А case of a mucocele of the appendix - A diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mucocele of the appendix is a rare pathology with an estimated incidence of less than 1 % of all appendectomies. Here is a report of a 67-year-old Bulgarian female, diagnosed with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) after immunohistochemical analysis, which changed the therapeutic strategy. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a patient, initially admitted to the Gastroenterology Department due to complaints of dyspepsia and intermittent watery diarrhea. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an oval hypoechoic heterogeneous formation with mixed echo struct

Giant appendiceal mucocele (17 cm) treated by laparoscopic appendectomy: a rare presentation and review of the literature.

Appendiceal mucocele is an uncommon clinical entity, usually detected incidentally and rarely exceeding 10 cm in length. We present a unique case of a giant 17-cm appendiceal mucocele successfully managed with laparoscopic appendectomy. A 51-year-old woman presented with abdominal bloating, and colonoscopy revealed a large submucosal lesion at the cecal base. Computed tomography demonstrated a 17-cm cystic lesion consistent with appendiceal mucocele. The patient underwent laparoscopic appendectomy without complications, and histopathological analysis confirmed low-grade appendiceal mucinous ne

Sidedness is not a prognostic factor in an unselected cohort of patients with colon cancer but prognosis for caecal carcinoma is worse - A multivariate analysis of a large single institution database.

PURPOSE: Sidedness has emerged as a prognostic factor for metastatic colorectal cancer treated with modern systemic therapies. This study investigates whether it is also relevant for an unselected patient cohort including all stages. METHODS: All consecutive patients admitted with colon cancer between 1995 and 2018 were retrieved from an institution-held database. Patients were divided into two cohorts. The first cohort included patients without distant metastases who were able to undergo curative resection. The second cohort presented with distant metastases (stage IV). Potentially prognosti

Rare secondary carcinoma from colon to testis. Review of literature and report of a new case.

A 65 year old man who underwent a right hemicolectomy for mucus secreting adenocarcinoma of the caecum in 1986 developed a secondary localisation in the right testis one year later. A review of the international literature shows only 14 previously described cases of spread of a colonic tumour into the testis. The Authors discuss the possible mechanisms of this form of dissemination.

Granular-cell myoblastoma of the cercum: report of a case.

A 9-mm granular-cell myoblastoma of the cecum found incidentally during appendectomy in a 17-year-old-girl is reported. Electronmicroscopic findings favor origin of the granular cells from an undifferentiated mesenchymal (fibroblast-like) cell. Review of the small number of previously reported cases revealed three involving the cecum, one each in the ascending and transverse colon and two in the rectum. Four patients were asymptomatic and their lesions were found incidentally. Three lesions simulated maligancy clinically; these patients underwent right hemicolectomy.

Bony metaplasia in a caecum adenocarcinoma.

Ectopic bone formation in the digestive tract is a very rare phenomenon in pathology. Most cases of bone metaplasia were found in distal colon tumors, rectum and sigmoid respectively. We present a case of well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the caecum (the second case of literature) associated with bone metaplasia, which debuted atypical, with symptoms of infectious enterocolitis, in a 72-year-old female patient, with no history of digestive pathology. Highlighting bone metaplasia was achieved by current histological techniques. Patient's evolution was favorable with surgical treatment and c

Dermoid cyst of the caecum.

Dermoid cysts of the caecum are rare and only four cases have been reported in the literature. They are sequestration cysts and are lined by squamous epithelium with skin appendages. Aetiologically these cysts may represent squamous metaplasia of enterogenous cysts or sequestration cysts due to epidermal inclusion at the time of closure of the neural groove.

A case of large intestinal malignant lymphoma.

Primary malignant lymphoma of gastrointestinal tract is relatively rare and the most of it are seen in stomach or small intestine, and in Japan only 130 cases of primary large intestinal malignant lymphoma were reported from the accumulating results of the postoperative cases in the 11th Congress of the Japanese Research Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum. This paper describes the case report of the primary malignant lymphoma originated from the cecum, and the review of the literature. The patient was 63 year-old female, who came to this hospital for slight fever and right lower abdomi

Primary epithelial neoplasms and other epithelial lesions of the appendix (excluding carcinoid tumors).

Epithelial tumors of the appendix range from low-grade mucosal-based tumors which, when confined to the appendix, have an excellent prognosis but, once outside the appendix, have a fair prognosis and often a prolonged disease course, to high grade invasive carcinomas that are rapidly fatal. Low grade mucinous neoplasms may rupture and spread to the peritoneum as pseudomyxoma peritonei, and the nomenclature of these tumors has been the subject of considerable disagreement among pathologists; the designation "low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm" has recently been proposed for reasons discuss
