Low-lying thyroglossal duct cyst with lateral cervical discharge masquerading as a second branchial cleft fistula: a case report.

The diagnosis of a thyroglossal duct cyst is often apparent when it presents with typical findings. We report a case of a 6 year-old girl with a low-lying thyroglossal duct cyst presenting with recurrent lateral cervical discharge without palpable mass, thus mimicking a second branchial cleft fistula. CT scan differentiated the lesion from a second branchial cleft fistula, and a standard Sistrunk procedure cured the lesion. In patients who show lateral cervical discharge without definite mass, therefore mimicking a second branchial cleft fistula, a low-lying thyroglossal duct cyst should be co

A rudimentary tragus in the nasopharynx: case report, literature review, and discussion of embryologic development.

We describe the rare case of a nine year-old girl with a several month history of mouth breathing and nasal obstruction due to a rudimentary tragus in the nasopharynx. We focus on the accessory tragus and its origins by describing the embryologic development of the external ear. Based on our review of the medical literature, this is the first report of a nasopharyngeal mass with a pathologic diagnosis of a rudimentary tragus.

Unusual extension of the first branchial cleft anomaly.

First branchial cleft is the only branchial structure that persists as the external ear canal, while all other clefts are resorbed. Incomplete obliteration and the degree of closure cause the varied types of first branchial cleft anomalies. They were classified based on the anatomical and histological features. We present an unusual type of first branchial cleft anomaly involving the external auditory canal, the middle ear and the nasopharynx through the eustachian tube.

[The fistula of the first branchial cleft A critical presentation of its pathogenesis and its clinical and surgical problems. A description of one case combined with a fistula auris congenita (author's transl)].

A case of congenital fistula of the first branchial cleft (Ohr-Hals-Fistel) is presented. Based on the previously published cases the anatomical and clinical aspects of the disease are summed up. Pathogenesis is discussed on the underlying principles of embryological basic research, centering on Hochstetter's "Entwicklungsgeschichte der Ohrmuschel und des äusseren Gehörganges des Menschen" (1948), a publication that is hardly known. Some hypotheses on the genesis of the fistula of the first branchial cleft are criticised and a new hypothesis is developed to the effect that the fistula is cause

Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-positive cells in spleen, appendix and branchial cleft cysts in pediatric patients.

We evaluated spleens (n = 26), appendices (n = 10) and branchial cleft cysts (n = 6) for TdT-positive cells in pediatric patients. In spleen, appendix and branchial cleft cysts the range of TdT-positivity was 0-13, 0-96 and 0-6 TdT+ cells/hpf, respectively. In spleens, scattered TdT+ cells were seen most frequently in periarteriolar lymphoid sheath regions.

[Complicated retroauricular fistula with external ear major dysgenesis. A case report].

Branchial cleft anomalies are the second most common congenital head and neck lesions in children. The first congenital head and neck lesion is thyroglossal duct cysts. First branchial cleft anomalies are rare congenital head and neck malformations (8 % of branchial cleft anomalies). The initial clinical manifestation was recurrent infections and/ or discharge in auricular, periauricular, parotid or upper neck regions. These anomalies are extremely rare and other associated facial malformations were described. The computed tomography and magnetic resonance can help the diagnosis. The antibioti

Complete fistula of the second branchial cleft: case report of catheter-aided total excision.

The authors report an extremely rare case of complete fistula of the second branchial cleft, with an external opening in the skin and an internal opening in the oropharyngeal mucosa. A 13-year-old girl presented with the complaint of intermittent drainage from the right side of her neck, a problem that had existed since birth. Fistulography revealed a complete fistula of the second branchial cleft. Before surgical excision, a 4-F catheter and a 0.018-in guide-wire were inserted into the external opening of the fistula and passed through to the tonsillar region under fluoroscopic guidance. The

[Voluminous cervical amygdaloid cyst: about a case].

Amygdaloid cysts are benign dysembryologic cystic tumors developing in the anterolateral portion of the neck. They account for 2% of all neck tumors located in the laterocervical region. They mostly result from branchial cleft abnormalities, accounting for 6.1-85.2% of all second branchial cleft abnormalities. They are due to the persistence of the cervical sinus during the differentiation of the branchial apparatus. They manifest as a laterocervical swelling in the anterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The diagnosis of cyst is confirmed by ultrasound and CT scan. Treatment is based

Aglossia with congenital absence of the mandibular rami and other craniofacial abnormalities.

We describe a severe first branchial arch abnormality including nearly complete absence of mandible, hypoplasia of the maxilla and the zygomatic arches, and complete gingival fusion in a chromosomally normal child born to a nonconsanguineous couple who deny prenatal exposures. A tight orbicularis oris muscle caused the lips to be constantly pursed. Intraoral contents could only be defined after the fused gingiva were separated. The infant had hypoplasia of the buccal cavity with a persistent membrane separating it from the pharynx; palate structures and tongue were absent. The orbits and midfa

[The anatomic bases of the surgical treatment of pharyngo-laryngeal cancers].

It is essential to recognize certain laryngeal and hypopharyngeal landmarks in order to choose the most appropriate surgical approach for excision of a tumor in any given site: that the larynx has two embryological origins, branchial and non-branchial, separated by the glottis, that the cartilaginous skeleton and the ossification of the thyroid cartilage provide a means for the spread of endolaryngeal cancer, that the pre-epiglottic region is divided in two by a medial wall and is closely connected to the endolarynx through the hollow vascular channels of the fibro-cartilage of the epiglottis,

Craniofacial, vestibular and bone defects in mice lacking the Distal-less-related gene Dlx5.

The Dlx5 gene encodes a Distal-less-related DNA-binding homeobox protein first expressed during early embryonic development in anterior regions of the mouse embryo. In later developmental stages, it appears in the branchial arches, the otic and olfactory placodes and their derivatives, in restricted brain regions, in all extending appendages and in all developing bones. We have created a null allele of the mouse Dlx5 gene by replacing exons I and II with the E. coli lacZ gene. Heterozygous mice appear normal. Beta-galactosidase activity in Dlx5+/- embryos and newborn animals reproduces the kno
