Campylobacter enteritis in general practice.

The incidence and clinical features of campylobacter enteritis were studied in a defined general practice population over a period of three years. Specimens of faeces were cultured from a representative sample of patients suffering from acute enteritis. Of 168 patients submitting a specimen to the laboratory 34 (20.2%) were positive for thermophilic Campylobacter species. The projected campylobacter infection rate varied from 5.4% per annum in infancy to 0.3% per annum in the 5- to 14-year-olds with a mean of 1.1% per annum for the whole study population. During the same period campylobacters …

[Infantile Campylobacter enteritis (author's transl)].

9 children with campylobacter enteritis aging from 3 days to 4 years were seen over a 8-month period. In 2 cases prompt recovery was achieved by erythromycin therapy. In the remaining 7 cases, the course was most often very mild, and symptomatic therapy was sufficient. Epidemiologically, the incidence of campylobacter enteritis is comparable to that of salmonella enteritis. Obviously, birds and poultry, but also dogs, cats, sheep and other domestic and farm animals are important sources of infection. Spread among human beings has also been made probable. The most frequent clinical features are…

Campylobacter enteritis in young mice.

Young mice aged 4--6 weeks and old mice aged 24--26 weeks were inoculated with standard, single, oral doses of two strains of human pathogenic 'related' campylobacters and in vitro small intestinal solute absorption and fluid transfer measured 7 days after inoculation. Young inoculated mice showed significantly lowered D-glucose and D-galactose absorption; in old inoculated mice absorption of these solutes remained unaltered. In young inoculated mice absorption of D-glucose was uniformly depressed in the distal four-fifths of the small intestine; absorption in the proximal one-fifth remained u…

Campylobacter enteritis: a "new" disease.

By selective culture campylobacters (C jejuni and C coli) were isolated from the faeces of 57 (7-1%) out of 803 unselected patients with diarrhoea; none were isolated from 194 people who had not got diarrhoea. Specific agglutinins were found in the sera of 31 out of 38 patients with campylobacter enteritis and 10 of them had a rising titre. Half the patients were aged 15 to 44 years, but the incidence was highest in young children. All the patients with campylobacters had a distinctive clinical illness with severe abdominal pain. Campylobacters are a relatively unrecognised cause of acute ente…

Bovine and Pig Carcasses as a Source of Campylobacter in Poland: A Reservoir for Antimicrobial-Resistant Campylobacter coli.

Campylobacter is one of the most common causes of foodborne bacterial infections worldwide. Why poultry has been shown to be one of the most significant sources of these bacteria, ruminants, especially cattle, are also responsible for a high number of human Campylobacter jejuni, and to a lesser extent Campylobacter coli, infections. In this study, bovine and pig carcasses in Poland were investigated for the presence of Campylobacter and for their antimicrobial resistance. A total of 204 swabs from bovine carcasses and 355 swab samples from pig carcasses were tested during 2014-2018. Campylobac…

Comparison of basal broth media for the optimal laboratory recovery of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter species are the most common known bacterial cause of acute diarrhoeal disease and incidences are increasing yearly in Ireland. Concern is expressed that this increase may be due to poor laboratory techniques in recognising these organisms as they are fastidious and technically demanding to culture. AIMS: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of seven commercially available basal broth media for the laboratory cultivation of thermophilic C. jejuni and C. coli isolated from foods and clinical specimens, as well as for optimal laboratory passage. METHODS: Four strains o…

Effects of DNA extraction methods on the real time PCR quantification of Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, and Campylobacter lari in chicken feces and ceca contents.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was coupled with a DNA extraction to enumerate Campylobacter spp. from poultry gastrointestinal tract samples. Three experiments were conducted that included: 1) Development of a DNA standard curve related to bacterial DNA primers; 2) Design of a cell/genomic DNA extraction protocol to isolate Campylobacter spp. DNA from complex samples such as poultry feces; and 3) Comparison of PCR quantification to standard plate count methodology. The standard curve using primers for Campylobacter spp. was created for DNA extracted from environmental isolates with a l…

Antimicrobial Resistance in Campylobacter spp.

Campylobacter is a major foodborne pathogen and has become increasingly resistant to clinically important antimicrobials. To cope with the selection pressure from antimicrobial use in both veterinary and human medicine, Campylobacter has developed multiple mechanisms for antibiotic resistance, including modification or mutation of antimicrobial targets, modification or inactivation of antibiotics, and reduced drug accumulation by drug efflux pumps. Some of these mechanisms confer resistance to a specific class of antimicrobials, while others give rise to multidrug resistance. Notably, new anti…

Campylobacter: from microbiology to prevention.

In last years, Campylobacter spp has become one of the most important foodborne pathogens even in high-income countries. Particularly, in Europe, Campylobacteriosis is, since 2005, the foodborne disease most frequently notified and the second in USA, preceded by the infection due to Salmonella spp. Campylobacter spp is a commensal microorganism of the gastrointestinal tract of many wild animals (birds such as ducks and gulls), farm animals (cattle and pigs) and companion animals (such as dogs and cats) and it is responsible for zoonoses. The transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route through…

Antimicrobial resistance mechanisms among Campylobacter.

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are recognized as the most common causative agents of bacterial gastroenteritis in the world. Humans most often become infected by ingesting contaminated food, especially undercooked chicken, but also other sources of bacteria have been described. Campylobacteriosis is normally a self-limiting disease. Antimicrobial treatment is needed only in patients with more severe disease and in those who are immunologically compromised. The most common antimicrobial agents used in the treatment of Campylobacter infections are macrolides, such as erythromycin, a…

Campylobacter showae bacteremia with cholangitis.

We report a case of Campylobacter showae bacteremia associated with cholangitis. A 71-year-old man with advanced bile duct cancer was admitted to our hospital because of cholangitis with shock, hypoglycemia, and impaired renal function. After replacement of the biliary drainage tube, pus was drained from the tube. Specimens for blood and bile cultures were obtained, and fluid resuscitation and antimicrobial treatment were then begun. Although anaerobic blood culture yielded small curved gram-negative rods, the isolate could not be identified by conventional identification methods. The isolate …
