This report describes an intermediate state between the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) healthy carrier and adult T-cell Leukemia (ATL) who developed acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML, FAB subtype M2). The polyclonal integration of HTLV-I proviral DNA was demonstrated in the peripheral blood lymphoid cells, whereas AML cells had no HTLV-I proviral DNA. Three cohorts of Danish male military recruits (n = 1069) were studied for pharyngeal meningococcal carriage during 3 months at different seasons: 39-47% of entrants were meningococcal carriers and the carriage rate remained constant over time and season. Three cases of acrodermatitis enteropathica (a.e.) from two nonrelated families are described. Two siblings had characteristic symptoms of a.e. in childhood. PURPOSE: We sought to determine the presence of the parasite cryptosporidium in the duodenal aspirates of patients undergoing routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study consisted of 169 patients undergoing upper endoscopy or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
