[Influence of body weight and weight increase on the development and severity of an EPH gestosis (author's transl)].

3385 consecutive records of deliveries at the Ist Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University Hospital, Vienna, were reviewed. Particular attention was paid to increased weight gain during pregnancy--defined as a total weight gain of more than 13,4 kg--and EPH-gestosis. Patients were put into one of two groups: (1) no increased weight gain during pregnancy, and (2) increased weight gain of over 13,4 kg. Each group was further divided into women with no or only slight symptoms of gestosis (gestosisindex 0 to 3) and gravidae with moderate or severe EPH-gestosis (gestosis index 4 or

Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions for Weight Management Among Adults With Excess Body Weight: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) use real-time monitoring to deliver personalized support at optimal moments, demonstrating potential for improving lifestyle behaviors in weight management. OBJECTIVE: This study provides an overview of how JITAIs have been used or developed for weight management in adults with excess body weight. METHODS: This scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's 5-step framework and the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist to ensure methodological rigor. Eight…

Altered Ulnar Variance With Full-Body Weight-Bearing During Handstands With Upper Extremity Weight-Bearing CT.

PURPOSE: Ulnar variance (UV) is a radiographic measurement relating the articular surface heights of the distal radius and ulna. Abnormal UV increases the risk for wrist pathology; however, it only provides a static measurement of an inherently dynamic bony relationship that changes with wrist position and loading. The purpose of this study was to investigate how full-body weight-bearing affects UV using weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT). METHODS: Ten gymnasts completed two 45-second scans inside a WBCT machine while performing a handstand on a flat platform (H) and parallettes (P). A…

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN MATERNAL BODY MASS INDEX AND WEIGHT GAIN WITH LOW BIRTH WEIGHT IN EASTERN THAILAND.

We conducted a retrospective study to determine the association between maternal body mass index and pregnancy weight gain with low birth weight newborns (LBWN) at Phrapokklao Hospital in eastern Thailand. We evaluated the files of 2,012 women who delivered at the hospital. Data obtained from the charts were parity, maternal age, body mass index (BMI), prepregnancy weight, weight gained during pregnancy, gestational age, hematocrit level, referral status, place of residence, fetal presentation, completion of antenatal care visits and maternal HIV infection. Sixty-five point two percent of subj

Increased body weight associated with prolactin secreting pituitary adenomas: weight loss with normalization of prolactin levels.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperprolactinaemia in humans may be associated with a high prevalence of obesity but the nature of this link is poorly defined. The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between hyperprolactinaemia and body weight in patients with prolactin-secreting pituitary tumours. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective study of prolactinoma patients treated at the Endocrine Institute of the Tel Aviv Medical Center, Israel, during the period 1989-1996. Patients with clinically non-functioning pituitary macroadenomas (NFA) served as the control group. Data on demographic parameters,…

Birth weight, postnatal weight gain, and adult body composition in five low and middle income countries.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the associations between birth weight (BW), infancy, and childhood weight gain and adult body composition. METHODS: Subjects included participants of five birth cohort studies from low and middle income nations (Brazil, Guatemala, India, Philippines, and South Africa; n = 3432). We modeled adult body composition as a function of BW and conditional weight gain (CW), representing changes in weight trajectory relative to peers, in three age intervals (0-12 months, 12-24 months, 24 months-mid childhood). RESULTS: In 34 of 36 site- and sex-specific models, regression coeff

Effect of a Low-Glycemic Index Nutritional Intervention on Body Weight and Selected Cardiometabolic Parameters in Children and Adolescents with Excess Body Weight and Dyslipidemia.

Excess body weight in pediatric patients and the resulting dyslipidemia, if left untreated, are a serious risk factor for cardiovascular disease in young adults. Despite this, there is still no effective and validated nutritional strategy for the treatment of overweight/obesity and comorbid dyslipidemia in children and adolescents. A low-glycemic index (LGI) diet may be recommended, but evidence for its effectiveness in the pediatric population is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional intervention in children and adolescents with excess body weight and…

Ciliary ARL13B Is Essential for Body Weight Regulation in Mice.

The molecular mechanisms by which primary cilia regulate energy homeostasis remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated whether the ciliary GTPase ARL13B regulates energy homeostasis and whether its localization to cilia is required to control body weight and feeding. Using genetic tools to isolate cilia-specific functions, we found that systemic exclusion of ARL13B from cilia causes hyperphagia and obesity in mice and that ciliary ARL13B is required in the nervous system for weight control. These findings identify ciliary ARL13B as a key regulator of energy homeostasis, contributing to our u…

Postoperative Body Weight Changes and Effect on Midurethral Sling Failure.

IMPORTANCE: Little is known about the effect of weight change following surgery on midurethral sling outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of body weight change after midurethral sling on the 24-month subjective outcome. We hypothesized that body weight gain would increase the chance of subjective failure. STUDY DESIGN: This was a secondary analysis of the Trial of Mid-Urethral Slings. The primary outcome was subjective failure at 24 months postoperatively. Secondary outcomes include objective failure and combined (objective/subjective) failure at 24 mo…

Plasmapheresis in Low Body Weight Infant With Acute Liver Failure.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an established treatment modality in the management of acute liver failure, with evidence from multicen … lication in pediatric populations presents unique challenges, particularly in infants with very low body weight. Here, we describe the case of a 6-month-old infant with end-stage liver disease secondary to biliary atresia, in whom TPE was successfully implemented as a bridging strategy to urgent liver transplantation despite profound hepatic dysfunction and a …

Lymphocyte Antigen 6G Mediates Vagotomy-Associated Reduction in Body Weight.

Dysregulation of adipocyte function is an important component of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. It is increasingly evident that inte … vagus signaling affects adipose tissue physiology. As expected, vagotomized male animals had lower body weight and epididymal white adipose tissue mass as compared with controls. Vagotomized animals showed increased Ly6G+ cell infiltration in eWAT. Interestingly, vagotomy-associated weight loss was significantly attenuated in neutrophil-deficient Ly6GcreMcl1 …

The effects of graduated driver licensing on teenage body weight.

The graduated driver licensing (GDL) program requires teenage drivers to pass through an intermediate stage, which contains specific driving restrictions such as a night curfew or a limit on the number of teen passengers to be carried, before earning full driving privileges. Using individual data from the 1999 to 2017 biennial Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBS) combined with state-level GDL policy variations, we estimate the effects of GDL on teenage body weight in the United States. We find that the presence of GDL raises adolescents' body mass index Z-score and their likelihood o…

Body weight management in overweight and obese breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that overweight and obese breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of cancer recurrence and have higher all-cause mortality. Obesity has an impact on breast cancer survivor's quality of life (QOL) and increases the risk of longer-term morbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Many cancer guidelines recommend survivors maintain a healthy weight but there is a lack of evidence regarding which weight loss method to recommend. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of different body weight loss approaches in breast cancer survivors who ar…

Sleeve gastrectomy rapidly enhances islet function independently of body weight.

Bariatric surgeries including vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) ameliorate obesity and diabetes. Weight loss and accompanying increases to insulin sensitivity contribute to improved glycemia after surgery; however, studies in humans also suggest weight-independent actions of bariatric procedures to lower blood glucose, possibly by improving insulin secretion. To evaluate this hypothesis, we compared VSG-operated mice with pair-fed, sham-surgical controls (PF-Sham) 2 weeks after surgery. This paradigm yielded similar postoperative body weight and insulin sensitivity between VSG and calorically …

Obesity, body weight regulation and the brain: insights from fMRI.

Obesity constitutes a major global health threat. Despite the success of bariatric surgery in delivering sustainable weight loss and improvement in obesity-related morbidity, effective non-surgical treatments are urgently needed, necessitating an increased understanding of body weight regulation. Neuroimaging studies undertaken in people with healthy weight, overweight, obesity and following bariatric surgery have contributed to identifying the neurophysiological changes seen in obesity and help increase our understanding of the mechanisms driving the favourable eating behaviour changes and su…
