These have be … as chronic gastritis is related to chronic gastric ulceration. Regeneration of Duodenal Mucosa. The Brunner glands as well as the crypts of Lieberkühn appear to regenerate from cells in the base of these crypts, where there is a marked increase in mitotic activity. It is rare to see mitotic activity in normal or regenerating Brunner glands. Surface epithelium re …

Characterization of mucus glycoproteins in the intestinal mucosa of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) following lectin histochemistry.

The glycoproteins of the small intestines, caecum and colon of three adult elephants and one recently weaned elephant calf were examined by means of lectin histochemistry. Tissue sections were histochemically stained with peroxidase-labelled concanavalin A (Con A), asparagus-pea (TPA), peanut (PNA) and wheat-germ (WGA) lectins. Con A and TPA showed no binding activity in the intestinal tract of the adult elephants or the duodenum and ileum of the elephant calf, but did show a small amount of binding activity in the caecum and colon of the calf. WGA bound very intensely throughout the intestina

Clinicopathological features of elevated lesions of the duodenal bulb.

We present here our findings on patients with an elevated lesion of the duodenal bulb. All these patients were treated in our clinics between the years 1984 and 1988. These lesions were present in 36 of 8,802 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal pan-endoscopy. Two patients had a duodenal carcinoma, 2 an adenoma, and 1 a Brunner's gland adenoma. There were 15 with a hyperplastic polyp, 3 with a heterogenic gastric mucosa, 3 with Brunner's gland hyperplasia, 6 with duodenitis, and 4 with regenerative mucosa. Among these 36 lesions, only 69% (25 lesions) were evident on the upper gastroi

A postnatal network of co-hepato/pancreatic stem/progenitors in the biliary trees of pigs and humans.

A network of co-hepato/pancreatic stem/progenitors exists in pigs and humans in Brunner's Glands in the submucosa of the duodenum, in peribiliary glands (PBGs) of intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary trees, and in pancreatic duct glands (PDGs) of intrapancreatic biliary trees, collectively supporting hepatic and pancreatic regeneration postnatally. The network is found in humans postnatally throughout life and, so far, has been demonstrated in pigs postnatally at least through to young adulthood. These stem/progenitors in vivo in pigs are in highest numbers in Brunner's Glands and in PDGs nea

Epidermal growth factor inhibits cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcers.

The effect of the duodenal ulcerogen cysteamine on secretion of epidermal growth factor from Brunner's gland pouches was studied in the rat. Total output of immunoreactive epidermal growth factor was reduced to approximately 55%, compared with controls, 5 h after administration of cysteamine (300 mg/kg, s.c.). Furthermore, measurements on tissue extracts of the pouches revealed that 5 h after cysteamine treatment, Brunner's glands were depleted of epidermal growth factor. The effect on ulcer development of intraduodenally applied exogenous epidermal growth factor (1 micrograms/kg . h) also was

Peptic cells.

Immunocytochemical studies have demonstrated the existence of five different types of peptic cells in man. These are chief and mucus neck cells in fundic gland mucosa, the pyloric glands in antral mucosa, and the cardiac and Brunner's glands. There are two immunochemically distinct groups of pepsinogens, pepsinogen group I (PG I) and pepsinogen group II (PG II). Chief cells and mucous neck cells in fundic gland mucosa contain both PG I and PG II. Cardiac gland cells, pyloric gland cells and cells in Brunner's glands are clear staining (with hematoxylin and eosin) and usually contain only PG II

The Brunner adenoma of the duodenum with positive fecal occult blood and anemia: A case report.

RATIONALE: Brunner gland adenoma (BGA) is a rare benign duodenal tumor that is an adenomatoid lesion in nature rather than an actual tumor. Patients with different adenoma sizes have various clinical manifestations with nonspecific clinical symptoms. Here, We report a case of BGA with black stool and anemia as the primary manifestations. PATIENT CONCERNS: A young female patient was admitted to the hospital because of black stool and anemia. Endoscopic surgery was performed to a definitive diagnosis, and endoscopic tumor-like lesions were resected. DIAGNOSIS: The patient was diagnosed with du

Estimation and comparison of the contents of blood group B antigens in selected human tissues by microphotometric quantification of Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin I-B4 staining with or without prior alpha-galactosidase digestion.

Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin I-B4 (GSAI-B4) has broader specificity for B antigen variants and can recognize the antigens in a wide variety of human tissues. Thus, the concentration range of GSAI-B4 required for staining and the susceptibility of staining to alpha-galactosidase digestion is presumed to correlate well with the density of B antigens in tissue sections. By microphotometric quantification of staining intensity at different concentrations of GSAI-B4 with or without alpha-galactosidase digestion, concentration of B antigens in selected tissues was evaluated and compared. The nodular duodenum in chronic renal failure.

A retrospective study of barium meals in 120 patients with chronic renal failure demonstrated duodenal abnormalities in 38 cases (31%). Multiple nodular filling defects were shown in 28 patients (23%), while in 10 cases (8%) peptic ulceration was found on a background of smooth duodenal mucosa. There was no common cause for the renal failure in the group with nodules. The nodular changes were a direct consequence of the uraemia and were unrelated to dialysis, renal transplantation or drug therapy. They were found almost exclusively in males, and in the more severe degrees of uraemia. Associate

Giant hemorrhagic hamartoma of the Brunner's of duodenum: a case report.

A 56-year-old woman presented with hematemesis and melena. She was hemodynamically stable, with hemoglobin at 5.2 g/dL. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy after transfusion showed twisting of the second duodenum (D2). Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed intussusception caused by a duodenal mass without ischemia. Endoscopic ultrasound was inconclusive, and tumor markers were normal. Exploratory laparotomy found no peritoneal carcinomatosis. Duodenotomy exposed a 7 cm pedunculated submucosal tumor in D 2. Cannulation of the cystic duct identified the papilla, and an Escat d

[Differential diagnosis of tumors of the duodenal bulb by endoscopy and biopsy (author's transl)].

Duodenoscopy was performed in 2 602 patients; malignant tumors were found in 5, hyperplasia of Brunner's glands in 5, hyperplasia of lymphatic follicles in 26, inflammatory pseudo-polyps in 9, and ectopic gastric mucosa in 5 cases. Only 3 of the big tumors had been detected by x-ray examinations; enlarged lymphatic follicles and the polyps had escaped x-ray detection altogether. Infiltration of the mucosa by tumor tissue can be suspected merely on the ground of endoscopic inspection with a high degree of probability. Histological diagnosis depends on forceps biopsy. An Unusual Gastric Polyp: Brunneroma.

Brunneromas or polypoid hamartomas are benign lesions arising from Brunner glands. They are usually benign lesions with low potential for malignancy. They are usually located in the duodenum and manifest with different unspecific symptoms, such as abdominal pain, nausea, or bloating. Other more serious manifestations are also reported in the literature that are related to the size of the lesion. Usually, they are treated with endoscopic resection, with some lesions requiring surgical intervention. We present a case of a gastric antral polypoid lesion that was consistent with Brunneroma on hist…

Delineation of the healthy rabbit duodenum by immunohistochemistry - A short communication.

The duodenum acts as a vital organ that performs fundamental physiological functions like digestion and nutrient absorption. Situated in the lower abdomen, the duodenum is located between the stomach and the jejunum. Usually, the duodenum is divided into four anatomical portions. We here compare paraffin embedded and cryosections of the healthy rabbit duodenum for research purposes. This analysis evaluates the differential outcomes resulting from the application of these fixation methodologies in conjunction with immunohistochemical assays targeting extracellular matrix markers collagen I, col

Giant Brunner's hamartomas of the duodenum and obstructive jaundice. An overview of the literature and suspicion of malignancy in a case.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: 150 cases of Brunner's gland hamartoma (BGH) have been reported in the literature. BGHs are benign and are thought not to cause bile obstruction. METHODS: In this case report, a 60-year-old male is presented with unexplained obstructive jaundice who was also known for over 17 years with diffuse adenomatous hyperplasia of Brunner's glands in the duodenum. Despite the benign preoperative diagnosis, the choice of treatment was Whipple's procedure due to suspicion of a coexisting malignancy. RESULTS: Pathological analysis of the resection specimen revealed multiple BGHs and an a

Effect of antisecretory agents and vagotomy on healing of "chronic" cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcers in rats.

Penetrated cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcers in rats have a very prolonged course of healing. In this study, it was investigated how much the healing of these ulcers is accelerated by some treatments. The treatments included omeprazole, cimetidine, and truncal vagotomy. In addition, the effect of omeprazole and cimetidine on gastric acid secretion was investigated in chronic gastric fistula rats. After 25 days of treatment, significantly more rats in the treated groups had healed ulcers than in the control group. There was little further improvement up to 100 days of treatment, and the differ

Aquaporins in Glandular Secretion.

Exocrine and endocrine glands deliver their secretory product, respectively, at the surface of the target organs or within the bloodstream. The release of their products has been shown to rely on secretory mechanisms often involving aquaporins (AQPs). This chapter will provide insight into the role of AQPs in secretory glands located within the gastrointestinal tract, including salivary glands, gastric glands, duodenal Brunner's glands, liver, gallbladder, intestinal goblets cells, and pancreas, as well and in other parts of the body, including airway submucosal glands, lacrimal glands, mammar

Morphological changes of the gastroduodenal mucosa in regular dialysis uraemic patients.

An endoscopic and biopsy study of the upper gastrointestinal tract in 102 patients receiving regular dialysis treatment (RDT) for chronic renal failure, showed prominent hypertrophic folds and a peculiar pale-grey or pale-pink colour of the gastric mucosa in most cases. Gastric erosions occurred in 11 cases and gastric ulcer in two. Duodenal erosions were found in 13 cases, eight of which were associated with hyperplasia of Brunner's glands. Duodenal ulcer occurred in one case. The histological findings were compared with those in 100 subjects with an endoscopically normal gastro-duodenal trac

Endoscopic features, pathological correlates and possible origin of foveolar gastric metaplasia presenting as a duodenal polyp.

It has recently been shown that duodenal foveolar gastric metaplasia (FGM) sometimes presents as a polyp. The mechanism by which FGM develops into a polypoid lesion is unknown and it is unclear whether this form of FGM is indistinguishable from other polypoid lesions or whether endoscopists do not recognize it because they are unfamiliar with it. We identified and retrieved archival cases of FGM endoscopically suspicious for adenomatous polyp and examined their pathological, clinical and endoscopic features. Endoscopic features of the 13 identified FGMs presenting as polyps were heterogeneous

Insights into the Function of Aquaporins in Gastrointestinal Fluid Absorption and Secretion in Health and Disease.

Aquaporins (AQPs), transmembrane proteins permeable to water, are involved in gastrointestinal secretion. The secretory products of the glands are delivered either to some organ cavities for exocrine glands or to the bloodstream for endocrine glands. The main secretory glands being part of the gastrointestinal system are salivary glands, gastric glands, duodenal Brunner's gland, liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, intestinal goblet cells, exocrine and endocrine pancreas. Due to their expression in gastrointestinal exocrine and endocrine glands, AQPs fulfill important roles in the secretion of vari
