OBJECTIVES: Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a transfusion-transmissible virus. To obtain data about the prevalence, incidence, the course of B19V infection in blood donors and whether B19V might impair their blood counts, samples from blood donors with B19V infection were investigated.

Sera of 1731 blood donors of the Ulm blood bank were screened for cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibodies. Prevalence of these antibodies was 37%. The seroconversion rate among 1090 anti-CMV-negative blood donors was 13 per thousand per year for the whole donor population over a period of 27 months and depended on age. A study of 1262 city blood donors showed that they are significantly different from the urban population eligible to donate. City blood donors are youthful and live in middleclass suburbs, donating in relation to work. Men predominate (1.3:1) and donate for longer than women. Young women donate blood readily but often discontinue in their late twenties, whereas in the country, women predominate (1.3:1), and continue giving into their forties. A man and his twin sister were found to have two types of circulating red cells. The man had 89% A1 cells of his own and 11% A1B cells derived from his sister. The woman had 12% A1B cells of her own and 88% A1 cells derived from her brother. The two lines of red cells also had different Duffy and Kidd groups. The lymphocyte karyotype in the brother was 68% XY and 32% XX, and that in the sister was 60% XX and 40% XY. The possible mechanisms for producing different proportions of red cells and lymphocytes are discussed.
