Development of rhabdomyolysis in a child after norovirus gastroenteritis.

BACKGROUND: In children, the most significant cause of rhabdomyolysis or muscle breakdown is viral infection. However, there are no reports that norovirus, a gastroenteric virus that commonly infects children, specifically causes rhabdomyolysis. Here, we report the first pediatric case of norovirus-associated rhabdomyolysis. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 2-year-old boy with fever, diarrhea, and vomiting, was referred to our hospital with dysstasia and transaminitis. He was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. Additionally, norovirus genogroup GII was detected from stool samples by real-time qua

Occurrence of Norovirus GIV in Environmental Water Samples from Belém City, Amazon Region, Brazil.

Noroviruses are the major cause of non-bacterial acute gastroenteritis outbreaks in humans, with few reports about the occurrence of the norovirus GIV strain. We investigated the presence of norovirus GIV in surface water (river, bay, and stream) and untreated sewage, and we determined a positivity rate of 9.4% (9/96). The strains genotyped were GIV.1. To our knowledge, this is the first report of GIV in Brazil.

Norovirus GII-4 causes a more severe gastroenteritis than other noroviruses in young children.

Norovirus (NoV) GII-4 has emerged as the predominant NoV genotype in outbreaks of gastroenteritis worldwide. We determined clinical features of NoV GII-4 associated acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in comparison with AGE associated with other NoV types in infants during seasons 2001 and 2002. During the prospective follow-up period, 128 primary infections of AGE due to NoV were identified in 405 infants; of these, GII-4 was found in 40 cases (31%). NoV GII-4 was associated with longer duration of diarrhea and vomiting than other NoV genotypes, suggesting greater virulence of NoV GII-4.

Norovirus and sapovirus infections in Thailand.

Stool specimens collected between November 2002 and April 2003 from hospitalized infants with acute gastroenteritis from four distinct geographical regions in Thailand were examined for norovirus (NoV) and sapovirus (SaV) by reverse transcription-PCR and sequence analysis. Of the 80 specimens examined, we identified 11 NoV and 9 SaV single infections, and 3 NoV/SaV mixed infections. The majority of NoV strains (64%) belonged to genogroup II/ genotype 4 (GII/4; Lordsdale cluster). Other NoV strains co-circulating belonged to GII/1, GII/3, GII/6, and one new genotype cluster (GII/New). The major

"Norwalk-like viruses". Public health consequences and outbreak management.

"Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs) cause outbreaks of gastroenteritis and are spread frequently through contaminated food or water. Molecular diagnostics now enables detecting viruses in clinical and environmental specimens, linking of NLV strains causing outbreaks in multiple geographic locations, and tracing them to their sources in contaminated food or water. This report reviews recent advances in NLV detection and provides guidelines and recommendations for investigating NLV-related outbreaks, including specimen collection and disease prevention and control. This report also updates information

Genetic polymorphism across regions of the three open reading frames of "Norwalk-like viruses".

Genomic characterization of Norwalk-like human caliciviruses (NLVs) originating from outbreaks and sporadic cases of acute gastroenteritis has revealed surprisingly high levels of diversity, even in the RNA polymerase gene, which is anticipated to be highly conserved. Since information on antigenic relationship is limited, due to the lack of a tissue culture system for these viruses, strains mostly are described on the basis of their genetic relatedness. However, the lack of uniformly applied criteria has led to a confusing array of strains with different groups employing different names for s

Prevalence and genetic characterization of caliciviruses among children hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis in the United States.

Human calicivirus was the first recognized viral agent causing gastroenteritis in humans. Norovirus (NV) and Sapovirus (SV), two genera within the Caliciviridae family, cause epidemic and endemic acute gastroenteritis in children and adults. The role of these viruses as a cause of sporadic acute gastroenteritis in young children requiring hospitalization is not well established. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and genetic diversity of caliciviruses among children hospitalized with symptoms of acute gastroenteritis. Stool samples were collected over 2 years from symptomatic c…

Chronic gingivitis in a colony of cats infected with feline immunodeficiency virus and feline calicivirus.

The inadvertent introduction of feline calicivirus into a colony of 19 experimental cats, 13 of which were infected with feline immunodeficiency virus, resulted in the development of chronic gingivitis in nine animals. Of these, six were infected with both viruses, one with the immunodeficiency virus alone and two with the calicivirus alone. The gingivitis was generally more severe in the cats infected with both viruses, suggesting that feline immunodeficiency virus may make cats infected with calicivirus more susceptible to chronic gingivitis.

Clinical evaluation of a bioluminescent enzyme immunoassay for detecting norovirus in fecal specimens from patients with acute gastroenteritis.

Noroviruses (NoVs), which belong to the family Caliciviridae, are major causative agents of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Thus, rapid and highly sensitive assays for detecting NoVs are required. Recently, a bioluminescent enzyme immunoassay (BLEIA) for detecting NoVs in fecal specimens was developed. This new assay was evaluated using fecal specimens obtained from acute gastroenteritis patients. Of the 107 specimens that were found to be NoV-positive by RT-PCR or RT-LAMP, 104 specimens produced positive results in the BLEIA (sensitivity: 96.3%). On the other hand, no false-positive results …

Human Sapovirus among Outpatients with Acute Gastroenteritis in Spain: A One-Year Study.

Viral agents of human gastroenteritis affect people of all ages across the globe. As a mainly self-limiting disease, it is difficult to evaluate the real prevalence of etiological agents circulating in each region. Many of the analyzed outbreaks are caused by viruses of the family Caliciviridae, especially the genus Norovirus (NoV). Most studies have focused on other enteric viruses, leaving sapovirus (SaV) underestimated as an important emerging human threat. This one-year study analyzed clinical samples from hospital outpatients with acute gastroenteritis in Spain, with the aim of revealing …

Bayesian coalescent inference reveals high evolutionary rates and expansion of Norovirus populations.

Noroviruses (NoV) are a leading cause of outbreaks of nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis in humans worldwide and have become an important cause of hospitalization of children in South America. NoV belong to the family Caliciviridae and are non-enveloped single stranded, positive sense, RNA viruses. NoV of genotype GII/4 have emerged worldwide, causing four epidemic seasons of viral gastroenteritis during which four novel variants emerged. Despite the importance of NoV outbreaks, little is known about the evolutionary rates, viral spread and population dynamics of NoV populations. In order to g…

Characterization of capsid genes, expressed in the baculovirus system, of three new genetically distinct strains of "Norwalk-like viruses".

"Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs), members of a newly defined genus of the family Caliciviridae, are the most common agents of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the United States. Two features of NLVs have hindered the development of simple methods for detection and determination of serotype: their genetic diversity and their inability to grow in cell culture. To assess the immune responses of patients involved in outbreaks of gastroenteritis resulting from infection with NLVs, we previously used recombinant-expressed capsid antigens representing four different genetic clusters, but this panel prove…

Revisiting norovirus dose-response models: a meta-analysis and multi-model comparison for waterborne risk assessment.

Norovirus is a leading cause of gastroenteritis worldwide, and robust dose-response models are essential for quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA). However, existing models are constrained by limited human challenge data and a lack of systematic multi-model comparison, particularly for GII norovirus. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis of 408 publications and extracted 37 dose-response datasets. Five models, including three models incorporating an immunity parameter, were fitted separately to GI and GII data using maximum likelihood estimation. Apparent and consistent immunity

Waterborne norovirus outbreaks in China, 2000-2022: a systematic review.

In China, waterborne transmission is a relatively rare route for norovirus outbreaks; however, once it occurs, the outbreaks tend to be large in scale, prolonged in duration, and difficult to control. This systematic review characterizes the epidemiological features of such outbreaks in China. We searched the WANFANG, CNKI, PubMed, and Web of Science databases for literature on waterborne norovirus outbreaks published up to November 2023. From 2000 to 2022, a total of 112 outbreaks were reported in China among the 97 articles included. These outbreaks involved approximately 19,796 cases and 56

Recovery and Quantification of Norovirus in Air Samples from Experimentally Produced Aerosols.

Norovirus is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans across all age groups worldwide. Norovirus-infected patients can produce aerosolized droplets which play a role in gastroenteritis transmission. The study aimed to assess bioaerosol sampling in combination with a virus concentrating procedure to facilitate molecular detection of norovirus genogroup (G) II from experimentally contaminated aerosols. Using a nebulizer within an experimental chamber, aerosols of norovirus GII were generated at known concentrations. Air samples were then collected in both 5 mL and 20 mL water using t

Global prevalence of norovirus gastroenteritis after emergence of the GII.4 Sydney 2012 variant: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Norovirus is widely recognized as a leading cause of both sporadic cases and outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) across all age groups. The GII.4 Sydney 2012 variant has consistently prevailed since 2012, distinguishing itself from other variants that typically circulate for a period of 2-4 years. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to systematically summarize the prevalence of norovirus gastroenteritis following emergence of the GII.4 Sydney 2012 variant. METHODS: Data were collected from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases spanning the period between January 2

Norovirus detection technologies: From conventional methods to innovative biosensors.

The norovirus (NoV), known for its high contagion rate, is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis. The development of a NoV vaccine is hindered by significant antigenic variation, lack of suitable models, unknown vaccine protection duration, limited human challenge studies, complex performance patterns, and the absence of a reliable in vitro cultivation system, making prevention, early detection, and control the only effective measures to mitigate outbreaks. This review aims to discuss about several norovirus biosensor for point-of-care analysis. Several innovative biosensors have been dev

Genome characterisation of norovirus GII.P17-GII.17 detected during a large gastroenteritis outbreak in Romania in 2021.

Norovirus (NoV) is one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Genotype GII.P17-G.II.17 emerged in Asia between 2013 and 2015 and transiently replaced the GII.4 Sydney 2012 variant circulating at that time. We present the genome characterisation of a GII.P17-GII.17 strain causing a large outbreak in Romania in 2021. Our study shows that the 2021 strain belongs to a novel cluster of genotype GII.17, different from the two previously recognised P.17 clusters. Distinctive substitutions in predicted conformational epitopes of VP1 were identified for this new cluster. Also, our ph
