We report the first confirmed case of a human being bitten by the parasitic forest fly Hippobosca equina (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) Linnaeus, in Slovakia. The incident involved atypically aggressive behaviour of the fly toward the human host and suggests a potentially underestimated health risk for humans. A single specimen of H. equina responsible for the bite was identified and subjected to molecular analyses to assess the presence of zoonotic pathogens. DNA of Bartonella schoenbuchensis (Hyphomicrobiales: Bartonellaceae) Dehio et al. was detected in the collected specimen. This case demonstra

We herein review and analyze the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of a severe infection caused by a human bite. A 68-year-old man was bitten on the forearm by a 3-year-old child. Rapid progression of infection, severe local and systemic poisoning, and diverse clinical manifestations were observed at presentation. Based on the medical history, physical signs, imaging examinations (X-ray films, color Doppler ultrasound, and computed tomography), laboratory examinations, and multidisciplinary consultation, the patient was diagnosed with gas gangrene or gas gangrene-like changes. Twenty-four hour

OBJECTIVE: Bite mark analysis is used for comparison between bite marks on a bitten object and the suspects' teeth. However, if it is not possible to obtain a correct match, it is important to recover salivary DNA. Previous studies have tried to isolate human nuclear DNA from bitten foods but were not completely successful. In the present work, we studied the efficiency of human nuclear and mitochondrial DNA isolation from bite marks in cheese, a donut and an apple.
DESIGN: Using a double swab technique and silica-based DNA extraction kit, nuclear and mitochondrial DNA were isolated. Human ho

Traumatic auricular amputation due to human bite is not a common event. Bite wounds are always considered to be complex injuries contaminated with unique poly-microbial inoculum. Human bites are as serious as animal bites because they induce a higher incidence of infectious complications. In bite wounds to the face, infectious complications can create more difficulties than the initial tissue damage itself for the task of restoring an esthetic appearance. In this case report a young male patient had ear lobule injury on interpersonal violence and amputation of ear lobule results. Due to delay

Filth-feeding and breeding, non-biting synanthropic flies have been incriminated in the dissemination of human enteropathogens in the environment. This study determined the species of non-biting synanthropic flies associated with four filthy sites in Ilishan, Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, and assessed their potentials for mechanical transmission of human intestinal parasites. 7190 flies identified as Musca domestica (33.94%), Chrysomya megacephala (26.01%), Musca sorbens (23.23%), Lucilia cuprina (8.76%), Calliphora vicina (4.59%), Sarcophaga sp. (2.78%) and Fannia scalaris (0.70%) were exami

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Olfactory cues play an important role in the attraction of major disease vectors towards their host. Hence we intend to investigate the contribution of selected parts of the human host on the behavioural biting preference of Culex quinquefasciatus.
METHODS: Two volunteers were trained to collect host seeking female mosquitoes landing to feed on different parts of the lower limbs. The Cx. quinquefasciatus were collected in paper cups with the aid of a flash-light and aspirator. Each paper cup was labeled to represent the selected parts where the mosquitoes were collect

Distribution of biting sites on the human body by the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) was investigated near a source of mosquitoes in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Eight adult male volunteers (2 teams x 2 pairs of subjects) conducted human bait collections while seated on camp chairs in the open-air, wearing only short trousers (no shirt, socks or shoes). Mosquito collections during 18.30-22.30 hours on five consecutive nights in April 1998 yielded a total of 679 An. arabiensis females biting subjects with or without their ankles and feet treated with

INTRODUCTION: Human bite marks are often sustained during sexual, domestic or child abuse. Currently, analysis of these marks involves digital photography techniques along with an expert forensic odontologist opinion. Photographs often focus closely on the bite mark and give little context to the anatomical location of the injury. Due to variation in camera models and expertise of the photographer, photograph quality can affect its interpretation. Additionally, it can sometimes be days between injury and examination, allowing the injury pattern and colour to alter, making it harder to analyse.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are one of the most important vectors of infectious disease pathogens in Europe, posing threats to human health. However, human exposure to tick bites and associated factors remains poorly documented, despite its importance to better mitigate the risk of tick-borne diseases. Current participatory datasets report information from individuals being bitten by ticks, while information on exposed but non-bitten individuals is scarce. Here, by collecting data on exposed individuals from a nationwide participatory surveillance cohort in France, we assessed the risk of self-reporting

BACKGROUND: Malaria and dengue fever are transmitted by female mosquitoes of the Anopheles and Aedes genera, respectively. These diseases are among the most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, with dengue fever posing an increasingly significant threat. In this context, studying the species diversity of vectors, as well as their bionomics, including their ecological and behavioral traits, is essential for a better understanding of transmission dynamics, and for guiding appropriate vector control strategies. This study aims to characterize the species diversity and human bite rates of malaria and

Dog bites are a common cause of injury worldwide and constitute a major public health challenge. In addition to mechanical trauma, they inoculate wounds with complex polymicrobial communities derived from the canine oral microbiota and, in rabies-endemic regions, may transmit rabies virus (RABV), leading to clinical outcomes ranging from localized wound infection to fulminant systemic disease and fatal encephalitis. This review summarizes recent advances in the microbiological profiles, pathogenic mechanisms, and systemic consequences of dog bite-associated infections in humans, integrating ev

BACKGROUND: Molecular mimicry contributes to the development of unwanted responses to self-antigens. Autoimmune phenomena have been observed in diseases caused by Aedes aegypti-transmitted arboviruses, but the occurrence of mimicry between salivary and human proteins has been unexplored.
METHODS: We used bioinformatic tools to determine if peptides from Aedes aegypti salivary proteins were present in the human proteome. We further characterized the potential of shared sequences to induce immunity by analyzing their predicted binding to MHC molecules and their occurrence in peptides from the I

Deep bite is a malocclusion phenotype, defined as the misalignment in the vertical dimension of teeth and jaws and characterized by excessive overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. Numerous factors, including genetics, environmental factors, and behavioral ones, might contribute to deep bite. In this study, we discuss the current clinical treatment strategies for deep bite, summarize the already published findings of genetic analysis associated with this complex phenotype, and their constraints. Finally, we propose a comprehensive roadmap to facilitate investigations for

INTRODUCTION: Dog bites continue to be a serious public health issue due to their association with the transmission of rabies virus. In Kenya, there are no studies estimating dog-bite incidence. Annual mortalities resulting from dog-mediated rabies are estimated at 523 (95% confidence interval 134-1100). The main objective of this study was to assess major risk factors associated with dog bites in Kitui South subcounty, Kenya, between 2017 and 2021.
METHODS: We recruited 387 dog-bite patients (cases) and 387 non-bite patients (controls) for the case-control study from the Mutomo Mission Hospi

Tick-borne diseases have increased significantly in Europe and Spain in recent years. One strategy explored for tick surveillance and control is the study of the microbiota. The focus is on understanding the relationships between pathogens and endosymbionts within the microbiota and how these relationships can alter these arthropods' vectorial capacity. Thus, it is pivotal to depict the bacterial communities composing the microbiota of ticks present in specific territories. This work aimed to describe the microbiota present in 29 adult individuals of 5 tick species collected from 4 provinces o
