Direct (non-vector) transmission of West Nile virus in geese.

During a recent epizootic, losses due to West Nile virus (WNV) infection in young goose flocks were estimated to be far greater than expecte … uggests that horizontal transmission of WNV can occur in commercial flocks and may be aggravated if cannibalism and feather-picking of sick geese occur.

The role of human genetics in society: implications for legal involvement.

The tools and techniques of human genetics are very much part of medicine in the 1990s and beyond. Man's motivation for self improvement has been an integral part of his make-up since time immemorial. The human desire for preserving the fittest and weeding out the worst remains the same since stone-age man practised castration, coitus interruptus, mechanical contraception, urethral surgery, abortion, infanticide, infant cannibalism, delayed lactation and geronticide. During the intervening centuries there have been scores of attempts to develop dream states; at forced mass migration, or to pro…

Within-host dynamics of Trichinella spiralis predict persistent parasite transmission in rat populations.

Trichinella spiralis is transmitted and maintained in both a domestic and sylvatic cycle, whereby rats contribute to the spread of T. spiralis from domestic to sylvatic animals and vice versa. As a model for T. spiralis transmission in wildlife, we studied the potential of rats to act as a reservoir species for T. spiralis, by assessing experimentally its within-host infection dynamics, and simulating the between-host dynamics by a Monte Carlo approach. The distribution of parasite burden in individual rats is mathematically defined by roots of the dose response equation intersecting with the

Health of laying hens in an aviary system over five batches of birds.

Mortality and health were studied in laying hens kept in an aviary system on a practical scale. All management inputs were done by universit … gher (15.6% and 20.9%, respectively). The dominating causes of total mortality were salpingitis and cannibalism. Coccidiosis and lymphoid leucosis contributed significantly to mortality in Trial 2. An infestation with fowl mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) occurred in Trial 1. Feather loss was most severe in LB. Keel bone deviations were recorded at increasing lev …

The parasitic ecology of the rodent mite, Myobia musculi. III. Lesions in certain host strains.

Mice (C57BL/6N) from a commercial production colony with ulcerative skin lesions were shown to have low level infestations with Myobia musculi. Lesions were abolished by exposure to dichlorvos-impregnated plastic strips. Experimental reinfestation with M musculi resulted in prompt exacerbation of lesions in previously healed mice. Exacerbated lesions were again abolished by subsequent dichlorvos treatments. The histopathology of such lesions was shown to be similar to those in cats allergic to Otodectes cynotis; and a morphologic basis for an allergic interpretation of the myobic lesions in th

Kuru: its ramifications after fifty years.

Kuru was the first human neurodegenerative disease in the group of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, prion diseases or, in the past, slow unconventional virus diseases. It was reported to Western medicine in 1957 by Gajdusek and Zigas. Kuru was spread by endocannibalism and because of this the ratio of affected women and children to men was excessive. The hallmark of kuru neuropathology is the amyloid plaque. We may speculate what would happen if kuru had not been discovered or did not exist. The infectious nature of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) would probably not have been suspect…

Susceptible and infectious states for both vector and host in a dynamic pathogen-vector-host system.

Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a resurgent insect pathogen of honeybees that is efficiently transmitted by vectors and through host social contact. Continual transmission of DWV between hosts and vectors is required to maintain the pathogen within the population, and this vector-host-pathogen system offers unique disease transmission dynamics for pathogen maintenance between vectors and a social host. In a series of experiments, we measured vector-vector, host-host and host-vector transmission routes and show how these maintain DWV in honeybee populations. We found co-infestations on shared host

Pheasant rearing: associated husbandry and disease problems.

Pheasants are semi-wild and difficult to handle, especially in large numbers. At least seven million birds are now reared annually during a relatively short season, frequently for shoots where the owners have little or no knowledge of animal husbandry. The nutritional requirements are not accurately known. Hatchability and hygiene problems result from dirty eggs, inadequate egg storage and poor egg handling. Husbandry deficiencies contribute to major losses which include failure of feed and water intake especially during the first few days of life, cannibalism and feather loss with subsequent …

Epidemiology of Trichinella in the Arctic and subarctic: A review.

The finding of Trichinella in the Arctic was foreseen because captive polar bears and arctic foxes had been found infected during the first … high, and the circulation is in non-domestic cycles with transmission by predation, scavenging and cannibalism. There are also sporadic reports on the synanthropic species Trichinella spiralis in arctic wild mammals with little known or assumed contact to potential synanthropic cycles. In this paper, we summarize the knowledge on epidemiology of Trichinella …

The nuclear chromatin was fine and granular, with irregular distribution and nuclear-membrane thickening. The case of Jeffrey Dahmer: sexual serial homicide from a neuropsychiatric developmental perspective.

Sexual serial homicidal behavior has received considerable attention during the last three decades. Substantial progress has been made in the development of methods aimed at identifying and apprehending individuals who exhibit these behaviors. In spite of these advances, the origins of sexual serial killing behavior remain for the most part unknown. In this article we propose a biopsychosocial psychiatric model for understanding the origins of sexual serial homicidal behavior from both neuropsychiatric and developmental perspectives, using the case of convicted serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer as

Non-Professional Phagocytosis Increases in Melanoma Cells and Tissues with Increasing E-Cadherin Expression.

Non-professional phagocytosis in cancer has been increasingly studied in recent decades. In malignant melanoma metastasis, cell-in-cell structures have been described as a sign of cell cannibalism. To date, only low rates of cell-in-cell structures have been described in patients with malignant melanoma. To investigate these findings further, we examined twelve primary melanoma cell lines in both adherent and suspended co-incubation for evidence of engulfment. In addition, 88 malignant melanoma biopsies and 16 healthy tissue samples were evaluated. E-cadherin levels were determined in the cell…

Outbreak of Type C Botulism in Commercial Layer Chickens.

This report describes an outbreak of type C botulism in two organic, free-range commercial layer farms in the Midwest. Hens affected were 64 … gene. Speculations on the source of the botulinum toxins include poor mortality removal leading to cannibalism of decomposing carcasses, as well as birds on the farm having access to putrid carcasses in the compost pile from a hole in their outdoor access fence.

Chapter 50: history of tropical neurology.

Tropical neurology began less than two centuries ago. Consumption of dietary toxins predominated at the beginning and gave birth to the geographic entity. The story moved from lathyrism through Jamaican neuropathy to cassava-induced epidemic neuropathy, which was contrasted with Konzo, also associated with cassava. Other tropical diseases enumerated with chronological details include: Chaga's diseases, kwashiorkor, Madras type of motor neuron disease, atlanto-axial dislocation, Burkitt's lymphoma and Kuru, associated with cannibalism among the Fore linguistic group in New Guinea. More recent d…
