Influence of chloride, sulphate, phosphate, and silicate-based potassium fertilizers and rice husk biochar on cadmium fate, complexation, leaching and uptake in maize under alkaline soil conditions.

Cadmium (Cd) behavior in alkaline soils is primarily controlled by the interplay of solution complexation, anion- mediated transformation, and solid-phase interactions. The experiment included a series of integrated analyses to monitor Cd speciation, mobility, transformation, leaching, and fate in maize plants. Soil solution chemistry, bioavailability, and leachate-mediated Cd release kinetics were monitored alongside maize growth, yield, and Cd accumulation patterns, as well as associated health risks. In the present work, we examined Cd fate under five potassium-sourced (@200 mg kg-1 K) fert

Chronic toxic and carcinogenic effects of cadmium chloride in male DBA/2NCr and NFS/NCr mice: strain-dependent association with tumors of the hematopoietic system, injection site, liver, and lung.

Although the acute toxic effects of cadmium in mice vary greatly with strain, relatively little is known about strain differences in cadmium carcinogenesis. Therefore, this work was performed to assess the chronic toxic and carcinogenic effects of cadmium in two strains of mice generally thought to be susceptible to the acute effects of cadmium. Male DBA/2NCr (DBA) and NFS/NCr (NFS) mice were given CdCl2 (40 mumol/kg, sc) either as a single dose (1 x 40) or as weekly doses for 16 weeks (16 x 40) starting at 8 weeks of age. Controls received saline. The animals were observed for the next 104 we

HSP110 expression is induced by cadmium exposure but is dispensable for cell survival of mouse NIH3T3 fibroblasts.

The effects of cadmium exposure on the expression of HSP110 were examined in mouse NIH3T3 fibroblasts. Following exposure to cadmium chloride, the level of HSP110 and HSP70 proteins increased after 3h and remained elevated at 24h. Similarly, their mRNA levels increased markedly in response to cadmium exposure. Treatment with 10μM mercury chloride, another toxic metal compound, also induced expression of HSP110; however, HSP110 expression was not induced in cells exposed to the same concentration of manganese chloride, zinc chloride, or lead chloride for 6 or 24h. Silencing of HSP110 expression

Toxicity, bioaccumulation, and interactive effects of organotin, cadmium, and chromium on Artemia franciscana.

The effects of three organotin compounds-trimethyltin chloride, dimethyltin dichloride, and dibutyltin diacetate-and two heavy metals-cadmium and hexavalent chromium-on Artemia franciscana mortality are investigated in this study. Of all the compounds tested in this work, trimethyltin chloride was, by far, the most toxic. The toxicity order for the five compounds was trimethyltin chloride > potassium dichromate > dimethyltin dichloride > dibutyltin diacetate > cadmium chloride. The big difference in toxicity between dialkyltin and trialkyltin was not accompanied by an equally big difference in

The effect of combined administration of cadmium and furosemide on auditory function in the rat.

A number of heavy metals have been associated with toxic effects to the peripheral or central auditory system. These include lead, arsenic, mercury, platinum and organic tin compounds. In addition, the ototoxic effects of some metals may be potentiated by other factors. However, the auditory effects of cadmium have not previously been reported. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the potential ototoxic effects of cadmium from an acute dosage, and its potentiation by furosemide. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were measured in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats receive

Impact of silymarin on cadmium-induced apoptosis in human spermatozoa.

Oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in spermatozoa may lead to male infertility. Environmental pollutants and heavy metals such as cadmium cause harmful effects on the reproductive system and sperm parameters through the induction of oxidative stress. Silymarin, as a potent antioxidant, is able to inhibit oxidative stress. This study was performed to investigate the protective effects of silymarin on cadmium-induced toxicity in human spermatozoa. Sperm samples were divided into the following five groups: (a) spermatozoa at 0 min, (b) spermatozoa in the control group, (c) spermatozoa treated wit

Response of hepatic carbohydrate and cyclic AMP metabolism to cadmium treatment in rats.

Daily intraperitoneal injection of cadmium chloride (0.25 or 1 mg/kg) for 21 or 45 days into rats significantly stimulated the activities of hepatic pyruvate carboxylase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase, and glucose-6-phosphatase, increased the concentrations of glucose and urea in the blood, and decreased the levels of glycogen in the liver. Whereas chronic cadmium treatment failed to alter adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate phosphodiesterase (phosphodiesterase) activity, the endogenous levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) and the activity of basal- and fluoride-stimulated fo

The effects of heavy metals on common carp white blood cells in vitro.

The in vitro effects of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc, and various cadmium compounds (chloride, sulphate and nitrate) on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) lymphocyte viability and phagocyte activity, were evaluated. The percentage of dead lymphocytes was determined after Trypan blue staining, and phagocyte activity was measured by using the nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test. Lead was the most toxic to lymphocytes--the maximum mortality exceeded 30%, and was significantly higher at 1 microM of lead, compared to the control. The maximum mortality caused by cadmium was below 10%, but was si

Characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity testing of ethanolamine-derived cadmium chelating agents.

We have synthesized and characterized the new cadmium chelating agent potassium bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminoethyldithiocarbonate hemihydrate, K[bhexan] x 0.5H2O (2), that is structurally related to the known effective in vivo cadmium chelating agent potassium bis(2-hydroxyethyl)dithiocarbamate, K[bhedtc] (1). The corresponding cadmium complex of 2 differs from di(bis(2-hydroxyethyl)dithiocarbamato)cadmium(II), Cd(bhedtc)2 (3), in that the insoluble compound exhibits an elemental composition consistent with a cadmium:ligand ratio of 2:1. The cytotoxicity of the 1-3 was investigated using the human

Effect of propolis supplementation on cadmium toxicity associated with renal and hepatic dysfunction in rats.

Cadmium (Cd), one of the toxic heavy metals, is of great importance for public health due to its use in many industrial areas. Propolis is a natural product with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties collected from plants by honey bees. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective role of propolis against the potential toxic effects of cadmium chloride in blood, liver and kidney tissues. For this purpose, rats were divided into four groups. Control group, propolis (150 mg/kg b.w.) treated group, cadmium chloride (1.76 mg/kg b.w. 1/50 LD50) treated group and cadmium chloride p

Effects of lead, mercury and cadmium on the extramolluscan larval stages of Schistosoma mansoni (Sambon).

The effects of the heavy metal pollutants, lead, mercury and cadmium on the survival and behaviour of miracidia and cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni were examined. Concentration ranges of 100-900 microM lead chloride, 0.25-20 microM mercuric chloride and 0.25-9.0 microM cadmium chloride were tested. Inversely proportional relationships between metal concentration and survival were evident with all the metals. The LC50 of miracidia was 600 microM for lead, 1 microM for mercury and 2.5 for cadmium. The LC50 of cercariae was 600 microM for lead, 6 microM for mercury and 2.5 microM for cadmium. Mo

Interaction of cadmium and zinc during prenatal development in the rat.

Cadmium chloride, zinc chloride, or a mixture of the two, labeled with 115m-Cd or 65-Zn was administered intraperitoneally to Wistar rats on day 9 of gestation. On day 20 fetuses of Cd-treated rats exhibited malformations, but those of rats given zinc or zinc plus cadmium did not. No radioactive cadmium was recovered in the fetuses or fetal membranes, although some was found in the placentas. Simultaneous administration of zinc did not alter the distribution of cadmium, but cadmium significantly increased the amount of zinc in the fetus and placenta. In a second experiment, cadmium or cadmium

Evaluation of the toxic potency of selected cadmium compounds on A549 and CHO-9 cells.

Cytotoxicity of cadmium sulphide, oxide and chloride was tested using A549 and CHO-9 cells. Metabolic activity of cells (MTT test) and cell membrane permeability (NRU test) were used as cytotoxicity endpoints. The results revealed unexpectedly low toxicity of cadmium sulphide as compared to chloride and oxide. This preliminary report does not provide any explanation for this effect, but the result may nevertheless be interesting for future studies of toxicity mechanisms of cadmium compounds. First cadmium compounds caused damage or change in the permeability of cell membranes, then inhibition

Bioaccessibility as a determining factor in the bioavailability and toxicokinetics of cadmium compounds.

Cadmium toxicity occurs where there is absorption and accumulation of cadmium ions (Cd2+) in tissues beyond tolerable levels. Significant differences in the release of Cd2+ from cadmium compounds in biological fluids, like gastric fluid, may indicate differences in bioavailability and absorption. This means that direct read-across from high solubility cadmium compounds to lower solubility compounds may not accurately reflect potential hazards. Here, the relative bioaccessibility in gastric fluid of cadmium telluride and cadmium chloride was evaluated using in vitro bioelution tests whilst the
