A high prevalence of Toxoplasma in Australian chickens.

A small survey was undertaken of commercially reared free-range chickens in Western Australia using serology and molecular detection. Eighteen out of 20 serum samples showed antibody responses with titers of 1:64 in 5 chickens and ≥ 1:128 in 13 chickens. DNA extracted from 22 out of 50 tissue samples, 10 brains and 12 spleens, were positive by nested PCR, and sequencing at the B1 locus on DNA from 3 brain and 3 spleen samples confirmed that 2 isolates were Toxoplasma gondii, Type I, and 4 Type II/III. The high prevalence of Toxoplasma infection found in commercial, free-range chickens raises p…

Comparative metabolism of warfarin in rats and chickens.

Warfarin, a coumarin rodenticide, is commonly used worldwide for rodent control, and is often reported as the cause for poisoning accidents in nontarget animals, in particular bird species. However, the metabolism of warfarin in birds is still unclear. In a previous study, we found an unknown warfarin metabolite in chicken cytosolic fractions. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the cytosolic warfarin metabolites in chickens compared with those in rats. The cytosol fractions of both chicken and rat livers showed the metabolic activity of 2 diastereomers and 2 enantiomers of warfarin alco…

Emmetropization and eye growth in young aphakic chickens.

PURPOSE: To establish a chick model to investigate the trends of eye growth and emmetropization after early lensectomy for congenital cataract. METHODS: Four monocular treatments were applied: lens extraction (LX); sham surgery/-30 D lens; LX/+20 D lens; and LX/+30-D lens (nine per group). Lens powers were selected to slightly undercorrect or overcorrect the induced hyperopia in LX eyes and to induce comparable hyperopia in sham-surgery eyes. Refractive errors and axial ocular dimensions were measured over a 28-day period. External ocular dimensions were obtained when the eyes were enucleated

A histomorphologic study of scoliosis in pinealectomized chickens.

STUDY DESIGN: Pinealectomy was used to induce scoliosis in Broiler chickens, and a histologic investigation of the pinealectomized chickens was performed. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence of scoliosis in pinealectomized Broiler chickens and to determine histologic changes in vertebrae in the pinealectomized chickens before the occurrence of a secondary vertebral wedging deformity due to scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: White Leghorn chickens have previously been used as an experimental model of scoliosis, but the occurrence of scoliosis in these chickens following pinealectomy …

Nephropathogenic infectious bronchitis in Pennsylvania chickens 1997-2000.

Nephropathogenic infectious bronchitis (NIB) was diagnosed in 28 infectious bronchitis virus (IBV)-vaccinated commercial chicken flocks in Pennsylvania from December 1997 to July 2000. Early dinical signs were increased flock mortality and urinary water loss (polyuria and pollakiuria) leading to wet litter. Daily mortality ranged from 0.01% in layers to 2.45% in broilers, with total broiler mortality as high as 23%. Severe renal swelling and accumulation of urates in the tubules were commonly seen. Visceral gout and urolithiasis were less frequently observed. Histopathologic changes included c

Pathologic mechanism of experimental scoliosis in pinealectomized chickens.

STUDY DESIGN: This study was designed to investigate the pathologic mechanisms of idiopathic scoliosis using experimentally induced scoliosis in chickens. OBJECTIVE: To understand the process of producing a scoliotic deformity in pinealectomized chickens. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Pinealectomy in chickens consistently produces scoliosis with anatomic characteristics similar to those of human idiopathic scoliosis. Pinealectomized chickens are an important animal model for the study of idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: In this study, 40 chickens were divided into two groups; 20 chickens treate…

Adverse effects of dietary lupine in broiler chickens.

This study describes the adverse effects of dietary lupines in broiler chickens for which lupine seeds (Lupinus angustifolius) in raw, dehulled, or autoclaved forms were used as a replacement for soybean meal (SBM) in practical diets. Test diets contained 35% SBM (control) or raw (40%), autoclaved (40%), or dehulled (35%) lupine seed meal. All diets were isocaloric (3,230 kcal/kg AME) and isonitrogenous (23% crude protein). Each diet was offered ad libitum to a group of 16 (four replicates with four birds per replicate) day-old male broiler chicks for 21 d. Chemical analysis of lupine seeds sh…

Botulism in chickens associated with elevated iron levels.

Clostridium botulinum type C toxicosis was diagnosed by the mouse inoculation test in two outbreaks of botulism in commercial broiler and roaster chickens. One case involved 7-wk-old commercial roaster chickens, and the other involved 15-day-old commercial broiler chickens. A definitive point source for preformed C. botulinum exotoxin was not identified in either case investigation. Elevated iron concentrations in the drinking water and/or feed may have presented a significant risk factor that may have resulted in intestinal proliferation of C. botulinum and subsequent botulism.

The study of thiamine requirement in broiler chickens.

Thiamine status in response to a wide range (2 to 32 mg/kg) of dietary supplementation of thiamine was studied in male and female broiler chickens in order to understand the manifestation of marginal thiamine deficiency in chickens. Thiamine content and transketolase (TK) activity, were measured in tissues (brain, heart, liver) and blood samples from chickens at 1, 7, 14, 21, 35, and 42 days of age. There was no correlation between body weights and tissue thiamine or TK activity at 3 or 6 weeks of age. Overall thiamine supplementation did not have significant effects on TK activity in the live…

LHRH neuronal subtypes have multiple origins in chickens.

Previous studies indicate that LHRH neurons of the septal-preoptic area originate in the olfactory epithelium. In the current study, we found that LHRH neurons entering the telencephalon from the olfactory nerve were not continuous with LHRH neurons in the thalamus. In addition, ablation of the olfactory placode eliminated LHRH neurons in the telencephalon but did not eliminate LHRH neurons in the thalamus. We propose that there are at least two sites of LHRH neuron production, the olfactory epithelium and the diencephalon.

Aversiveness of motion and noise to broiler chickens.

1. The aversiveness of motion and noise to broiler chickens was examined using a passive avoidance technique. Birds were initially trained to peck a key a fixed number of times to obtain food. After training, food could still be obtained by key pecking, but feeding was immediately followed by 1 min exposure to noise or motion. Birds could delay or avoid exposure by delaying or avoiding key pecking, hence foregoing food. Reduced pecking rate was therefore taken as a measure of aversion. 2. In experiment 1, simultaneous motion and noise, but not noise alone, resulted in a significant decrease in…

An encephalitic form of listeriosis in broiler chickens.

A disease outbreak characterized by torticollis, incoordination, and depression was seen in a commercial broiler operation in California. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from brain tissue with some degree of difficulty, and only after culturing directly from the brain stem. No evidence of concurrent disease was found, and the source of the outbreak was undetermined.

Position of Meckel's diverticulum in broiler-type chickens.

In each of three trials broiler-type chickens were used to determine whether Meckel's diverticulum resides in a constant position along the intestinal tract. Chickens were provided a basal diet ad libitum through 49 (Trials 2 and 3) or 52 days of age (Trial 1). Body weight and total intestine length as well as the lengths of the intestine from the gizzard to Meckel's diverticulum (GMD) and from Meckel's diverticulum (MD) to the cecal openings (MDC) were then recorded. When intestine length was expressed as a percentage of body weight, significant differences were noted between sexes. However, …

Neural consequences of partial toe amputation in chickens.

The extent of the damage inflicted on the hallux was determined in a group of detoed, newly hatched, male broiler-breeder chicks obtained from a commercial hatchery. Healing and neural regeneration were very rapid and after 22 days the stump had a complete epidermal and dermal covering with the dermis being well supplied with both nerves and blood vessels. Some regenerating nerve bundles became trapped in scar tissue and formed small terminal neuromas which persisted over the 60-day observation period. These results are discussed in relation to partial beak amputation and their welfare implica

Host specificity of Cryptosporidium sp. isolated from chickens.

The host specificity of Cryptosporidium sp. infecting chickens was evaluated by oral inoculation of oocysts into 6 different species of neonatal rodents, adult nude mice (athymic), neonatal conventional and gnotobiotic pigs, turkeys, muscovy ducks and bobwhite quail. Examinations of tissue sections, ileal mucosal smears, fecal flotations and stained feces failed to reveal any infections in the mammalian species examined. Oocysts were observed in the feces, and developmental stages were observed in tissue sections, of turkeys and muscovy ducks but not bobwhite quail. This study indicates that C…

AT-1.1: a thymus-specific alloantigen of chickens.

A thymocyte-specific alloantigen, designated AT (avian thymus)-1.1, has been detected in Cornell C strain (CS) and Obese strain (OS) chickens, the latter being a strain derived from CS which develops a spontaneous form of autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT). Antisera specific for this antigen were developed first in a turkey immunized with thymocytes from an OS chicken and, later, in AT-1.1-negative CS chickens immunized with AT-1.1-positive thymocytes. AT-1.1 was detected in 50-70% of cells in a thymus cell suspension, but was not seen on peripheral blood lymphocytes, erythrocytes, or cells from bur…
