Approach bias modification in inpatient psychiatric smokers.

Drug-related automatic approach tendencies contribute to the development and maintenance of addictive behavior. The present study investigated whether a nicotine-related approach bias can be modified in smokers undergoing inpatient psychiatric treatment by using a novel training variant of the nicotine Approach-Avoidance-Task (AAT). Additionally, we assessed whether the AAT-training would affect smoking behavior. Inpatient smokers were randomly assigned to either an AAT-training or a sham-training condition. In the AAT-training condition, smokers were indirectly instructed to make avoidance mo…

Threat-related attentional bias in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Attentional bias (AB) modification treatment targeting general or social anxiety has been recently highlighted as a potential novel approach for the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN). The purpose of this study was to examine threat-related AB in patients with ANand healthy control participants (HC) and the relationship between AB and eating disorder and other psychopathology. METHOD: Forty-nine female outpatients with AN or Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, Anorexia Type (EDNOS-AN), and 44 female HC completed a dot-probe task with threat words and a range of self-report mea…

Attention bias modification for reducing speech anxiety.

The mechanisms mediating the anxiolytic effects of attention bias modification (ABM) remain unclear. Accordingly, we randomly assigned speech-anxious subjects to receive four sessions of one of three training conditions: ABM, inverse ABM, and control. In the ABM condition, subjects viewed pairs of photographs of models displaying facial expressions of disgust and joy on a computer screen. Probes always replaced the positive face, and subjects pushed a button to indicate the identity of the probe (E or F) as rapidly as possible. In the inverse condition, the probes always replaced the negative …

When do children exhibit a "yes" bias?

This study investigated whether one hundred and thirty-five 3- to 6-year-old children exhibit a yes bias to various yes-no questions and whether their knowledge status affects the production of a yes bias. Three-year-olds exhibited a yes bias to all yes-no questions such as preference-object and knowledge-object questions pertaining to objects, and knowledge-face questions pertaining to facial expressions. Four-year-olds tended to say "yes" only to knowledge-object questions. Five-year-olds did not show any strong response tendency. Six-year-olds exhibited a nay-saying bias to knowledge-face q…

Measuring attentional bias to peripheral facial deformities.

OBJECTIVES: Introduce a novel method for objectively evaluating attentional bias to peripheral facial deformities using an established metric of attention. METHODS: The SMI eye-tracker system (SensoMotoric Inc., Boston, MA) was used to record the eye movement patterns, called scanpaths, of eight naïve observers gazing at pictures of faces with or without peripheral surgical deformities. The scanpaths of observers gazing on those novel faces were compared, and the fixation durations for different facial regions were compared between faces. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differe…

Memory bias against threat in social phobia.

OBJECTIVES: The present study examined whether social phobia is an anxiety disorder associated with a memory bias toward threat. DESIGN: Social phobic (N = 16) and non-anxious (N = 17) individuals were compared on their recall of evaluative threat and neutral prose passage content. METHOD: Participants were presented with two evaluative threat and two neutral prose passages and completed an immediate free recall task after each trial. RESULTS: Contrary to expectation, individuals with social phobia recalled a smaller percentage of units from the evaluative threat passages than non-anxious i…

Bias mitigation in matched observational studies with continuous treatments: calipered non-bipartite matching and bias-corrected estimation and inference.

In matched observational studies with continuous treatments, individuals with different treatment doses but the same or similar covariate values are paired for causal inference. While inexact covariate matching (i.e., covariate imbalance after matching) is common in practice, previous matched studies with continuous treatments have often overlooked this issue as long as post-matching covariate balance meets certain criteria. Through re-analyzing a matched observational study on the effect of social distancing on COVID-19 case counts, we show that this routine practice can introduce severe bias…

Sleep Quality, Not Sleep Duration, Is Independently Associated with Internalized Weight Bias: The Greek Lifestyle and Obesity-Related Bias Survey.

Internalized weight bias-the self-directed endorsement of weight-related stereotypes-has emerged as a psychologically potent correlate of health outcomes in individuals with overweight and obesity, yet its relationship with sleep remains largely unexplored. In a cross-sectional manner, 495 Greek adults with a history of overweight/obesity were assessed regarding sleep quality and duration, internalized weight bias (Modified Weight Bias Internalization Scale; WBIS-M), and expressed anti-fat attitudes (Anti-Fat Attitudes Questionnaire, AFA: Dislike, Fear of Fat, Willpower). Insomnia prevalence, …

Prospective registration, bias risk and outcome-reporting bias in randomised clinical trials of traditional Chinese medicine: an empirical methodological study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) should be registered in a publicly accessible international trial register and report on all outcomes. We systematically assessed and evaluated TCM trials in registries with their subsequent publications. OBJECTIVE: To describe the characteristics of TCM trials, estimate bias risk and outcome-reporting bias in clinical trials. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: Fifteen trial registries were searched from their inception to July 2012 to identify randomised trials on TCM including Chinese herbs, acupuncture and/or moxibustion, cu…

Codon usage bias and nucleotide bias are not influenced by the 5' flanking but by 3' and intronic region composition in SCID-associated genes.

Compositional constraints, selectional and mutational forces, nucleotide skews, RNA folding free energy, gene expression, protein properties, and differential expression are a few attributes that define the molecular signatures of any gene. The absence of information regarding these attributes for genes associated with severe combined immunodeficiency disorder (SCID) prompted us to take up this study. The compositional bias influenced codon bias. Overall percent T composition is the lowest among all nucleotides. However, its distribution varies markedly across different codon positions and is …

Exploring pain sensitivity changes after acceptance and attention bias modification trainings: preliminary evidence on fear of pain and attention bias.

Cognitive trainings for pain are suggested as promising interventions targeting core mechanisms related to pain. However, their efficacy varies greatly, and the factors that moderate training efficacy are poorly understood. Thus, this study investigated how individual characteristics influence the effectiveness of two commonly used cognitive trainings, attention bias modification (ABM) and acceptance training, in modulating experimental pain. Eighty healthy females attended two sessions of either pain acceptance training or pain ABM training. Each participant underwent one active training sess…

Late UP-state bias in cortico-amygdalar coordination.

Neocortical slow oscillations temporally organize neuronal activity across distributed brain regions, but the coordination of basolateral am … ivity remains poorly understood. We show that BLA neuronal activity is sparse and probabilistically biased toward the late phase of neocortical UP states rather than uniformly distributed throughout the UP period. BLA activity is further characterized by temporally anticorrelated changes in excitatory and inhibitory conductances and locally organized c …

Addressing algorithmic bias in lung cancer screening eligibility.

BACKGROUND: The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) lung cancer screening eligibility guidelines and proposed risk models have been developed using data predominantly from White populations. Studies show that these eligibility strategies perform inconsistently across racially diverse populations, suggesting evidence of algorithmic bias. We assessed several lung cancer screening eligibility strategies and explored how algorithmic bias can be resolved to improve equity in eligibility. METHODS: Using the Southern Community Cohort Study, a large US study of predominantly Black/African Amer…

Delphi-based consensus studies: persistent challenges of bias.

Delphi methodology plays an important role in consensus development in areas where evidence is limited, ambiguous, or heterogeneous. However, the process remains inherently vulnerable to cognitive and methodological biases involving principal investigators, expert panellists, and other stakeholders. Recognising and proactively addressing these biases is essential to improve the rigour, transparency, and credibility of Delphi-based consensus research. Future efforts should focus on developing structured frameworks for transparent reporting and systematic implementation of bias mitigation strate…

Does Disability Bias Exist in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery?

BACKGROUND: Implicit bias among health care providers can influence clinical decision-making and patient outcomes. These unconscious attitudes may be subtly shaping health care interactions and priorities in orthopaedics for complex care delivery in neuromuscular patients. This study assessed implicit disability bias among pediatric orthopaedic providers and examined whether factors such as race, gender, education level, medical specialty, and prior experience working with individuals with disabilities influenced bias levels. METHODS: Members of a national pediatric orthopaedic organization w…

Assessing Biological Mortality Bias From Deciduous Tooth Emergence.

OBJECTIVES: Traits found in a skeletal sample are frequently used to infer qualities of the living population from which the skeletons were drawn. However, traits observed in a mortality sample may exhibit biological mortality bias in that they may not accurately represent the same traits in the living sample. The purpose of this research was to assess biological mortality bias in deciduous tooth emergence, a trait that is used to estimate chronological age in skeletal samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on clinical tooth emergence were collected from longitudinal studies of Javanese, Guatem…
