Uterine artery application of adenoviral vascular endothelial growth factor A165 (Ad.VEGF-A165) gene therapy increases uterine blood flow and fetal growth in experimental animals with fetal growth restriction (FGR). Whether Ad.VEGF-A165 reduces lifelong cardiovascular disease risk imposed by FGR remains unknown. Here, pregnant guinea pigs fed 70% normal food intake to induce FGR received Ad.VEGF-A165 (1×1010 viral particles, n = 15) or vehicle ( n = 10), delivered to the external surface of the uterine arteries, in midpregnancy. Ad libitum-fed controls received vehicle only ( n = 14). Litter s

Balancing pulmonary and systemic circulations in single ventricle patients with a conduit after Stage 1 palliation is challenging. A transcatheter intervention for excessive pulmonary blood flow would provide benefit. We report a case of a critically ill single ventricle patient with symptoms of excessive pulmonary blood flow after Stage 1 despite maximal medical therapy. The patient underwent percutaneous intraluminal downsizing of the right ventricle to pulmonary artery conduit using a novel application of the Diabolo-covered stent technique, with subsequent clinical improvement. A second ca

Surgery for bleeding portal hypertension has evolved widely in the last decades. The surgical procedures that preserve portal blood flow are the first operative choice for well selected patients. Operative procedures that deprive the portal blood flow to the liver, are most likely to promote deterioration of liver function in the late postoperative period. The operation most frequently performed are the selective shunts (Warren) and the thoraco abdominal devascularization (Sugiura). The best results are obtained in patients with a good liver function that are operated in an elective fashion. N

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic dysphagia, characterised by dysphagia resulting from sarcopenia with decline of skeletal muscles and swallowing-related muscle strength and mass, poses a significant healthcare and economic burden on families and society. Swallowing training (ST) has been proven to improve dysphagia in older people with neurological disorders such as stroke. However, the effects of this training on people with sarcopenic dysphagia are limited. Considering the significant effect of sarcopenia on the pathogenesis of sarcopenic dysphagia, resistance training was incorporated into the conven

PURPOSE: Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) has been found to reduce quadriceps atrophy and weakness after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery. However, the clinical benefit of BFRT as compared to general rehabilitation exercise (GRE) alone remains uncertain. This study aimed to compare the effects of BFRT and GRE on ACL reconstruction rehabilitation through a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Elsevier and Biosis were searched for randomized controlled trials comparing BFRT and GRE following ACL reconstruction. Primary outcomes in

BACKGROUND: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a well-established phenomenon characterized by ultrastructural muscle damage that typically develops following unfamiliar or high-intensity exercise. DOMS manifests with a constellation of symptoms, including muscle tenderness, stiffness, edema, mechanical hyperalgesia, and a reduced range of joint motion. In recent years, the application of blood flow restriction (BFR) has garnered attention for its potential impact on DOMS.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different BFR intensities on biomechanical alterations indu

Brain sparing is an adaptive phenomenon (redistribution of blood flow to the brain) observed in fetuses exposed to chronic hypoxia, who are at risk of intrauterine growth restriction. Here, we assessed the blood flow distribution during the early neonatal period (< 7 days of life) using echocardiography, and evaluated the impact of brain-sparing on postnatal course and neurodevelopmental outcomes. This retrospective study included 42 small-for-gestational age (SGA) infants [further classified into asymmetric SGA (a-SGA, n = 21) and symmetric SGA (s-SGA, n = 21) groups according to their birth

BACKGROUND Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) limits physical activity and quality of life, especially during weight-bearing tasks. Although high-load resistance exercises are recommended for rehabilitation, they may worsen symptoms in pain-sensitive individuals. Low-intensity blood flow restriction (BFR) training has emerged as a potential alternative. However, its effects on functional performance and mechanical properties remain unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial, 41 individuals with PFPS were randomly assigned to either the experimental gro

BACKGROUND: Inadequate long-term outcomes are common following both surgical and non-surgical management of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. Emerging evidence suggests that a bracing protocol may facilitate ligamentous healing; however, a period of immobilisation can induce muscle atrophy. This study aims to investigate the potential benefits of adding blood flow restriction (BFR) training to the conservative treatment of ACL rehabilitation.
METHODS: This is a double-blinded, two-arm randomised clinical trial. Participants in the intervention group will follow an exercise protocol us

LONG TERM OXYGEN THERAPY IN CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASES. Survival of severe chronic respiratory failure with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is improved by long-term oxygen therapy. Other benefits exist for COPD and other causes of chronic respiratory failure. The indications for this restrictive (more 15 hours per day) treatment require measurements of arterial blood gases in adults. Several actors are involved: the specialist for the prescription, the service provider for supplying and maintaining the equipment, the patient and his entourage, the referring doctor to ensure that

Physical inactivity depresses glycemic control, an impairment that can be prevented with exercise. We investigated whether electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) with blood flow restriction (BFR) could similarly prevent the impairments in glycemic control associated with physical inactivity and whether this was effective for attenuating the loss of physical function after inactivity. Thirty-two participants underwent 1 week of step reduction (≤ 3000 steps/day) randomized to either no intervention (Control), twice daily EMS, or twice daily EMS with BFR (EMS + BFR). Oral glucose tolerance and tests

Hypertension is a major public health issue affecting 68 million adults in the United States. Lifestyle modifications including complementary therapies such as the movement based mind body practice of yoga have become increasingly popular in the United States and have been considered as a potential alternative to medication in blood pressure reduction. We completed a pilot study in 2009 which showed meaningful decreases in 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure readings after a 12 week period of yoga participation. Based on data from our pilot study we are now completing The Lifestyle Modification
