[Chlamydia, herpes, chancre, gonorrhea, syphilis. Are you familiar with the therapy?].

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) which today are taken to cover all genital contact infections including the classical venereal diseases, have increased appreciably in recent years. With regard to the penis, STDs may manifest as papules, pustules and ulcers including urethral discharge and swelling of regional lymph nodes. Possible causes may be bacterial, viral or fungal. Depending on the pathogens involved, local or hematogeneous dissemination may occur. Treatment of infectious penile diseases follows the recommendations contained in the guidelines of the German Society for STD.

Primary syphilis without chancre - A case report of rare syphilitic balanitis of Follmann.

INTRODUCTION: Syphilitic balanitis of Follmann (SBF) is a rare condition of primary syphilis which is characterized by any kind of balanitis with or without chancre on the penis combined with the presence of swollen inguinal lymph nodes confirmed by the finding of Treponema pallidum in the lesions or by the positive serological syphilitic testing. Timely identification of the SBF is very important in properly treating the disease stopping the spread of syphilis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42year-old heterosexual male patient came to our clinic and complained of a painless, hard erythema nodule with…

Primary syphilitic chancre on the upper arm in an HIV-1-infected patient.

A 32-year-old HIV-infected man presented with an ulcerating skin lesion with indurated borders on the upper right arm. Both dark-field microscopy and syphilis serology confirmed the diagnosis of primary syphilis. Extragenital syphilitic chancres are uncommon but nevertheless have to be kept in mind as they often delay diagnosis.

[Reappearance of soft chancre: comments on the current epidemic in Paris (author's transl)].

A total of 678 cases of soft chancre were treated in one hospital between 1973 and 1979. The majority of the patients were males (97 p. cent), and most of them came originally from Maghreb or Black Africa. Contamination was from prostitution (61 p. cent) or chance acquaintances (29 p. cent). The genital ulceration was often clinically atypical, frequently syphiloid; pain was present in only 59 p. cent of cases, and adenopathy, noted in 63 p. cent of patients, had the appearance of an inflammatory bubo in only 23 p. cent. The present high frequency of soft chancres, and their misleading clinica…

Bilateral nongranulomatous anterior uveitis associated with chancre of the tongue: initial presentation of syphilis.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports the case of a pleomorphic manifestation of syphilis, a reemerging sexually transmitted disease. FINDINGS: A 51-year-old male presented with bilateral nongranulomatous anterior uveitis associated with an isolated syphilitic chancre of the tongue that was successfully treated with parenteral benzathine penicillin. CONCLUSION: Syphilis has the potential to lead to any type of intraocular inflammation. A careful review of the symptoms is useful for the detection of extraocular signs of syphilitic infection.
