Complementing Western Bioethics: Nishida Kitarō's Relational Ontology and the Future of Brain Organoid Research.

This paper explores the complementarity of Nishida Kitarō's relational ontology with Western bioethics in addressing novel moral dilemmas arising from advanced neural technologies, including brain organoids, human-animal chimeras, and biocomputational systems. Nishida's philosophy transcends the subject-object dichotomy by emphasizing the interconnectedness and co-creative nature of all beings, thereby reframing traditional questions of moral status, personhood, and consent. We examine recent scientific advances and policy debates to demonstrate that Nishida's approach not only enriches ethica…

SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination in India: Considerations of Hesitancy and Bioethics in Global Health.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide mass vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, while having been the most critical action in combating further waves of COVID-19, was initially fraught with multiple infrastructural and socio-cultural challenges. Vaccine hesitancy, a phenomenon of doubt over the vaccines' claimed efficacy and/or safety amidst access to vaccination, emerged as a major challenge for global health, despite approval and regular post-marketing surveillance by major regulatory bodies. METHODS: We reviewed the literature related to vaccine hesitancy in India published until November 14, 2021 using rele

Conjugal visits and conception: Bioethical and medico-legal challenges in correctional settings.

The recent introduction in Italy of unsupervised conjugal visits for prisoners is part of a broader trend that has been well-established across numerous European countries. This provision is grounded in the respect for constitutional rights and the principles set out by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which underscores the centrality of private and family life even for incarcerated individuals. This development raises significant bioethical and medico-legal challenges, which have yet to be fully explored, particularly regarding conception during conjugal visits. The present article

Extremely premature birth bioethical decision-making supported by dialogics and pragmatism.

Moral values in healthcare range widely between interest groups and are principally subjective. Disagreements diminish dialogue and marginalize alternative viewpoints. Extremely premature births exemplify how discord becomes unproductive when conflicts of interest, cultural misunderstanding, constrained evidence review, and peculiar hierarchy compete without the balance of objective standards of reason. Accepting uncertainty, distributing risk fairly, and humbly acknowledging therapeutic limits are honorable traits, not relativism, and especially crucial in our world of constrained resources.

Opt-in Vs. Opt-out of Organ Donation in Scotland: Bioethical analysis.

This paper looks at the ethics of opt-in vs. opt-out of organ donation as Scotland has transitioned its systems to promote greater organ availability. We first analyse studies that compare the donation rates in other regions due to such a system switch and find that organ increase is inconclusive and modest at best. This is due to a lack of explicit opt-out choices resulting in greater resistance and family override unless there are infrastructures and greater awareness to support such change. The paper then looks at the difference between informed consent of the opt-in vs. presumed consent in

The Surgeon and the Algorithm: Why the Vatican's Bioethical Blueprint Is Essential for Modern Surgical Practice.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI), intraoperative predictive analytics, and automated tracking platforms within modern surgical workflows presents emerging ethical challenges regarding patient autonomy, transparency, and data governance. This editorial explores how the recent Papal Encyclical Magnifica Humanitas provides a human-centered bioethical blueprint for contemporary surgical practice. By emphasizing the intrinsic dignity of the patient, this framework offers guidance against reducing individuals to standardized data metrics. The essay further examines concerns surr

Instrumentalized Bodies, Moralized Pregnancy : A Feminist Bioethical Comparison of China and the United States.

This paper compares reproductive governance in China and the United States from a feminist bioethical perspective, drawing on theories of relational autonomy and reproductive justice. In China, whether restricting or encouraging births, the state treats women's reproductive capacity as a demographic resource and restructures family relationships into channels of policy enforcement, eroding the relational foundations of women's autonomy. In restrictive American states after the Dobbs decision, a particular moral position on foetal life is encoded into law, overriding medical judgment and isolat

Intranasal Drug Delivery in Neuropharmacology: Advances in Brain-Targeted Therapies and Bioethical Challenges.

Intranasal drug delivery represents a transformative "backdoor" to the brain, bypassing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) that bars 98% of small molecules and nearly all large biopharmaceuticals. By harnessing the unique anatomy of the olfactory and trigeminal nerves, therapeutics can travel directly from the nasal cavity to the central nervous system, achieving therapeutic concentrations without the systemic toxicity of traditional routes. Clinical and preclinical evidence highlight the efficacy of intranasal insulin (INI) in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD) and delirium, with studies showing si

Genome Editing in Medicine: A Scoping Review of Ethical, Bioethical, and Medico-Legal Implications.

Genome editing, prominently led by the revolutionary CRISPR-Cas9 technology, is a powerful tool with significant applications in diverse fields, particularly in medicine and agriculture. It empowers scientists with the ability to effect precise genetic modifications, thereby potentially paving the way for advanced treatments for genetic disorders such as Huntington's disease, hemophilia, and cystic fibrosis. Yet, the significant capabilities of this technology also brings to the fore a myriad of intricate bioethical, legal, and regulatory dilemmas. In light of these complexities, this article

The "gray zone" in pediatric end-of-life care: bioethical and medico-legal reflections.

Palliative care for children with incurable diseases represents one of the most complex challenges in pediatric medicine. It requires a delicate balance between continuing potentially ineffective therapies and ensuring comfort and dignity during the terminal phase. Decisions involve both the family and the medical team, with a particular focus on the "gray zone," where prognostic uncertainty makes it difficult to determine the most ethical course of action. According to the WHO, palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for both the child and their family, addressing not only physica

Respect for bioethical principles and human rights in prisons: a systematic review on the state of the art.

BACKGROUND: Respect for human rights and bioethical principles in prisons is a crucial aspect of society and is proportional to the well-being of the general population. To date, these ethical principles have been lacking in prisons and prisoners are victims of abuse with strong repercussions on their physical and mental health. METHODS: A systematic review was performed, through a MESH of the following words (bioethics) AND (prison), (ethics) AND (prison), (bioethics) AND (jail), (ethics) AND (jail), (bioethics) AND (penitentiary), (ethics) AND (penitentiary), (prison) AND (human rights). The Problem Is Not (Merely) Mass Incarceration: Incarceration as a Bioethical Crisis and Abolition as a Moral Obligation.

Mass incarceration is an ethical crisis. Yet it is not only the magnitude of the system that is troubling. Mass incarceration has been created and sustained by racism, classism, and ableism, and the problems of the criminal legal system will not be solved without meaningfully intervening upon these forms of oppression. Beyond that, incarceration itself-whether of one person or 2 million-represents a moral failing. To punish and control, rather than invest in community and healing, is antithetical to the values of the field of bioethics. This commentary, which responds to the article "Fifty Yea…

[Bioethical reflections on ill-considered care due to an early diagnosis of Alzheimer disease].

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer disease raises important bioethical issues. In the interval between early disease detection and symptom onset, there is a time in which the patient's autonomy, privacy, and dignity may be undermined by certain healthcare measures or by family care and support. These measures may eventually turn patients into an object of care, preventing them from accepting the disease, developing an identity, and rearranging their living spaces. Every effort should be made to ensure that care does not become compassionate harassment or an invasive act, annulling the patient's auto
