OBJECTIVE: Parasitic infestations are known to elicit T-helper lymphocyte type 2 (Th-2) reactions, characterized by a pronounced eosinophila and high IgE levels. In humans both elevated specific IgE levels and eosinophil counts are associated with resistance to reinfection with schistosomiasis. Renal osteodystrophy therapy in dialysis patients with calcitriol and intestinal phosphate binders containing calcium entails the risk of hypercalcemia. To compare the effects of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) alone and in combination with amiloride on urinary calcium excretion we performed 14 acute studies on 7 patients with vitamin-D-induced calciuria. We report on the case of a patient with dysgerminoma, a rare germ cell tumor, which showed hypercalcemia with an elevation of 1α,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol).
