This paper critically analyses events that surrounded the reconstruction of the Colombian archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina islands after Hurricane Iota struck in 2020. Discussing the historical-structural and conjunctural dimensions within which the archipelago's history, various hurricanes, and reconstructions must be set, this paper draws on two theoretical conversations from Latin American and Caribbean critical thought and the critical humanitarian field that understand humanitarian governance as an 'arena of dispute'. Through mainly archival research of different

Recent genomic analyses have highlighted the prevalence of speciation with gene flow in many taxa and have underscored the importance of accounting for these reticulate evolutionary processes when constructing species trees and generating parameter estimates. This is especially important for deepening our understanding of speciation in the sea where fast-moving ocean currents, expanses of deep water, and periodic episodes of sea level rise and fall act as soft and temporary allopatric barriers that facilitate both divergence and secondary contact. Under these conditions, gene flow is not expec

The study objective was to evaluate human faecal contamination impacts in the Yal-ku lagoon in the Mexican Caribbean and to estimate adenovirus infection and illness risks associated with recreational exposure during water activities. A total of 20 water samples (10 from each site × two sites) (50 L) were collected monthly over a period of 12 months from two selected sampling sites in the swimming area of the Yal-ku lagoon. The occurrence of faecal-associated viruses was explored, and human adenovirus (HAdV) and pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) concentrations were quantified. A quantitative mi

INTRODUCTION: Gait disorders and falls occur early in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP-RS) and Caribbean atypical parkinsonism (Caribbean AP). However, the link between these signs and brain lesions has never been explored in these patient populations. Here, we investigate and compare the imaging factors that relate to gait and balance disorders in Caribbean AP and PSP-RS patients.
METHODS: We assessed gait and balance using clinical scales and gait recordings in 16 Caribbean AP and 15 PSP-RS patients and 17 age-matched controls. We measured the grey and white matter brain volumes on 3 T b

BACKGROUND: The neurosurgical workforce in the Caribbean and surrounding countries is largely unknown due to the diversity in cultural, linguistic, political, financial disparities, and colonial history between the countries. About 45 neurosurgeons serve 16 million people in the Caribbean Community and Common Market, a trade alliance including most Caribbean nations. We aimed to understand the current scope of neurosurgical workforce in this region while highlighting any system challenges and potential solutions for upscaling the workforce.
METHODS: We surveyed neurosurgeons within Caribbean

Introduction: Heterogeneity of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been suggested in terms of epidemiology, phenotypes and genetics between geographic areas and populations. However, there is limited information in Latin America. We conducted a systematic review that aimed to describe the epidemiology, frequency of genetic mutations, clinical characteristics and survival of ALS patients in this region. Methods: We reviewed Medline, Scopus, Scielo and LILACS databases up to April 2020. The search terms "Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis" or "Motor Neuron Disease" were used in combination with t

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium leprae was considered the only causal agent of leprosy until Mycobacterium lepromatosis was identified' which it has been suggested has greater pathogenicity and is linked to diffuse lepromatous leprosy (DLL) and Lucio's phenomenon (LPh). Our objective is to identify Mycobacterium spp. in an endemic area of leprosy in Colombia.
METHODS: The study included cases with a diagnosis of leprosy by clinical and histopathological analysis. DNA extraction and two specific rounds of semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were performed in paraffin biopsies skin to identif

Dengue fever has become one of the most outstanding infectious diseases in the world. Besides, the incidence and prevalence of dengue are increasing in the endemic areas of the tropical and subtropical regions. Space and time disease mapping models are common instruments to explain the patterns of disease counts, where hierarchical Bayesian models constitute a suitable framework for their formulation. These random events reflect interactions between nearby geographic locations, as well as correlations between close temporary instants. Functional data analysis techniques can better describe the

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most common form of gender-based violence (GBV) experienced by women globally. In the Caribbean, IPV is especially pervasive. This scoping review systematically examined descriptive studies, surveys, secondary data analyses, and mixed-methods studies or interventions conducted between 2000-and 2022 that address IPV or GBV among English-speaking adult Caribbean populations within both the region and in diaspora communities. Studies among non-English-speaking adult Caribbean populations, involving children or referencing childhood sexual abuse, articles not

Climate change is no longer a hypothetical problem in the Caribbean but a new reality to which regional public health systems must adapt. One of its significant impacts is the increased transmission of infectious diseases, such as dengue fever, which is endemic in the region, and the presence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector responsible for transmitting the disease. (1) Methods: To assess the association between climatic factors and human dengue virus infections in the Caribbean, we conducted a systematic review of published studies on MEDLINE and Web of Science databases according to Pref

There is scarcity of information on the determinants of periodontitis in Latin America and Caribbean countries. We conducted a comprehensive review of studies examining the association of smoking and diabetes with periodontitis outcomes in this region. We searched for population-based, cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies from Latin America and the Caribbean region that reported on the association between smoking or diabetes and periodontitis. Databases were searched up to October 2023 by two reviewers. Subsequently, two authors independently conducted a rigorous data extraction proc…

(1) Background: This study was conducted in the small island developing state of Barbados, which has dubiously earned the title of "amputation capital of the world", to understand perspectives of persons living with diabetic foot ulceration. (2) Methods: An exploratory multi-lens approach was used (focus groups; dyads; and triads) to gather indigenous Afro-Caribbean perspectives of living with diabetic foot ulceration that may be obscured by using a single method. (3) Results: Findings in this group highlighted the necessity of creating culturally sensitive education tools, as well as understa

BackgroundCooperation in public health and in oncology in particular, is currently a major issue for the island of Martinique, given its geopolitical position in the Caribbean region. The region of Martinique shares certain public health problems with other countries of the Caribbean, notably in terms of diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with cancer. We present here a roadmap of cooperation priorities and activities in cancer surveillance and oncology in Martinique.Main bodyThe fight against cancer is a key public health priority that features high on the regional health policy…

Dual biodiversity and climate crises have exacerbated declines in global fisheries, resulting in food insecurity for communities that depend on subsistence fishing. As fish populations change and shift their geographic distributions under a changing environment, long-term planning of fisheries management becomes critical for ensuring food security. Here, we first present physiologically informed species distribution models (pSDM) of seven finfish species in the Caribbean that are important for subsistence in some coastal areas. These models identified areas at risk of climate-driven declines a

Species of mosquitoes in the genus Haemagogus, native to the forests of the Caribbean, and South and Central America, are extraordinarily understudied despite their known role as sylvatic vectors of yellow fever and Mayaro viruses. Haemagogus janthinomys is the best studied species in the genus but represents only one of two subgenera. Genomic data for this genus is also limited to full mitochondrial genomes for six taxa, severely curtailing insight into the biogeography and evolutionary systematics of this genus. This work presents 9 new complete mitochondrial genome sequences of a putative n

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have not been extensively studied in Caribbean estuaries, particularly in Puerto Rico. Polar organic chemical integrative samplers were deployed in surface waters at five sampling sites in the San Juan Bay Estuary to investigate the occurrence and distribution of 137 CECs, resulting in the detection of 64 chemicals (51 pharmaceuticals and personal care products "PPCPs", 12 hormones plus sucralose) at least in one sampling site, and with 35 chemicals obtaining a 100 % detection frequency. Wastewater intrusion was implicated in the presence of CECs based o
