Contact Lenses for Color Blindness.

Color vision deficiency (color blindness) is an inherited genetic ocular disorder. While no cure for this disorder currently exists, several methods can be used to increase the color perception of those affected. One such method is the use of color filtering glasses which are based on Bragg filters. While these glasses are effective, they are high cost, bulky, and incompatible with other vision correction eyeglasses. In this work, a rhodamine derivative is incorporated in commercial contact lenses to filter out the specific wavelength bands (≈545-575 nm) to correct color vision blindness. The …

Epidemiology of blindness in children.

An estimated 1.4 million of the world's children are blind. A blind child is more likely to live in socioeconomic deprivation, to be more frequently hospitalised during childhood and to die in childhood than a child not living with blindness. This update of a previous review on childhood visual impairment focuses on emerging therapies for children with severe visual disability (severe visual impairment and blindness or SVI/BL).For children in higher income countries, cerebral visual impairment and optic nerve anomalies remain the most common causes of SVI/BL, while retinopathy of prematurity (…

Ocular cysticercosis with intermittent blindness.

We report this peculiar case of ocular cysticercosis with intermittent blindness which is never reported to our knowledge. This case highlights use of Ultrasound for examination of the posterior segment of eye globe. In limited facilities Ultrasound is the main modality to reach the diagnosis. We also wish to enforce the point that in endemic regions and in young population primary cysticercosis and its complications must be kept in differentials of cystic mass or calcified mass, as in this case, we have seen both the stages of cysticercosis progression.

Periocular necrotizing fasciitis causing blindness.

IMPORTANCE: Periocular necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but potentially devastating disease, accompanied by high rates of morbidity and mortality. OBSERVATIONS: We report 5 cases of periocular necrotizing fasciitis resulting in severe vision loss, 3 of which required exenteration to contain the disease and only 1 of which recovered vision. Three cases were caused by group A streptococcus; 1, by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; and 1, by Streptococcus anginosus constellatus. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Providers should maintain a high clinical suspicion for necrotizing fasciitis and

Blindness in adolescents in Israel.

Adolescents with blindness or visual impairment, in order to go through the trying time of adolescence, require extra strength to overcome their disability. This short communication looks at prevalence data for blindness in children and adolescents that range from about 3 per 10,000 children in developed countries (60 blind children per million total population) to 15 per 10,000 in the poorest countries (600 blind children per million total population). Data from the year 2000 in Israel showed a total of 18,509 persons with blindness registered in Israel, including 168 children between the age…

Corneal blindness: a global perspective.

Diseases affecting the cornea are a major cause of blindness worldwide, second only to cataract in overall importance. The epidemiology of corneal blindness is complicated and encompasses a wide variety of infectious and inflammatory eye diseses that cause corneal scarring, which ultimately leads to functional blindness. In addition, the prevalence of corneal disease varies from country to country and even from one population to another. While cataract is responsible for nearly 20 million of the 45 million blind people in the world, the next major cause is trachoma which blinds 4.9 million ind…

Reversible cortical blindness in preeclampsia.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical course and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in a 28-year-old woman with preeclampsia and reversible cortical blindness. DESIGN: Interventional case report. METHODS: The patient presented at the 37th week of pregnancy with headache and hypertension. The next day, her visual acuity decreased to light perception in both eyes. After emergent cesarean section, examination revealed reactive pupils and normal fundi. RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed areas of increased signal in both occipital lobes. One month later, at which time the p…

[Cortical blindness following coronary angiography].

Cortical blindness has been occasionally reported as a complication after cerebral angiography, but is rare after coronary angiography. The contrast agent is believed to be responsible for the sudden development of blindness. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, it appears that the contrast agent disrupts the blood brain barrier, mostly in the occipital areas. We report a 77-year-old man who suddenly developed transient, bilateral cortical blindness 4 hours after coronary angiography. Using contrast enhancement, the CT scan showed typical, symmetrical involvement of both occipital lobes. T…

Blindness associated with midfacial fractures.

PURPOSE: This study assessed the frequency of blindness associated with midfacial fractures and correlated this with the fracture pattern. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 49 patients admitted with midfacial fractures from January 1995 to March 1997 was performed to determine the presence of posttraumatic blindness. The medical and radiological records of the patients with blindness were reviewed for age and sex, cause of the injury, type of facial fracture, type of ocular trauma, and probable cause of the blindness. RESULTS: Ten of the 49 patients lost vision in one eye (20…

Binocular blindness following dynamic cardiomyoplasty.

A 40-year-old man with viral cardiomyopathy underwent uncomplicated dynamic cardiomyoplasty. On the third postoperative day, he was rescued from an 8-hour period of severe cardiogenic shock. Eleven days postoperatively, he was withdrawn and uncooperative, preferring to be left alone. He then complained of total blindness, which persisted to his sudden death on postoperative day 26. Clinical examination revealed no neurological abnormality except for signs consistent with a diagnosis of ischemic optic neuropathy. The optic nerve in the scleral canal is especially vulnerable to hypoperfusion. Bl…

[Corneal blindness in tropical areas].

Corneal disease is the second most common cause of blindness in tropical countries after cataract. It mainly strikes children who are exposed to numerous infectious agents against which they are unprotected due to the absence of basic health care. In high risk groups, the incidence of childhood corneal-related blindness is more than 20 times higher than in developed countries. There are many causes of corneal-related blindness. Endemic trachoma persists in some areas and inflammatory forms can lead to blindness. Eradication requires instillation of antibiotics in the eye, improvement of sanita…
