The Long-Evans Cinnamon (LEC) rat, an inbred mutant rat derived from the Long-Evans strain, is characterized by spontaneous hepatitis due to gross accumulation of hepatic Cu. The accumulation, accompanied by marked induction of metallothionein (MT), is believed to be due to the inherent lack of output of Cu into the bile duct and blood vessels. In this study, the acute effect of tetrathiomolybdate (TTM), a chelator for output of hepatic Cu and Cd in LEC rats treated with Cd, was investigated. Female LEC rats were injected subcutaneously with Cd (Cd; 1.0 mg/kg) to induce Cd, Cu-MT. Fischer rats

The asymmetric unit of the crystal structure of the title compound, [Cd(2)Cl(4)(C(5)H(8)N(2))(3)](n), contains two Cd(II) cations, three 1-ethyl-1H-imidazole ligands, and four Cl(-) anions. The two Cd(II) atoms have quite different coordination environments: one is octa-hedrally coordinated by four Cl atoms and two N atoms from two 1-ethyl-1H-imidazole ligands, and the second is in a severely distorted fivefold coordination by four Cl atoms and one N atom from a 1-ethyl-1H-imidazole ligand. Adjacent Cd(II) cations are inter-connected alternately by pairs of chloride bridges, generating an infi

Three feeding studies were conducted with young mice to compare the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) occurring in oyster tissue to that of cadmium chloride (CdCl2). In the first experiment, 5 or 20 ppm dietary Cd as CdCl2 depressed blood hematocrit and hemoglobin concentrations, which were further depressed by the addition of up to 3% oyster to the diet. In the second experiment, 1.5 or 3.0 ppm dietary Cd as CdCl2 did not influence hematopoiesis after 14 days exposure. The percent of the Cd dose retained in the kidney was inversely related to dosage level, directly related in the liver and femur and u…

Cadmium is a human carcinogen of worldwide concern because it accumulates in the environment due to its extremely long half-life. Its compounds are classified as human carcinogens by several regulatory agencies. Cadmium affects cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and other cellular activities and can cause numerous molecular lesions that would be relevant to carcinogenesis. For a long time cadmium has been considered as a non-genotoxic carcinogen, as it is only weakly mutagenic in bacterial and mammalian cell test systems. Recently, we presented evidence that when assayed in a test …

Apoptosis is a process of active cell death, distinct from necrosis and characterized by specific morphological and biochemical features. Although the acute hepatotoxic effects of cadmium (Cd) are well described, little is known about the occurrence of apoptosis in Cd toxicity. Therefore, mice were injected with 5-60 mumol/kg i.p. of Cd and their livers were removed 1.5-48 h later and examined by light microscopy. Cd induced both a time- and dose-dependent increase in apoptotic index, severity of necrosis, and mitotic index. Apoptotic index peaked at 9-14 h after Cd administration and then dec…

Cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity develops at cadmium concentrations in the renal cortex of 10-300 micrograms/g wet weight. The actual concentration at which it develops depends on a number of factors, e.g., exposure route, chemical species of cadmium administered, rate of administration and simultaneous exposure to other metals. The role of these factors can be explained by a mechanism of cadmium nephrotoxicity in which both extracellular and intracellular metallothionein binding play an essential role. In reindeer used for human food, cadmium was shown to be bound to metallothionein-like protei…

This study reports the cadmium concentration and histopathology of kidney tissue from 29 patients with clinical findings that motivated a diagnostic percutaneous kidney biopsy and/or a history of possible exposure to cadmium. Cadmium was found in all specimens examined including those from controls. In the patients, the mean cadmium concentration was 12.9 (0.6-45.0) micrograms cadmium per g wet kidney tissue. The highest concentrations (30-45 micrograms/g) were found in three patients with morphological and clinical findings of tubulo-interstitial damage. Patients with signs of tubulo-intersti…

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic environmental heavy metal with potential toxicity on the reproductive system. Cd-induced effects on ovarian function and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. This study integrated population-based and in vitro experiments to investigate the associations between environmental Cd exposure and ovarian dysfunction in reproductive-age women with infertility, and elucidated the potential molecular mechanisms involved. Elevated Cd exposure was significantly associated with lower serum estradiol levels and an inverted U-shaped relationship with anti-Müllerian hormone levels, …

The extensive use of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS-NPs), along with their natural formation through the complex biogeochemical transformation of anthropogenic cadmium ions (Cd2+), poses substantial risks to ecosystems and human health. Despite this, the mechanisms underlying the toxicity of CdS-NPs remain unclear. A key question is whether their toxicity arises from the nanoparticulate form of cadmium (Cd) or from the release of Cd2+. To explore this, we exposed freshwater clams (Corbicula fluminea) to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.01-1 mg/L) of CdS-NPs or Cd2+ for 10 days. H…

Cd2+ is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions that can be easily accumulated in human body via food chain. Thus, the onsite detection of Cd2+ in food is very important. However, present methods for Cd2+ detection either require the use of large equipment, or suffer from the severe interference from other analogical metal ions. This work establishes a facile Cd2+ mediated turn-on ECL method for highly selective detection of Cd2+ via cation exchanging with the nontoxic ZnS nanoparticles, owing to the unique surface-state ECL properties of CdS nanomaterials. The linear range of the calibration c

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the heavy metals that negatively affects the growth of plants. High solubilization in water leads Cd to enter into plants quite easily, thus decreasing seed germination, photosynthesis, and transpiration. It also shows an antagonistic effect with many of the plants' nutrients like Mn, Ca, K, Mg and Fe. Nowadays, inoculation of plants with ACC deaminase (ACCD) rhizobacteria to mitigate Cd's adverse effects has drawn the attention of environmental microbiologists. The rhizobacteria secrete organic compounds that can immobilize Cd in soil. Therefore, this study was accompli…

Cadmium (Cd) phytotoxicity in agricultural land is a major global concern now-a-days resulting in very poor yield. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR)-mediated bioremediation is one of the convenient strategies for detoxification of Cd from the soil and for plant growth promotion under Cd stress. The selected strain K5 was identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae based on MALDI-TOF MS ribosomal protein and 16S rDNA sequence-based homology. The strain possessed several PGP traits viz. IAA production (3413 μg/mL), phosphate solubilization (80.25 ppm), ACC deaminase activity (40 ng α-ketobutyr…

Current research suggests that cadmium (Cd) exposure may be associated with the progression of diabetic nephropathy; however, the details of this relationship are insufficiently understood. The present study investigated the effects of elevated glucose on Cd-induced toxicity to glomerular cells using in vitro and in vivo models, and it demonstrated that Cd exposure and the hyperglycemia of diabetes acting together increased the risk of developing glomerular nephrosis. In vitro, human podocytes were exposed to a DMEM low-glucose media without (control), or with Cd (as CdCl2), or a high-glucose …

With rapid socio-economic development, heavy metal pollution in water has become common and affects both environment and human health. Cadmium (Cd) has been recognized as one of the heavy metals which cause acute or chronic toxic effects if ingested. Although its toxicity is undisputed, the underlying molecular mechanisms in vivo are not fully understood. Planarians, a model organism famous for their regenerative prowess, have long been utilized to study the effects of chemical exposure. In this study, we observed apoptosis with TUNEL assay in planarians induced by cadmium sulfate (CdSO4) in a…
