Relationship Between Excessive Daytime Sleepiness and Caudate Nucleus Volume in Patients with Subjective Cognitive Decline: A Study from the SILCODE Using the Volbrain.

BACKGROUND: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and caudate nucleus volume alterations have been linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their relationship remains unclear under the context of subjective cognitive decline (SCD). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between EDS and caudate nucleus volume in patients with SCD. METHODS: The volume of entire brain was measured in 170 patients with SCD, including 37 patients with EDS and 133 non-EDS, from the Sino Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Decline (SILCODE). Participants underwent a comprehensive assessment battery, in…

Levo-tetrahydropalmatine attenuates the development and expression of methamphetamine-induced locomotor sensitization and the accompanying activation of ERK in the nucleus accumbens and caudate putamen in mice.

Levo-tetrahydropalmatine (l-THP) is an alkaloid purified from corydalis and has been used in many traditional Chinese herbal preparations for its analgesic, sedative, and hypnotic properties. Previous studies indicated that l-THP has modest antagonist activity against dopamine receptors and thus it might have potential therapeutic effects on drug addiction. However, whether and how l-THP contributes to methamphetamine (METH)-induced locomotor sensitization remains unclear. Therefore, the current study aims to examine the roles of l-THP in the development and expression of METH-induced locomoto

Efferent synaptic connections of dopaminergic neurons grafted into the caudate nucleus of experimentally induced parkinsonian monkeys are different from those of control animals.

This study investigated the question of whether grafted dopamine cells in the striatum of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated monkeys form synapses and, if they do, whether their postsynaptic targets were the same as those in control monkeys or in previous studies in rats. Electron-microscopic single immunostaining was performed for tyrosine hydroxylase on vibratome sections prepared from the head of the caudate nucleus of controls and MPTP-treated African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) that received a graft. Furthermore, correlated light- and electron-m…

Functional connectivity between the caudate nucleus and the frontal lobe and its association with executive functions in children and adolescents: a resting state fMRI study.

During childhood and adolescence, the human brain becomes structurally and functionally mature, affecting the development of various executive functions (EFs). The frontal lobe plays a significant role in managing a wide range of EFs from the understanding of the neurocognitive development of executive functioning. Along with the frontal lobe, the caudate nucleus (CN) is suggested to contribute to EFs. The frontal-subcortical circuit, which is a natural pathway connecting the basal ganglia to the frontal lobe, is suggested as a strongly associated circuit with EFs. Although significant functio…

[Torsion dystonia of the left upper limb probably due to a head injury. Calcification of the head of the right caudate nucleus discovered by tomodensitometric examination].

A young man (30 years) suffered a head injury in the course of a road accident. Four years after the accident, there was progressive development of hypertonia of the muscles of the left shoulder in association with certain movements, with torsion dystonia of the left upper limb. The presence of minimal neurological signs differentiated this cases from so-called idiopathic torsion dystonia. Tomodensitometry revealed an opacity of the head of the right caudate nucleus which was invisible on standard skull films. The authors discuss the physiopathology problems raised by this special case.

Fibromyalgia patients had normal distraction related pain inhibition but cognitive impairment reflected in caudate nucleus and hippocampus during the Stroop Color Word Test.

The mechanisms causing cognitive problems in chronic pain patients are not well understood. We used the Stroop color word task (SCWT) to inv … more pronounced during the incongruent condition. This was reflected in a reduced activation of the caudate nucleus, lingual gyrus, temporal areas, and the hippocampus in FM patients compared to HC. In conclusion, we found normal pain inhibition during SWTC in FM patients. The cognitive difficulties seen in FM patients, reflected in longer RTs, were related to re …

Muscarinic receptors in porcine caudate nucleus. I. Enhancement by nickel and other cations of [3H]cis-methyldioxolane binding to guanyl nucleotide-sensitive sites.

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the synaptic membrane fraction of porcine caudate nucleus were characterized by using a radiolabeled agonist, [3H]cis-methyldioxolane [( 3H]CD) and an antagonist, [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate [( 3H]QNB). Scatchard analysis of the specific binding of [3H]CD gave a single equilibrium dissociation constant of 8.1 nM when a concentration of less than 80 nM [3H]CD was used. The binding capacity was 390 fmoles/mg of protein and corresponded to about 10% of the binding sites of [3H]QNB. Agonist/[3H]CD competition binding experiments indicated that [3H]CD was selec…

Individuals with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) are at enhanced risk of developing an alcohol or other substance use disorder relative … icipants showed significantly more activation in the left dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and left caudate nucleus. These findings correspond to models of risk in FH+ persons that postulate biases in brain decision-making systems as underlying elevated risk for alcoholism.

Muscarinic receptors in porcine caudate nucleus. II. Different effects of N-ethylmaleimide on [3H]cis-methyldioxolane binding to heat-labile (guanyl nucleotide-sensitive) sites and heat-stable (guanyl nucleotide-insensitive) sites.

Heat treatment of membranes from porcine caudate nucleus (50 degrees for 7 min) caused a marked decrease in [3H]cis-methyldioxolane [( 3H]CD) binding without affecting seriously the binding of [3H]3-quinuclidinyl benzilate [( 3H]QNB). Approximately 20% of the [3H]CD binding at 5 nM [3H]CD remained after the heat treatment. The remaining binding was not affected by 0.1 mM guanylyl-5'-imidodiphosphate (GppNHp) or by nickel or other cations at concentrations below 10 mM. Treatment of the membranes with trypsin (30 micrograms/mg of protein) at 20 degrees for 20 min also caused a marked decrease in…

Old disease, new targets. Part-II, haematological malignancies.

In order to understand the physiological role of the caudate nucleus, we combine here our laboratory data on cats with reports of patients with selective damage to this nucleus. Cats with bilateral removal of the caudate nuclei showed a stereotyped behavior consisting of persistently approaching and then following a person, another cat, or any object, and attempting to contact the target. Simultaneously, the animals exhibited a friendly disposition and persistent docility together with purring and forelimbs treading/kneading. The magnitude and duration of this behavior was proportional to the …
