Ten out of 47 calves that were born in a small Brahman herd from southern Brazil developed progressive muscular weakness and tremors, lethargy and poor body condition. Necropsy was performed on three affected animals. The only gross lesion detected was paleness of the muscles of the trunk and limbs. Multiple cytoplasm vacuoles located in different tissues were the principal microscopic lesions. Vacuoles were particularly evident in skeletal muscles and myocardium. PAS-positive granules were numerous in skeletal muscle fibres and Purkinje fibres of the myocardium, but were also observed in the

Surgical disorders of the gastrointestinal tract of cattle occur occasionally, and veterinarians are challenged to determine an accurate diagnosis and treatment for these conditions. Although surgical diseases most commonly occur in the forestomachs (dislocated abomasum, reticuloperitonitis) and the colons (cecal dilation), this article focuses n lesions in the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum).

Uterine health is often compromised in cattle because postpartum contamination of the uterine lumen by bacteria is ubiquitous, and pathogenic bacteria frequently persist causing clinical disease. The subfertility associated with uterine infection involves perturbation of the hypothalamus, pituitary and ovary, in addition to the direct effects on the uterus, and appears to persist even after clinical resolution of the disease. Absorption of bacterial components from the uterus can prevent the follicular phase LH surge and ovulation. In addition, the first postpartum dominant follicle has a slow…

Salt poisoning has been described under various circumstances in adult cattle. Presenting clinical signs in 6 Holstein beef cattle with such poisoning were primarily dysfunction of the central nervous system and included ataxia, opisthotonus, nystagmus, depression, muscle twitching and intermittent convulsions, as well as abdominal pain and polydipsia. Diarrhea occurred in 2, and blindness in 3/6 cattle. Hypernatremia (161.8 - 178.8 mmol/L) and hyperosmolality (331.81 - 366.18 mOsm/L) were present in all animals. To treat the affected cattle, access to fresh water was restricted, vascular volu…

Fluid therapy is practical and beneficial when properly administered to cattle. Mature cattle are more frequently alkalotic than acidotic, so nonalkalizing solutions are usually indicated. Exceptions include cattle with choke, carbohydrate engorgement, diabetes mellitus, and occasionally, renal disease, diarrhea, and fatty liver/ketosis. Many dehydrated cattle need supplemental potassium and calcium as well as sodium, chloride, and water. Intravenous administration is indicated in patients with obstructive gastrointestinal disease and those with severe dehydration. Oral or intraruminal adminis…

Twenty-five syndactylous Angus cattle, characterized pathologically, were reported from 16 herds in 10 states from 1979 to 1994. Twenty-one (84%) had all 4 legs syndactylous, 3 (12%) had 3 legs syndactylous, and 1 (4%) had 2 legs syndactylous. All syndactylous cattle walked with considerable difficulty. Hooves of aged animals became curled and bent laterally or medially. Affected hooves had the appearance of a truncated cone, the base of which was located at the coronary band. Most hooves were fused completely with no indication of dual anlage. An occasional hoof had a distal notch, and other …

Three Boran (Bos indicus) cattle infected with T. congolense IL 1180, and two uninfected control Boran cattle were used to study the effect of trypanosomiasis on the function of the thyroid gland. On a weekly basis, plasma thyroxine (T4) was measured by 125I-radioimmunoassay. Results indicated that T. congolense caused a significant decline in plasma T4 concentration in infected animals.

Congenital lymphedema is described in Hereford cattle. The disease was characterized by edema of the hind limbs, sometimes forelimbs, tail, and prepuce. Lymphatic system lesions were hypoplasia and aplasia of lymph vessels and prescapular, iliofemoral, and popliteal lymph nodes. Test matings demonstrated the transmission of the disease by an autosomal dominant trait with variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance.

Dimethoate, an organophosphorus insecticide, was the suspected cause of toxicosis in a group of young cattle grazing on pasture that had been sprayed 6 weeks before the onset of clinical signs. Affected animals had primarily nicotinic signs, such as muscle twitching, stiffness, weakness and paralysis, though muscarinic signs, such as diarrhea, salivation and pollakiuria, were also observed. Whole blood acetylcholinesterase activity was depressed in 3 animals. The atypical clinical syndrome and poor response to treatment with atropine and other anticholinergics may have been due to coexistent h…

Insects such as stable flies, house flies, horn flies, face flies, mosquitoes, horse flies, deer flies, cattle grubs, and lice as well as ticks and mites are the major external parasites of dairy animals in the United States. These pests cause obvious discomfort to livestock and economic effects of heavy populations usually are discerned easily. However, research efforts to date have failed to establish reproducible losses caused by specific ectoparasites. Research efforts involving a multidisciplinary systems approach are necessary to provide the data needed to develop total dairy management …

Mortalities and a poor growth syndrome in cattle in the Hunter River valley of New South Wales were associated with pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicity caused by Senecio lautus (common fireweed). A clinical problem of poor growth rate on a large property, where S. lautus was very common, was associated with consistent evidence of some degree of hepatic pyrrolizidine alkaloid lesions in young growing cattle and cows. S lautus subsp maritimus from this property caused the death of 2 experimentally fed calves within 77 days and depressed growth rate in a third calf. Pyrrolizidine alkaloidosis was evi…

Generalised glycogenosis was diagnosed in Brahman cattle on 4 Queensland properties on the basis of clinical observations and pathological and biochemical findings. The disease presented as a problem of ill-thrift and poor growth rate in calves which eventually showed nervous signs. Histologically there was vacuolation in the cells of the central nervous system, heart and muscular tissues. Biochemical assay of liver and blood mononuclear cells demonstrated a deficiency of alpha-glucosidase. Parents of affected calves had approximately half the alpha-glucosidase activity of that found in normal…

A brief definition and classification of the organisms is followed by a history of their isolation and general role in disease. Diseases associated with various types of mycoplasma are discussed under respiratory tract, mastitis, arthritis and keratoconjunctivitis. Descriptions include methods of infection, clinical signs, lesions and prognosis.
