Lipid-associated sialic acid levels in human breast cyst fluids.

Benign mammary gross cystic disease is the most common breast lesion. Women with apocrine changes of epithelium lining the cysts are at higher risk for developing breast cancer than the normal female population. Sialic acid has drawn considerable interest because of carbohydrate aberrations in malignant cells. The current investigation determined the concentrations of lipid-associated sialic acid (LASA) in 62 breast cyst fluids and sera. Data analyses show a significant increase in the mean values of LASA in metabolically active apocrine cysts when compared to the cysts with Na+/K+ > 3 (flatte…

Unconjugated and glucuronide steroid levels in human breast cyst fluid.

The present report deals with the concentrations of C-21, C-19 and C-18 steroids as well as steroid glucuronides, namely androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol glucuronide, androsterone glucuronide, estradiol glucuronide, and estrone glucuronide (E1-G) in breast cyst fluid (BCF). The concentration of the gross breast cystic disease protein 15 (GCDFP-15) was also measured and its value was correlated with concentrations of unconjugated steroids as well as steroid conjugates. The present data indicate that for a large number of unconjugated steroids (namely pregnenolone, progesterone, dehydroepiandrost…

Epidermal growth factor and oestradiol in human breast cyst fluid.

Gross cystic breast disease is a common condition in women. Women with apocrine breast cysts (breast cyst fluid Na+/K+ less than 3) may be at higher risk of breast cancer than women who have cysts lined by flattened epithelium (Na+/K+ greater than or equal to 3). Breast cyst fluid concentrations of epidermal growth factor were significantly higher in the low electrolyte ratio group than in the high electrolyte ratio group (356.2 ng/ml vs 104.1 ng/ml, P less than 0.0003). A negative correlation was obtained between intracystic epidermal growth factor concentrations and Na+/K+ (rs = -0.666, P le…

Levels of eighteen non-conjugated and conjugated steroids in human breast cyst fluid: relationships with cyst type.

The present study investigates the levels of a large series of 18 non-conjugated or conjugated steroids in 71 samples of human breast cyst fluid (BCF) as divided into three groups corresponding to different electrolyte composition. In the type 1 group, the K+/Na+ ratio was higher than 1.5, while in type 2 it was lower than 0.66 and finally type 3 had an intermediate ratio. Pregnenolone (PREG) and progesterone (PROG) levels were approximately 2-fold higher (P less than 0.05) in the type 2 than in the type 1 group while both 17-OH-pregnenolone (17-OH-PREG) and 17-OH-progesterone (17-OH-PROG) con…

Epidermoid Cyst of the Breast With Ultrasonographic Manifestation: A Case Report.

Epidermal cysts are common benign cutaneous lesions that may occur on anybody skin surface, with a predilection for hair follicles, and generally demonstrate a favorable prognosis with few complications. In comparison, breast epidermal cysts are extremely rare. Given the unique anatomical and glandular features of breast tissue, these lesions are more susceptible to infection, rupture, and malignant transformation than epidermal cysts occurring at other cutaneous sites. This study analyzed the multimodal ultrasonographic findings of one case and reviewed relevant literature to summarize its cl

Epidermal cyst in the breast: A common entity at an uncommon location.

The epidermal cysts are benign cysts most commonly found in the head and neck region and trunk. Epidermal cysts in breast are very rare with approximately 50 cases described in literature. It is important to diagnose these correctly as they may be misdiagnosed as benign or malignant mammary gland tumor both clinically and radiologically. We hereby report a rare case of epidermal cyst of breast clinically mistaken for a fibroadenoma in a 35 year old female, which was diagnosed on fine needle aspiration cytology as epidermal cyst and later confirmed on histopathology. This case is being reported

Estrone and estradiol metabolism in vivo in human breast cysts.

Fibrocystic disease of the breast manifesting palpable cysts express breast cyst fluids frequently containing estrogen sulfates at concentrations far exceeding those found in sera of the patient. The study explored the potential of the breast cyst to synthesize some of these estrogen sulfates. Deuterated estrone and estradiol were synthesized and either (estradiol, 4 cases or estrone, 2 cases) was injected into a cyst. The cyst was aspirated at approximately 0, 4 and 8 h, the target being 1 ml, 50% and complete aspiration respectively. Metabolites were purified sequentially by ether extraction…

Epidermal inclusion cysts of the breast: three lesions with calcifications.

PURPOSE: To determine whether there are any mammographic and ultrasonographic (US) features of epidermal inclusion cysts of the breast, including heterogeneous microcalcifications, that may be used to preclude unnecessary biopsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical history and imaging findings in 15 patients who had undergone surgical excision of an epidermal inclusion cyst were reviewed. RESULTS: In 11 patients, imaging findings of an epidermal inclusion cyst were noted, including 10 patients with mammographic findings, one with US findings only, and seven with mammographic and US findings. [Level of immunosuppressive acidic protein in the fluid of breast cysts].

IAP marker was detected by radio-immunodiffusion in breast gross cyst fluid and in serum. No correlation was found between this antigen and cyst' cytological type, serum concentrations and acute phlogosis. In most cysts IAP was not valuable; on the other hand, high levels of glycoprotein were found only in the subgroup on relapsed class of apocrine cysts.

Milk of calcium within tiny benign breast cysts.

Small amounts of milk of calcium settling to the bottom of multiple tiny benign breast cysts produce the mammographic picture of clustered linear and curvilinear calcifications when imaged in lateral projection with a horizontal x-ray beam. These calcifications, although benign, may be confused with the microcalcifications of carcinoma. Milk of calcium is found much more frequently in small breast cysts than anywhere else in the body. It is not at all uncommon, occurring in more than 4% of women undergoing diagnostic mammography. Fortunately, the overall mammographic appearance of milk of calc…

The diagnostic and therapeutic value of breast cyst puncture and pneumocystography.

Out of 53,459 women undergoing mammography, 434 pneumocystographic examinations were performed in 338 patients. Thirteen benign and 13 malignant intracystic tumors were detected, for a frequency of 6.0%. Intracystic cancers comprised 1.3% of all malignant tumors. Neither visual nor cytological examination of cyst fluid was sufficient to detect or rule out cancer, and the authors feel that pneumocystography is the only reliable method. Excision is the preferred therapy, and histological examination is the definitive method of differentiating benign from malignant tumors. In more than 97% of cas

Carcinoma arising in the wall of a breast cyst during pregnancy.

A 23-year-old patient developed a carcinoma in the wall of a breast cyst during the second trimester of an otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy. A review of the literature revealed 7 reported cases of carcinoma of the breast arising in a cyst wall. However, none of these these cases has been associated with pregnancy. The relationship of fibrocystic disease and carcinoma of the breast is discussed. The possible influence of pregnancy and age on the prognosis of this patient are also considered.

Hydatid cyst presenting as a breast lump in a male patient.

The breast is a rare primary site of hydatid disease and accounts for only 0.27% of cases. Mammary hydatidosis generally occurs in females and has never been described in male patients. In this paper, the authors report a new case of isolated hydatid cyst of the breast in a 35-year-old previously healthy man, who presented with a left breast painless lump of one year duration. Physical examination showed a non-tender and immobile mass in the upper lateral quadrant of the left breast, with normal overlying skin and nipple. There was no palpable lymph node in the left axilla and the contralatera

Preoperative diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the breast: a case report.

Hydatid cyst of the breast is endemic in some areas like sheep-raising countries. The location of the disease is mostly in the liver and lungs. We presents a case of 66-year-old female with hydatid cyst of the breast diagnosed pre-operatively by core needle biopsy. Complete radiology workup are also provided which includes mammography, ultrasound, and computed tomography images. Hydatid cyst of the breast is extremely rare even in endemic areas, its only accounts for 0.27% of all cases. Only few reports are published in the literatures about breast hydatid cyst and majority of cases have been

Sclerosis of gross cysts of the breast: a three-year study.

Breast cysts can be separated into two types: Type I cyst with a lining epithelium which shows apocrine metaplasia, and Type II cyst with an epithelium which is markedly attenuated or absent. The risk of subsequent breast cancer among patients with Type I cysts can be up to 4. The standard treatment is fine needle aspiration, but 20% of the cysts recur. Pharmacological treatment has been tried, which reduces size and volume, but has side-effects and a high recurrence rate post-treatment occurs. The objectives of this prospective study were to sclerose the cyst, induce its regression and preven…

A Case of Apocrine Carcinoma of the Breast Presenting as Two Cysts.

A case of apocrine carcinoma of the breast presenting as two cysts is reported. A 60-year-old woman had two soft, mobile, well-defined masses measuring 4 x 2.5 cm and 1.5 x2.5 cm in diameter in the lower-inner quadrant of the right breast. Tumor markers such as CEA, CA15-3, BCA225 and NCC-ST-439 were within normal limits. Mammography showed two oval radioopaque masses with microcalcificatin in the smaller one. Ultrasonography disclosed two cysts and papillary projection in the larger one. Fine needle aspiration cytology revealed apocrine carcinoma of the breast. Excisional biopsy confirmed the

[The percutaneous treatment of breast cysts. A proposed new method].

Percutaneous needle aspiration of symptomatic breast cysts has nowadays replaced surgery. The medical literature reports on the accidental breaking of breast cysts during mammography. The authors report their personal experience with the percutaneous treatment of symptomatic breast cysts by cyst wall breaking. Twenty symptomatic breast cysts were treated with US-guided needle aspiration and 6-7 times more air than the aspirated fluid was injected through the same needle left in situ to break the cyst wall. US follow-up scans were performed 3, 6 and 12 months after the percutaneous treatment. T…
