1977, in which 83 people were killed, an attempt was made to organize a preventive psychiatry outreach program for the relatives of the bereaved and the survivors. Bereavement counseling was offered to all families considered to be at risk for development of postbereavement morbidity. A follow-up study was performed 15 to 18 months later to assess the level of functioning of the bereaved relatives. The next of kin of 36 victims (43 per cent of the total number killed) were interviewed and filled in questionnaires (gener…

Grief is a universally experienced response to the loss of a significant person, representing a profoundly stressful life event that can have lasting impacts on mental and physical health. Despite its inevitability, the neural mechanisms underlying grief remain poorly understood, hindering the development of effective interventions to improve outcomes for individuals coping with loss. To address this gap, we systematically reviewed functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies related to brain connectivity, structural changes, peripheral physiology, and neuroendocrine, imm
