Water hardness determines 226Ra uptake in the tropical freshwater mussel.

Chemical data for freshwater mussels (Velesunio spp.) and water from 15 sampling sites in the Alligator Rivers Region and Rum Jungle uranium provinces in tropical Northern Australia were analysed to develop a predictive model of radium-226 (226Ra) bioaccumulation for variable water calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations. Application of the model as a 226Ra screening approach for freshwater mussels in tropical waterbodies potentially impacted by operational or remediated uranium mine sites is discussed in relation to Mudginberri Billabong, located approximately 12 km downstream of Range

Glucose release in mantle tissue of Mytilus: regulation by calcium ions.

Glucose release activity in mantle tissue of Mytilus galloprovincialis was studied. Mantle tissue shows a basal glucose releasing activity. The external Ca2+ absence increases 2 to 3-fold the basal glucose release, and when A23187 (10 microM) was simultaneously present the release doubled that obtained in Ca2(+)-absence. EGTA (2 mM), chlorpromazine (200 microM) and lanthanum (3 mM) decreased the glucose release promoted by external Ca2+ absence. This and other data suggest that glucose release activity in mantle tissue might be controlled by Ca2+ ions.

[Remineralization and burial of sedimentary organic carbon in filter-feeding bivalve aquaculture areas: Mechanisms and controversies.].

Filter-feeding bivalve aquaculture enhances the transport of particulate organic carbon (POC) to the seafloor through filtration, selective feeding, and biodeposition, thereby altering the sources, fluxes, and reactivity of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC). However, aquaculture-induced organic carbon inputs are characterized by "high input, high reactivity, and high uncertainty". After entering the sediment, a fraction is returned to the water column through microbial remineralization, resuspension, and lateral transport, whereas another fraction is stabilized through rapid burial, mineral pro

Epitranscriptomic erasers in bivalves: Evolutionary divergence and species-specific transcriptional plasticity of the ALKBH family under acute thermal stress.

The AlkB homolog (ALKBH) family of Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases mediates nucleic acid demethylation, thereby governing RNA metabolism and genomic stability. Despite their pivotal roles in epitranscriptomic regulation across vertebrates, the evolutionary dynamics and functional significance of ALKBH proteins in bivalve mollusks remain largely unexplored. Here, we present a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of 210 ALKBH genes identified across 35 bivalve species. Our analyses reveal a distinct evolutionary trajectory characterized by the lineage-specific loss of ALKBH4 and the

Swimming behavior characteristics of Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) D-shaped larvae exposed to environmental stressors.

This study employed video analysis techniques to investigate the swimming behavior of D-shaped larvae of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum). The effects of environmental stressors on the growth, development, and swimming behavior of larvae were evaluated, including elevated temperature, hypoxia, and hydrogen sulfide, as well as their specific combinations: a binary combination (elevated temperature and hypoxia) and a ternary combination (elevated temperature, hypoxia, and hydrogen sulfide). The relationship between developmental abnormalities and aberrant larval behavior was also analyz

Toxicological effects of acute and subacute perfluorooctane sulfonic acid exposure on the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), a persistent and bioaccumulative per-and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), is widely distributed in aquatic environments and is known for its toxic effects. This study investigated the toxicological mechanisms of PFOS in the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus under acute and subacute exposure scenarios, with particular emphasis on concentration-dependent and organ-specific responses in gills and digestive glands (DGs). Clams were exposed to nominal PFOS concentrations under acute conditions (1-100 µg/ml for 5 days) and subacute conditions (1, 10, and 20 µg/ml fo

Berberine, a Natural Compound That Demonstrates Antiviral Effects Against Ostreid Herpesvirus 1 Infection in Anadara broughtonii.

Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) infection is the primary viral disease responsible for large-scale mortality in bivalve mollusks worldwide, and effective strategies to control the outbreaks of this disease are still lacking. Berberine (BBR), a plant-derived alkaloid, has demonstrated antiviral activity against various vertebrate viruses, while its potential antiviral effects on molluscan herpesviruses remain to be fully elucidated. Therefore, the present study sought to investigate the potential of berberine hydrochloride (BBH) against OsHV-1 infection in blood clams (Anadara broughtonii). The

Digital PCR (dPCR) vs. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) approaches for quantification of two Perkinsus species within clam tissue samples.

The parasite Perkinsus olseni (Perkinsea, Alveolata), the etiological agent of Perkinsosis, infects a wide range of bivalves and gastropods, including clams, particularly in Europe. This parasite coexists in sympatry with another Perkinsus species, P. chesapeaki, which, as opposed to P. olseni, has not been directly associated to mortality events. Accurate detection and quantification of Perkinsus infections, even at low infection intensities, are crucial for monitoring clam population health and assessing risks associated with emerging diseases. In this study, we compared molecular methodolog

Hydrogen sulfide mitigates the immunotoxicity and neurotoxicity induced by cadmium in Tegillarca granosa.

The blood clam Tegilarca granosa is an economically important shellfish in Asia. The complex living environment often exposes the clams to cadmium (Cd) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). H2S is well-known for its toxic effects, however, it is still unclear whether it can participate in regulating the heavy metal adaptation in clams. Here, we subjected T. granosa to chronic Cd stress (50 μg/L, 14 days) to explore their physiological and molecular response patterns under the addition of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mM H2S. The results indicated that the Cd stress induced the immune-toxicity and neurotoxicity in t

Bioaccumulation and toxicity of imatinib, cyclophosphamide and its transformation product carboxyphosphamide in the freshwater mussel Elliptio complanata.

Pharmaceutical compounds primarily enter the environment through wastewater treatment plants, where they are not completely removed. Antineoplastic drugs, such as cyclophosphamide and imatinib, are particularly concerning due to their cytotoxic effects at low concentrations. The purpose of this study was to determine the bioavailability and toxicity of these 2 drugs to freshwater mussels, known to thrive in urban areas. Freshwater mussels Elliptio complanata were exposed to increasing concentrations (4, 20, and 100 µgL− 1) of cyclophosphamide and imatinib for 96 h at 15 °C. Although a low bioa

Methodologies for Detoxifying Bivalves from Marine Paralytic Shellfish Toxins.

The marine environment emerges as a key provider of food and sustainable products. However, these benefits are accompanied by numerous challenges owing to harmful algal blooms (HAB) and their associated biotoxins, which accumulate in organisms, like bivalves, threatening seafood quality. Among the various biotoxins, paralytic shellfish toxins (PST), the causative agents of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), are among the most potent, lethal, and frequently reported instances of human intoxication. Removing PST from marine system is particularly challenging because of their hydrophilicity, su

Carbamoylase-based impedimetric electronic tongue for rapid detection of paralytic shellfish toxins.

Phytotoxins produced by marine microalgae, such as paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), can accumulate in bivalve molluscs, representing a human health concern due to the life-threatening symptoms they cause. To avoid the commercialization of contaminated bivalves, monitoring programs were established in the EU. The purpose of this work is the implementation of a PST transforming enzyme-carbamoylase-in an impedimetric test for rapid simultaneous detection of several carbamate and N-sulfocarbamoyl PSTs. Carbamoylase hydrolyses carbamate and sulfocarbamoyl toxins, which may account for up to 90% o

Effects of the toxic dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum and its yessotoxins on the survival and feed ingestion of Argopecten purpuratus veliger larvae.

The effects of yessotoxins (YTXs) produced by the dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum in the early stages of bivalves have not been studied in detail. The present study evaluates the effects of P. reticulatum and YTXs on the survival and feed ingestion of veliger larvae of Argopecten purpuratus. Larvae were 96 h-exposed to 500, 1000 and 2000 P. reticulatum cells mL-1, and their equivalent YTX extract was prepared in methanol. Results show a survival mean of 82 % at the highest density of dinoflagellate, and 38 % for larvae with the highest amount of YTX extract. Feed ingestion is reduced

The mud-dwelling clam Meretrix petechialis secretes endogenously synthesized erythromycin.

Although lacking an adaptive immune system and often living in habitats with dense and diverse bacterial populations, marine invertebrates thrive in the presence of potentially challenging microbial pathogens. However, the mechanisms underlying this resistance remain largely unexplored and promise to reveal novel strategies of microbial resistance. Here, we provide evidence that a mud-dwelling clam, Meretrix petechialis, synthesizes, stores, and secretes the antibiotic erythromycin. Effect of light on the trematode Himasthla elongata: from cercarial behaviour to infection success.

The cockle Cerastoderma edule, a socioeconomically important bivalve of the northeast Atlantic, is host to several trematodes, including Himasthla elongata. In the life cycle of this trematode, cercariae (free-living stages) emerge from the first intermediate host, a snail, to infect cockles as second intermediate hosts. During their lifespan (less than 2 d), cercariae must ensure successful host-to-host transmission via the surrounding water and therefore are exposed to and impacted by different environmental conditions, including abiotic factors. Given that the light:dark cycle is one of the

Untargeted Metabolomics Approach for the Discovery of Environment-Related Pyran-2-ones Chemodiversity in a Marine-Sourced Penicillium restrictum.

Very little is known about chemical interactions between fungi and their mollusc host within marine environments. Here, we investigated the metabolome of a Penicillium restrictum MMS417 strain isolated from the blue mussel Mytilus edulis collected on the Loire estuary, France. Following the OSMAC approach with the use of 14 culture media, the effect of salinity and of a mussel-derived medium on the metabolic expression were analysed using HPLC-UV/DAD-HRMS/MS. An untargeted metabolomics study was performed using principal component analysis (PCA), orthogonal projection to latent structure discr
