BACKGROUND: It is controversial whether or not beta-blockers are effective in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) who are complicated by persistent atrial fibrillation (AF).
METHODS: We attempted to determine the potential differences in the efficacy between atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm in 70 CHF patients with NYHA class II-IV and radionuclide ejection fraction (LVEF) <40% who received metoprolol or carvedilol over 16 weeks.
RESULTS: Left ventricular end-diastolic dimension was decreased in AF group (n=24) 4 weeks (early) and 16 to 48 weeks (late) after introduction of beta-

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most commonly encountered sustained arrhythmia. Heart rate control, reduction of symptoms, and prevention of embolism are major goals of treatment. Whether the strategy of cardioversion with subsequent maintenance of sinus rhythm has an advantage over heart rate control is under active investigation. Digoxin, non-dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonists, beta-adrenoceptor antagonists (beta-blockers), and amiodarone are the pharmacologic agents most commonly used to achieve rate control. In patients with drug-resistant AF, atrioventricular nodal ablation (or m

Circadian blood pressure rhythm exhibits a typical biphasic pattern in normotensives and in patients with primary hypertension. It is, however, disturbed in patients with secondary hypertension. There is ample evidence suggesting a major role for the sympatho-adrenergic system in regulating this rhythm. In order to investigate this relationship more accurately, the sympatho-adrenergic activity was studied in 20 patients with normal blood pressure, 20 patients with primary hypertension, and in patients with several diseases characterized by an abnormal catecholamine secretion, e.g. two pheochro

In part V of a series of papers on epidemiology and drug prevention of stroke and other thromboembolic complications of atrial fibrillation the authors analyze data of randomized trials exhibiting ability of long term use of beta-adrenoblockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor antagonists and statins to prevent atrial fibrillation. They also discuss results of short term studies demonstrating improved efficacy of electrical and pharmacological cardioversion in patients with atrial fibrillation after pretreatment with verapamil, beta-adrenoblockers, and angiotensi

OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics of electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients with anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis.
METHODS: Anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients admitted to the Department of Neurology between January 2012 and June 2016 were enrolled. All patients underwent electroencephalogram (EEG) at least once in the disease peak stage, and received tumor screening, symptomatic therapy, and immunotherapy. Patients received outcome evaluation every 6months after the immunotherapy, and modified Rankin scale (mRS) 0-2 was defined as favorable outcome.
RESULTS:

Several studies showed the effectiveness of theta/beta Neurofeedback (NF) training (i.e., decrease theta power and simultaneously increase beta power) in treating different psychiatric conditions characterized by impaired cognitive control. However, investigations concerning Gambling Disorder (GD) have not yet been conducted. Thus, the main aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of 11 theta/beta NF sessions in the treatment of a patient with GD. A psychological and neuropsychological assessment was performed before and after NF. A general improvement in symptoms severity

A diagnosis of pathological gambling met ICD-10 and DSM-IV criteria. Based on the electroencephalographic data, two types of disturbances of electric activity were singled out: (1) abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-rhythm and (2) the disturbance of mechanisms of synchronized slow waves generating associated with the alpha-rhythm abnormalities. Despite the fact that patients did not abuse drugs, they had changes similar to those in drug addicts, i.e. the increase of index and power of beta-rhythm, abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-

Propafenone is an antiarrhythmic agent with fast sodium channel, calcium channel, and beta-adrenergic receptor blocking properties. The effects of propafenone on arrhythmias, free intracellular calcium and left ventricular performance were studied using perfused rat hearts during (i) pacing-induced ventricular fibrillation and (ii) infusion with 2.65 x 10(-6) M, 5.3 x 10(-6) M and 7.9 x 10(-6) M propafenone hydrochloride (corresponding to approximately 1, 2 and 3 mg kg-1 body weight). A bolus of 1 mg kg-1 propafenone during ventricular fibrillation resulted in a decrease in intracellular calci

Unlike amiodarone, beta-blockers have proved ineffective in the treatment of severe ventricular rhythm disorders encountered in hypertrophic myocardiopathy. We tried to evaluate the efficacy of sotalol, a betablocker with anti-arhythmic properties, like amiodarone, on the supraventricular and ventricular rhythm disorders of this disease. 13 patients (6 men and 7 women, mean age 53.5 +/- 26.5 years) were evaluated with a 48 hours electrocardiographic recording, before and 8 and 120 days after a sotalol treatment at a mean dose of 290 mg/day (160 to 640 mg). The diagnosis of hypertrophic myocard

The EEG in REM sleep is markedly different from the EEG in non-REM sleep; however, very little research has been conducted analyzing the transition from NREM to REM sleep. The purpose of this study was to describe the changes in EEG power spectra that coincide with significant physiological events throughout the transition from stage 2 to REM sleep. Furthermore, a comparison of the stage 2 to REM transition between narcoleptic patients and normal sleepers was conducted. Five female and five male patients diagnosed with narcolepsy-cataplexy and 10 normal sleepers matched for age and gender part

In free-moving male rats, when the hippocampal theta rhythm is artificially driven by stimulation in the septum at frequencies between 5 and 10 Hz, the function relating frequency to the threshold current required to drive the theta rhythm has a minimum at 7.7 Hz. This minimum is eliminated by anxiolytic drugs. Dose-response curves for this effect are reported for chlordiazepoxide, diazepam and meprobamate. The effect of meprobamate was reversed by two gamma-aminobutyrateA antagonists, picrotoxin and bicuculline, which have previously been shown to be without effects of their own. The gamma-am

Hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT, EC 2.1.1.4) catalyzes the methylation of acetylserotonin to complete the synthesis of melatonin in the pineal and retina. A complete 1728 nucleotide cDNA encoding rat pineal HIOMT was isolated, characterized, and used to evaluate day/night levels of HIOMT mRNA. As previously reported for HIOMT enzyme activity, HIOMT mRNA levels were also greater in the pineal than in the retina. Northern blot analysis and in situ hybridization were useful for detection of HIOMT mRNA in the pineal but not the retina, whereas the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain re

A circadian rhythm in acid phosphatase and hexosaminidase was found in adult male hamsters exposed to a long photoperiod (14:10 h light/dark [LD]; lights on 06.00 h) and killed at 08.00, 14.00, 20.00, 02.00, 04.00, 05.50 and 0.615 h. Hexosaminidase and beta-glucuronidase activity at 02.00, 04.00 and 05.50 h (values pooled for these times before lights on) were significantly elevated compared to enzyme activity at 06.15 and 08.00 h (pooled values after lights on), suggesting a fall in activity associated with lights on. Hypogonadism was induced in female Syrian hamsters by exposure to a short p

Oscillations in the alpha and beta band (<35 Hz) show characteristic spatiotemporal patterns during sensorimotor processing. Whereas event-related desynchronization (ERD) during motor preparation, execution, and imagery can be seen as a correlate of an activated cortical area, event-related synchronization (ERS) of frequency components between 10 and 13 Hz may represent a deactivated cortical area or inhibited cortical network, at least under certain conditions. Induced beta rhythms (13-35 Hz, beta ERS) can be found in sensorimotor areas following both voluntary movement and somatosensory stim…

Atrial premature beats seldom require an antiarrhythmic treatment; reassurance and suppression of coffee, alcohol, and tobacco generally suffice. Acute atrial fibrillation is best treated by electrical cardioversion if it induces acute cardiovascular decompensation. If it is not poorly tolerated, the arrhythmia may be treated with digitalis at doses sufficient to keep the ventricular response rate at 70-90/min. This therapy may restore sinus rhythm, but conversion to sinus rhythm often requires the combined use of digitalis with a beta-blocker or class I antiarrhythmic drug (quinidine, disopyr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Resting heart rate is an independent risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with heart failure. The main objectives are to discuss the prognosis of heart rate, its association with coronary atherosclerosis, and the modalities of control of the heart rate in sinus rhythm and in the rhythm of atrial fibrillation in patients with chronic heart failure.
RECENT FINDINGS: As a therapeutic option for control heart rate, medications such as beta-blockers, digoxin, and finally ivabradine have been studied. Non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are

A disturbed sleep-wake rhythm is common in Alzheimer disease (AD) patients and correlated with decreased melatonin levels and a disrupted circadian melatonin rhythm. Melatonin levels in the cerebrospinal fluid are decreased during the progression of AD neuropathology (as determined by the Braak stages), already in cognitively intact subjects with the earliest AD neuropathology (Braak stages I-II) (preclinical AD). To investigate the molecular mechanisms behind the decreased melatonin levels, we measured monoamines and mRNA levels of enzymes of the melatonin synthesis and its noradrenergic regu

The diagnosis of supraventricular tachycardia has become much more important with the advent of radiofrequency ablation. This is usually best done at presentation in an acute setting. A 12-lead electrocardiogram should be a routine aid in making the diagnosis. A continuous rhythm strip must be obtained during administration of adenosine and at the termination of tachycardia. Most recent treatment guidelines would include adenosine as first-line therapy. If adenosine fails to restore normal sinus rhythm, diltiazem or a beta blocker should then be considered. If there is significant heart failur

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), triggers neurodegenerative changes in the spinal cord, and simultaneously alters oscillatory manifestations of motor cortex. However, these disturbances may not be limited to motor areas and other parts such as hippocampus, which is vital in the neurogenesis and cognitive function, may be affected in the neurogenic and oscillatory manners. Addressing this remarkable complication of SCI, we evaluated the hippocampal neurogenesis and rhythms through acute phase of SCI. In the present study, we used 40 male rats (Sham.W1 = 10, SCI.W1 = 10, Sham.W2 = 10, SCI.W2 = 10), and
