Zoonotic Parasites in Marmosets (Callithrix Spp.) From Southern Brazil: Insights From a One Health Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Currently, six species of Callithrix are frequently observed in anthropized and degraded environments in different regions of Brazil. This occupation favors interactions with humans and increases the risk of infection by parasites with zoonotic potential. This study assessed the occurrence of enteroparasites in free-ranging Callithrix spp. from different municipalities in Paraná state, Brazil, from a One Health approach. METHODS: Faecal samples of 37 specimens of C. penicillata, C. jacchus, and hybrid species were analyzed. RESULTS: The most frequent parasite forms observed inclu…

A pilot study evaluating dosing tolerability of 17α-estradiol in male common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

17α-estradiol extends healthspan and lifespan in male mice without significant feminization or deleterious effects on reproductive function, making it a candidate for human translation. However, studies in animal models that more accurately replicate human physiology are necessary to establish 17α-estradiol dosing standards for clinical trials. This study evaluated the tolerability of 17α-estradiol treatment in the common marmoset over a short treatment duration. We found that male marmosets tolerated two dosing regimens (0.37-0.47 or 0.62-0.72 mg/kg/day) as evidenced by the absence of gastroi

Personality, subjective well-being, and the serotonin 1a receptor gene in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

Studies of personality traits in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) indicate that there are five or six constructs-Sociability, Dominance, Neuroticism, Openness, and two related to Conscientiousness. The present study attempted to determine whether our earlier study of laboratory-housed individuals only yielded three-Dominance, Sociability, and Neuroticism-because of a low amount of between-subjects variance. To do so, we increased our sample size from 77 to 128. In addition, we ascertained the reliability and validity of ratings and whether polymorphisms related to the serotonin 1a recepto…

Effects of elevated circulating cortisol concentrations on maternal behavior in common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus).

Both acute and chronic stress can impair maternal behavior and increase rates of infant abuse in several species. The mechanisms inducing th … ent with exogenous glucocorticoids would alter maternal behavior in a primate, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Multiparous females, approximately 3-5 weeks postpartum, received daily injections of either cortisol (hydrocortisone sodium succinate and hydrocortisone acetate; N=7) or vehicle (N=7) for 8 days, and maternal behavior was characterized un …

Emergence of a Novel Canine Distemper Virus Variant in Urbanized Free-Ranging Marmosets (Callithrix penicillata).

The black-tufted marmoset (Callithrix penicillata), commonly found in urban areas of Central Brazil, is vulnerable to pathogen spillover from domestic animals and humans. Here, we report an outbreak of natural canine distemper virus (CDV) infection among urbanized free-ranging black-tufted marmosets. Five fatalities occurred in marmosets living in a neighborhood with unvaccinated dogs. Clinically, affected marmosets had lethargy, ataxia, mucocutaneous ulcerations, and crusting lesions. Postmortem findings included epithelial erosions, interstitial pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, and suppurative m…

Ultrasonographic monitoring of fetal eye growth parameters throughout gestation in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is considered an ideal species for developing genetically modified nonhuman primates (NHP) models of human disease, particularly eye disease. They have been proposed as a suitable bridge between rodents and other NHP models due to their similar ophthalmological features to humans. Prenatal ultrasonography is an accurate and reliable diagnostic tool for monitoring fetal development and congenital malformation. We monitored fetal eye growth and development using noninvasive ultrasonography in 40 heads of clinically normal fetuses during pregnancy to estab…

Luteal deficiency caused by human ovarian follicular fluid peptide in post-partum marmosets, Callithrix jacchus.

A peptide purified from human ovarian follicular fluid (hOFFP) was administered during the follicular phase of post-partum marmosets. Four of the five animals treated with hOFFP, ovulated as evidenced by the presence of ovarian stigmata at the time of laparotomy. However, only 2 of these animals became pregnant, one had a normal delivery while the other aborted. A shortening of the luteal phase was observed in the other three animals and all animals conceived in subsequent cycles. The results indicated that treatment with the ovarian follicular fluid peptide resulted in impairment of fertility

Inferring the Landscapes of Mutation and Recombination in the Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) in the Presence of Twinning and Hematopoietic Chimerism.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is one of the most commonly used nonhuman primate models in biomedical research. Yet, the population genomics of the species remains relatively poorly characterized, despite the critical importance of this knowledge in many areas of research including genome-wide association studies, models of polygenic risk scores, and scans for the targets of selection. This neglect owes, at least in part, to two biological peculiarities related to the reproductive mode of the species-frequent twinning and sibling chimerism-which are likely to affect standard populati…

Yellow fever beyond the Amazon: surveillance challenges and the role of Callithrix spp. in sylvatic cycles in Brazil.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) remains a major public health concern in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and Africa. Since late 2016, sylvatic yellow fever (YF) outbreaks and sporadic cases affecting both humans and non-human primates (NHP) have been recorded in Southern Brazil. These events raised concerns about viral persistence beyond the Amazon Basin, where YFV is endemic, and the potential reemergence of urban transmission. Neotropical NHPs are central to the ecology of sylvatic YF, but many aspects of their infection dynamics and species-specific roles remain poorly understood.

Retinorecipient areas in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus): An image-forming and non-image forming circuitry.

The mammalian retina captures a multitude of diverse features from the external environment and conveys them via the optic nerve to a myriad of retinorecipient nuclei. Understanding how retinal signals act in distinct brain functions is one of the most central and established goals of neuroscience. Using the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a monkey from Northeastern Brazil, as an animal model for parsing how retinal innervation works in the brain, started decades ago due to their marmoset's small bodies, rapid reproduction rate, and brain features. In the course of that research, a large…

Hormonal and behavioral responses to stress in lactating and non-lactating female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

In several mammalian species, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and behavioral responses to stressors are down-regulated in lactating females, possibly preventing stress-induced disruptions of maternal care. Experimental elevations of HPA axis hormones have been found to inhibit maternal behavior in lactating common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), raising the question of whether lactating female marmosets also have blunted endogenous responses to stress. Therefore, we compared HPA and behavioral responses to standardized stressors in reproductively experienced female common marmosets…

Multiple vaccine and pyridostigmine bromide interactions in the common marmoset Callithrix jacchus: immunological and endocrinological effects.

Following active service during the 1990/1991 Gulf Conflict, a number of UK and US veterans presented with a diverse range of symptoms, collectively known as Gulf Veterans Illnesses (GVI). The administration of vaccines and/or the pretreatment against possible nerve agent poisoning, pyridostigmine bromide (PB), given to Armed Forces personnel during the Gulf Conflict has been implicated as a possible factor in the aetiology of these illnesses. The possibility that adverse health effects may result from the administration of these vaccines (anthrax, pertussis, plague, yellow fever, polio, typho

Experimental leptospirosis in marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus): a new model for studies of severe pulmonary leptospirosis.

Experimental infection of marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) with Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni showed microscopic patterns of tissue reactions comparable to those seen in the severe forms of human leptospirosis, including intra-alveolar hemorrhage. The most impressive microscopic changes were seen in the lung and kidney of animals killed at days 6 and 12 after inoculation. There were extensive and irregular areas of hemorrhage predominating around main bronchial branches or diffusely spread to the pulmonary parenchyma, as well as severe tubulointerstitial nephritis. Antibody r…

Detection of rabies virus in Callithrix penicillata (Geoffroy, 1812) in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

This report describes the occurrence of the rabies virus in two species of wild animals in the urban area of Montes Claros (MOC), Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in May 2023. The virus has been detected in frugivorous chiropterans (Artibeus sp) and marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). This is the first notified case of the rabies virus in the species C. penicillata in the urban area of MOC. Our findings show that the rabies virus is circulating in the urban area of MOC; therefore, permanent preventive measures must be adopted to avoid infection of other animals and humans.
