Meningeal carcinomatosis in two cats.

Multifocal to diffuse meningeal infiltration by neoplastic epithelial cells was observed in two aged cats with neurological signs and a history of surgical ablation of the auricular pinnae because of the presence of squamous cell carcinoma. In both cats, examination of the external ear canals revealed neoplastic lesions consistent with squamous cell carcinoma, but no changes of the tympanic bullae were noted. In one cat, post-mortem examination revealed marked thickening of the dura mater and infiltration of the arachnoid layer by cytokeratin-positive, neoplastic epithelial cells. In the other

Disseminated melioidosis in two cats.

Melioidosis was diagnosed in two cats at necropsy. The first cat presented with jaundice and anaemia but died of overwhelming sepsis soon after admission, despite blood transfusion and other supportive measures. The second cat died several days after developing neurological signs; an infected digital wound may have been the primary focus of infection in this patient. The cats had presumably acquired the infection in Malaysia and northern Australia, respectively, and in both cases disease may have represented reactivation of a latent infection brought on by the stress of relocation. The epidemi

Primary glaucoma in Burmese cats.

OBJECTIVE: To document the clinical signs and management of primary glaucoma in Burmese cats. DESIGN: A retrospective study of six affected Burmese cats, from 1996 to 2001. Procedure Six Burmese cats diagnosed with primary glaucoma were managed over periods varying from 3 months to 4.5 years. Clinical details were obtained from practice records. Gonioscopic examination of the drainage or iridocorneal angle in eyes of these affected cats was made. RESULTS: Six desexed female Burmese cats (ages 7.0 to 10.5 years) presented with complaints of either unilateral (n = 4) or bilateral (n = 2) red e

Multiple epulides in 13 cats.

Epulides account for 0-7.8% of tumors in surveys of feline oral neoplasms. A review of the literature revealed no reports of multiple epulides in cats. Multiple, concurrent epulides were diagnosed microscopically in 13 cats. Fibromatous and ossifying epulides were diagnosed in 11 of 13 cats and fibromatous epulides were diagnosed in 2 of 13 cats. Microscopically, these epulides were nonencapsulated, well-vascularized, infiltrative, highly cellular neoplasms that expanded the gingiva and were composed of haphazardly arranged, spindle-shaped to stellate cells amid a dense, collagenous stroma. Os

Osteochondrodysplasia in Scottish Fold cats.

OBJECTIVE: To better characterise the bone and joint problems which can develop in Scottish Fold cats. DESIGN: Retrospective study of cases seen in five veterinary clinics and radiographic survey of cats in a cattery. RESULTS: Six Scottish Fold cats (four castrated males, two spayed females) aged between 5 months and 6 years were presented for signs of skeletal disease including lameness, reluctance to jump, a stiff stilted gait, short misshapen distal limbs, swelling of plantar tarsometatarsal regions and short thick inflexible tails. A further four cases (one male, three females, 15 months

Preparturient hypocalcemia in four cats.

Preparturient hypocalcemia was identified in 4 cats in a specific pathogen-free colony between 1995 and 1996. All cats had an acute onset of clinical signs, 3 to 17 days prior to parturition. Signs of depression, weakness, tachypnea, and mild muscle tremors were the most common clinical signs, following by vomiting and anorexia. Additional abnormalities included hypothermia, third eyelid prolapse, dehydration, pallor, lethargy, flaccid paralysis, and hyperexcitability. Hematologic abnormalities included leukocytosis with neutrophilia and lymphopenia. Hypocalcemia was documented in each queen.

Vegetative endocarditis in six cats.

Between 1990 and 1997 vegetative endocarditis was diagnosed in six neutered cats (three males, three females) aged between 3 and 9 years. Two cats were purebred (one Persian and one Tonkinese), the remaining four being domestic short haired cats. The diagnosis was made using echocardiography (five cases) or at necropsy (one case). Concurrent involvement of the aortic and mitral valve was noted in four cats, the aortic valve alone was affected in one case, and the tricuspid valve in another. A likely microbiological diagnosis was obtained in three cats: a Bartonella species in two cats based on

Pheochromocytoma in dogs and cats.

Pheochromocytomas are endocrine tumors arising from chromaffin cells (pheochromocytes) of the adrenal glands in dogs and cats. The clinical symptomatology produced results from the direct presence and space-occupying nature of the tumor, or the secondary presence of excessive amounts of excreted catecholamines. Diagnosis and management of pheochromocytomas remain great challenges for veterinary clinicians. The diagnosis is based on the results of supporting routine lab evaluation, blood-pressure determinations, selected biochemical and pharmacologic tests, and a number of imaging techniques. S

Deep mycotic infections in cats.

A review of deep mycotic infections assessed incidence, signalment, clinical presentation, and outcome in 571 feline cases. Pertinent findings included a predisposition in young, male cats for Sporothrix schenckii and Blastomyces dermatitidis. There was an increased incidence of feline leukemia virus infection in cases with histoplasmosis and of feline panleukopenia virus infection in cases with either aspergillosis or mucoralosis. Few other predisposing conditions were identified. Cryptococcosis, coccidioidomycosis, and sporotrichosis had better prognoses for recovery. Blastomycosis, histopla

Pharmacokinetics of thiamylal in cats.

Pharmacokinetics of thiamylal were determined after 13.2 mg of thiamylal/kg of body weight was administered IV to 6 healthy cats. Blood samples were obtained for 12 hours. Disposition of thiamylal best conformed to 2 multicompartmental models, a 2-compartment (n = 1) and a 3-compartment (n = 5) open pharmacokinetic model. The pharmacokinetic values were calculated for the overall best-fitted model, a mixed 2- and 3-compartmental model. The first or rapid distribution half-life was 1.91 minutes and a second, or slower, distribution half-life was 26.51 minutes. The elimination half-life was 14.3

High-rise syndrome in cats.

High-rise syndrome was diagnosed in 132 cats over a 5-month period. The mean age of the cats was 2.7 years. Ninety percent of the cats had some form of thoracic trauma. Of these, 68% had pulmonary contusions and 63% had pneumothorax. Abnormal respiratory patterns were evident clinically in 55%. Other common clinical findings included facial trauma (57%), limb fractures (39%), shock (24%), traumatic luxations (18%), hard palate fractures (17%), hypothermia (17%), and dental fractures (17%). Emergency (life-sustaining) treatment, primarily because of thoracic trauma and shock, was required in 37

Hairless cats in Great Britain.

Ten hairless kittens are known to have been born in Britain since 1978. Pedigree study supports the hypothesis of a monogenic, recessive mode of inheritance proposed in previous reports. A review of the literature suggests the possibility of at least two mutations giving rise to hairless cats, one of which has normal whiskers and the other attenuated whiskers. For these, the gene symbols hi, and hr, respectively, have been proposed.

Immune-mediated disorders of cats.

Immune-mediated disorders in cats share many clinical and pathologic similarities with their counterparts in other species. Cats, however, are unique among domestic animals owing to the involvement of feline leukemia virus. In addition, a number of other infectious organisms can produce immune-mediated sequelae--that is, FIP virus, FeSFV, and H. felis. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic aims in the management of feline immune-mediated disorders must take into account the probability of a primary or underlying disease process.

Spatial vision in strabismic cats.

Contrast thresholds for detection of stationary and flickering gratings were measured behaviorally for each eye of cats raised with induced convergent strabismus. The performance of the deviating eye was inferior to that of the nondeviating eye when test patterns were stationary. Flicker served to reduce the performance difference between the eyes in two cats but not in a third. These results suggest that strabismus amblyopia may not result from deficits within a single class of neurons. In all strabismic cats the contrast sensitivity of the nondeviating eye was significantly reduced relative

Intraocular lens implantation in cats.

An intraocular lens without loops was inserted in a cat eye using a suture through the iris and holes in the superior lens haptic for fixation. Excellent results were obtained in 37 of 54 implanted intraocular lenses. Among the 17 with complications, 5 eyes were lost because of death. One case of probable endophthalmitis and one of wound rupture occurred. The remaining ten problems were related to contact between intraocular lens and cornea. The mean cell loss in 21 eyes with intraocular lenses and no postsurgical corneal touch was 24%. In ten control eyes (wound only, no lens insertion) the m

Eye movement in strabismic cats.

Strabismus is a common clinical condition in which the visual axes of the eyes do not intersect on the object being viewed. As such, the ability to achieve single binocular vision by fusing the images of a single object in the two eyes is lost. In most cases of strabismus, one of the two eyes is clearly deviated and the other eye is used for fixation, although in some cases each eye is used alternately for fixation. While much attention has been devoted to the motor capabilities of the deviating eye in strabismus, little attention has been given to the visuomotor competence of the other eye. W
